Juliusz Słowacki

'The origin of species was taught in Poland before Darwin by Sniadecki at the University of Wilno, at the beginning of the XIXth century, and one of the disciples of this great naturalist was the famous poet and thinker, Słowacki, who proposed, about 1840, long before Spencer, a theory of evolution which is now wonderfully confirmed by the latest developments of biological science¹.'
