“...the entire Apalachicola National Forest” ~ Mulder

First of all, every summer, my mom, my aunts, and I go to St. George Island (which is in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Florida).  To get to the island, we have to drive through the Apalachicola National Forest.  It’s about a hour long stretch of road, but when you get to the end, all you are see are shrimpin’ shacks, but your in St. George and nothing can possibly go wrong!!!!!

Anyway, “Detour” is supposedly set in the Apalachicola National Forest.  In the episode, the forest is an extremely dense, damp forest that surveyors can’t wait to get their hands on.  In reality, the trees in the forest probably haven’t been densely covered with foliage since Ponce de Leon came through 450 years ago, and the forest, being a NATIONAL FOREST, is protected from encroaching development.

Besides these minor misgivings, Frank Spotnitz (stop laughing at him!) gives us a pretty well rounded attempt at a scary MotW that took a “Detour” into some unprecedented and priceless Mulder and Scully moments.  So the plot doesn’t hold together that well, and the mothmen are kinda (really) cheesy, and some of the things that Scully says about ‘fighting her cancer’ are really stupid, but it’s Spotnitz, for Christ’s sake.  We have to expect some level of dissatisfaction.
But I mainly like “Detour”.

By the way, if you’re ever in Apalachicola, theirs a really good restaurant called the Apalachicola Seafood Grill & Steakhouse.  Just don’t drink the water; Florida water is really nasty because of all the sulfur in it.

Also, check our Julia Mae's... dont' order catfish unless you really want it, because all they do is scale it and cut of the head, fry it and smack it on your plate, fins, tail and all. Good eatin'...
