Viewed from the Bahraini side on a dusty day, this is the 15 mile King Fahad Causeway from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain, a remakable piece of engineering, opened in 1986. The island (centre-left) is man-made and split into 2 sections to house the border formalities for the 2 countries. There is a viewing tower and restaurant on each side, which can be utilised without crossing the border to the other side.

Expats working in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia make regular trips over the causeway if they are lucky enough to be granted a multiple exit/entry visa by their sponsor. In Bahrain, one can enjoy the delights of bars, dancing girls and a much less restricted social life. Some expats live in Bahrain and do 'the bridge' every day to their work in Saudi Arabia.
