Giuseppe Peano

Knowing so many languages from babyhood, six at least, speaking up to date, I was fully aware of linguistic difficulties for human inter-communication. Since then, I studied the work of my friend, the great mathematician Peano and his Interlingua, and of late several others, and ultimately another synthetic language by Professor Hogben, a biologist and mathematician, who happens to be an Honorary Trustee of ours.     (Etc.)

Comment : continues the Count : ' All those issues, and indefinitely more, of synthetically possible languages seem to me to be hopeless. I believe that the only possible solution is to take a living language, simplify it to the utmost, and this could become an international language, which is so desperately needed today.'

He ultimately favored Basic English, the invention by Charles Kay Ogden. Howbeit, are we just to ditch the other attempts ?

First, there has been some writing produced by G. Peano himself with the use of his language. These are not to disappear, so far as I for one am concerned.

Second, such an attempt as Peano's may be of interest to the teachers and learners or Latin ; and perhaps of any Roman language.

Third, as a curiosum — and I would give this only on "hearsay" basis — I believe I have read somewhere that B. Russell and G. Frege were using Peano's language in their private correspondences. (I would not be able to give the exact sources right now : so, naturally, please do not take my word for it without having this datum corroborated). If this be the case, their formulations in this language may also be worthy some attention.
