When choosing to bring a dog into your life, the most important thing you can do is be honest with yourself. Research breed characteristics and find what is going to suit your lifestyle. Don't just choose a dog or puppy because they are cute or they need a home - if they don't fit in you are not doing yourself or the dog any favors.
Before giving in to a dog who is
pleading "Take me home" with his
eyes, please consider these points:
* Do you really want a dog?
* How much time do you have to
spend with a dog?
* Do you have children?
* Are there other animals in your
household?
* How much grooming do you want
to do?
Would you prefer a short-haired dog
or a long-haired dog?
Will you be able to get a dog
groomed who requires clipping?
* How much room will the dog have
for exercise?
Do you have a fenced yard?
Are you an active person?
Does the dog require a job to do,
such as herding?
* Will you be financially able to get
the needed vaccinations? Licensing?
Premium food? Toys? Collar/leash?
Yearly physicals? Obedience
training?
* What breed is best for you?
* Should you get an adult or puppy?
If you want a puppy, will you be able
to deal with, and properly correct,
puppy behavior such as digging,
chewing, housebreaking accidents,
etc.?
Are you aware that some breeds
take 2 years to fully mature?
If it is winter, are you going to be
dedicated to bundling up and taking
the puppy out several times a day to
go potty?
You can learn a lot about breeds by attending a dog show, checking out breed books and talking to people. Feel free to ask your veterinarian questions about different breeds and problems they have seen. If you don't have a veterinarian, this is a good time to find one who is willing to talk with you.
