From Memoirs by Juliusz Łukasiewicz On Sunday, March 26 [1939], I visited Mr. Bullitt in his little chateau in chantilly near Paris. Since we were both worried about [the] developments . . . and since we lacked detailed information, Bullitt contacted his colleague in Warsaw by telephone; (etc). During the evening Bullitt had a telephone report from his colleague in London, Ambassador Kennedy, that in accordance with Mr. Bullitts wishes he had visited Prime Minister Chamberlain at Chequers and had a talk with him as requested. Reportedly Chamberlain listened to Kennedys arguments with full understanding and gave him the impression that he entirely appreciated the gravity of the situation and the he was in a strong and resolute mood. He manifested this by telling Kennedy on his own initiative that, if Hitler provoked a conflict . .&nbps;, England would stand by Poland and would defend it.
From For the President, Personal and Secret, Orville Bullitt 1972 Lukasiewicz had been Ambassador in Moscow at the same time as Bullitt and went to Paris in 1936, so that the two men had parallel careers for seven years, and were close friends. Lukasiewicz twice went to Washington as the representative of the Polish government-in-exile and Bullitt was able to introduce him to many American diplomatic and political figures. On the very first meeting one was attracted to Lukasiewicz. Handsome, a man of great charm and sincerity, he became a warm friend of Bullitt's. the friendship lasted until Lukasiewicz's tragic death in Washington in 1951. For ten years in poor health, without financial resources and no official position, he had continued the struggle for Polish independence.
