From POLAND, OLD AND NEW, 1948 by William John Rose ... Only once did Kochanowski turn from the daily concerns of existence to essay something in the grand manner, and it was done to grace the wedding (1577) of the future Chancellor, John Zamoyski, with a daughter of the Radziwiłł family. A drama in the classical style was the result, entitled The Dismissal of the Greek Envoys. Turning on the efforts of the Greeks to effect the restoration of Helen to her lawful spouse, the story sets forth the selfishness of Paris ad is fellow Trojans, who are ready to plunge the country into war and devastation rather than surrender private ambitions. In all this, rather shrewd blows were dealt at the rising tide of individualism in Polish public life, which made the play a political pamphlet of the first order ; with the same moral as the serious monograph on The Mending of the Commonwealth [1551] by the redoubtable champion of the common man, Andrew Frycz-Modrzewski (etc). |
