Karol Wojtyła

Ronald Reagan 19 June 1979 to Ed Langley

At any rate, my course is set, and while I am not making it public to the press, other than to say I will announce a decision in the fall, I know what that decision will be and I am going to go for it. If, as you say, a voice is needed, one thing must be said for that office : the voice from that podium is louder than that of anyone who just tries to raise his voice out there in the countryside. I share your feelings about what the Pope has done in the trip to Poland, but Ed, would his voice have been heard by so many, would he have inspired so many if he were not the Pope?

Ronald Reagan 9 July 1981 to John O. Koehler

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your giving me all the information that you gathered. It adds a great deal of knowledge of what is going on over there in the captive nations. I was particularly interested to read your comments about the resurgence of religion. I have had a feeling, particularly in view of the pope's visit to Poland, that religion might very well turn out to be the Soviets' Achilles' heel. I've had some reports that it is even going on in an underground way in Russia itself.

New York etc. : Free Press 2003, p. 229.

Ronald Reagan 25 June 1987 to Mr. Phil Regan, Pasadena California

Just a line to thank you and Jo for your kind letter, . . (etc). Our summit was a complete success but you'd never know it from the press accounts. Actually we got everything we went for and the relationship with our six allies has never been closer.

Let me assure you the pope is still Catholic and let me add, still a truly great human being. Our visit is something I'll long remember.

New York etc. : Free Press 2003, p. 735.

Ronald Reagan 25 June 1987 to Ruddy Lee-Hines, Washington, D.C.
Our trip to Italy was busy but at the same time interesting. As you know we were in Venice and it's unusual and exciting to be in a city where almost all the streets are canals and you travel by boat wherever you go. Yes the pope speaks English and a half dozen other languages for that matter. We had a good visit. He'll be visiting our country next year.

From Pope John Paul II Dies at 84, Victor L. Simpson 2 March 2005

VATICAN CITY - John Paul II, who led the Roman Catholic Church for 26 years and helped topple communism in Europe while becoming the most-traveled pope in history, died Saturday night in his Vatican apartment, ending a long public struggle against debilitating illness. He was 84.

"We all feel like orphans this evening," Undersecretary of State Archbishop Leonardo Sandri told the crowd of 70,000 that gathered in St. Peter's Square below the pope's still-lighted apartment windows.

The Vatican said the pope died at 9:37 p.m. (2:37 p.m. EST). . .

( . . )

In Washington, President Bush . . . said the pontiff "launched a democratic revolution that swept Eastern Europe and changed the course of history."
