the latest fad in new music: garage rock.
this style is raw, it's not too complicated and it leaves some people asking themselves, is this it? apparently it is. the strokes came out and made it big this year with their debut Is This It and the UK just ate it up. These New York City rich kids paved the way for bands like The Hives and The White Stripes to make it to heavy rotation on TV and radio. Check out some singles, listen to some albums and then ask yourself, is it really worth the fuss? |

Where: New York City. Who: Rich boys who look a mess.
The Strokes are kickin' it...old skool. They look retro, they sound retro and their videos are even retro. Their music: not too bad (but sometimes overrated). Their debut is a favourite among many, however, the true test is how their second release does. These guys are truly into the rock star life, which makes you wonder how long they can really last with all the sex, drugs and alcohol. Sometimes The Strokes bother me, sometimes they don't. Their 'way too cool' attitude can get on my nerves, but the music is alright, so I'll give them that much. |

Where: Sweden Who: A "cute" singer and some chubby backups.
The Hives are a boyband. Not like BSB or Nsync cos obviously they are not pumping out the cheese tracks, but they were put together in Sweden by some dude, and now they are ready to "take over the world."
Their sound is totally harsh, the lead singer is totally animated; apparently this makes for a good show. Although they haven't reached fame of Strokes proportions the Hives have created a stir that is not to go unnoticed. |

Watch Out For: Lead singer prancing around like Mick Jagger. Also notable: their 1997 record was titled 'Barely Legal' which also happens to be a track released by the Strokes 3 years later... Burn: their CD online now. |

Where: Detroit Rock CIty Who: Jack and Meg White, they're brother and sister, no wait, they're ex-husband and wife...no wait...
First catching the attention of the masses with their lego video for "Fell In Love With A Girl", The White Stripes have swept over the nation. Their sound is much like the others mentioned here, except instead of 4 or 5 guys, it's only the two of them. I suppose it's better that way since they actually have an excuse for sounding minimal. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the genre but these two really seem sincere about their music and are not out for the cash money; that is something i can respect. |
