There is not nearly as much written concerning choosing a cat as there is about choosing a dog. This could be because generally cats seem to be easier to care for and most people are not looking for a purebred.

If you are looking for a particular breed, there are several good breed books for cats. Ask about genetic and behavior problems when you are talking to breeders.

Whether you are looking for a purebred or a mixed breed cat, you should ask yourself these questions:

* Do you really want a cat?
* Is it going to be a companion only or is it to have a purpose such as catching mice?
* How much time do you have to spend with a cat?
* Do you want a cat or kitten?
* Will it live indoors or outdoors?
* Do you have young children?
* Do you have other animals?
* Are you going to be able to care of the financial responsibilities including vaccinations, annual exams, premium foods, toys and litter/litter boxes?
* Do you have furniture that you do not want claw marks in? Do you know how to eliminate this behavior?
* Do you want a long-hair or short-hair?
* Do you want a male or female?

Once you have answered these questions, you have a good idea what you need to fit into your lifestyle. Next, research cat breeds, even if you aren't planning to buy a pure-bred, and learn what breeds have characteristics that you are looking for.

Take time to talk to people who breed cats, see if there are cat shows in your area that you can watch and check with your local veterinarian to find out more about cats.
