Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan 22 May 1984 to Norman Lear

I do believe the First Amendment is being somewhat distorted or misinterpreted by some who would, by government decree, make freedom of religion into freedom from religion. The First Amendment plainly is to ensure that in this nation there shall be no official state church. The amendment says the government shall not establish religion but it also just as plainly says the government shall not interfere in the practice of religion.*

Reagan A LIFE IN LETTERS
New York etc. : Free Press 2003, p. 643.

    * The First Amendment only applies to the acts of the U.S. Congress and not to any acts by any other persons or bodies ; and it clearly states that there should be no acts at all by the Congress on these matters.

It had escaped Mr. Reagan, apparently, that the inscription"In God We Trust" on the wall in the Capitol Building and such a one on the coins were disrelated issues. I do not know how the inscription on the wall came about or at what date ; but it seems likely that it was not introduced there by any acts of the Congress. (If I be somehow mistaken on this point the following theses should still stand.)

KThe inscription on the coins was introduced by an act of the Congress, sometime in the 1950's, and was a clear breach of the law as stated in the Constitution. (Observing the obvious). In other words, the Congress had then committed a plain crime : in so far as the language of the Constitution goes, the Congress had collectively broken the Law by the mere fact of having legislated any legislation on the matter into being.

It can observed that the chief causes of atheism by some (which Mr. Reagan had disliked) may be the excesses of theism by some others.   (WPT — 2 Dec 04)
