"Dreamland Part 2" by Caroline O’Connell

From the opening monologue, to the closing double take, Dreamland 2 was
a vast improvement on the first part.  Unlike D1 which  tried too hard
to be funny and didn’t quite pull it off, D2 played to its strengths -
namely great perfomances from Duchovny, Anderson and McKean working
with a superior script to last week’s.  Their interraction just about
made up for the shortcomings of part 1.

Michael McKean’s "Once upon a time..." summed up Fox Mulder’s life as
it appers on paper.  For a first time viewer, it would look like Mulder
is a sad little man, with a sad little life and Maurice needs to do is
change the furniture, tow the line at work and life would be perfect. 
Maybe he’d even get the girl.

Once again, a fake Mulder tries to seduce Scully.  I know it’s been
done before, but it’s still funny!  Was it because he tried to seduce
her, that Scully was then convinced that a switch had taken place and
Mulder was now Maurice?  Sorry to all you lovely Shippers out there,
but it looks like any attempts by Mulder - real or otherwise - to
romance Scully looks likely to end in violence.

When Maurice proclaims later to Scully "you’ll miss me when I’m gone."
I found myself in agreement.  Spinal Tap is the greatest film ever
made... ever.  So, any chance to see Michael McKean on form is fine by
me!  His ability to annoy every single person he came into contact with
- especially poor old "Danes" - puts him head and shoulders above the
rest of the guest cast.  Thankfully we were spared much of the cliche
children from hell, and even Nora Dunn manage to invoke sympathy for
her character who’s marriage seemed to be crumbling around her.

The script by The Gilnitzes (name dropping themselves yet again - This
time as Saddam Hussein’s double.) was packed with some great one liners
but also managed some lovely little moments, particularly when Scully
reveals not only has she lost her job, but the odds against returning
Mulder safely back to his own body - however sad and pathetic Maurice
thinks it is -  were astronomical.  I wonder if they had given Mulder a
more pleasant family than the Fletchers, would he have been so
desperate to get back?

The whole thing was let down by the huge plot inconsistancies.  If
Mulder still has his nice new furniture and Scully has her fused coin,
how come they managed to "slip under Kersh’s radar"?  It would seem our
time warp suffers from selective memory loss.

Perhaps some judicious editing could have turned an average 2 parter
(saved only by the lead performances) into one classic episode.

Random Stuff.

So, Scully is "willful, subordinate and not a team player."  She’s
definitely been hanging out with Mulder too long.

And does she posess no casual clothes at all?  She arrives at Mulder’s
for dinner in the most severe suit I’ve ever seen!

BTW, did anyone notice that the mirror image of Scully and
Maurice/Mulder on the bed was the wrong way around?  He appeared at her
right hand side on both occasions.

Mulder: "I have a whole life I’m desperately trying to get back to." 
Why?  If we’ve learned anything from The X-Files it’s that Mulder has
no life!

Frohike as Sneezy?  I would have thought he’d be Gropey!
