( Dover reprint 1958. )   From MOLE PHILOSOPHY AND OTHER ESSAYS, 1927 by Cassius Jackson Keyser   STYLE When I was a very young man Herbert Spencer was in great vogue, so much so that people who did not know what the great thinker had said upon any given subject, and he wrote upon nearly all subjects, were not regarded as being in touch with the best thought of the time. One day a friend of mine who had a pretty strong scientific bent—he had just graduated as a doctor of medicine—noticed that in a published list of Spencer's writings there was a work entitled The Philosophy of Style. Not only was the young physician an enthusiastic admirer of Spencerian philosophy but he was also very fond of fine clothes. Se he somewhat excitedly drew my attention to the title, said he must have the work, and ordered a copy of it immediately. Fancy his disappointment when, upon receiving the essay, he found that the "Style" it dealt with was literary style. Declining to read it, he tossed it to me, saying: "Keep it or throw it away—I don't want the thing." Well, I read it with much interest, more than once. That was more than two score years ago. I now recall (accurately I believe) only one of its statements—the main thesis of the work. The thesis is "That style is most excellent which yields its contained idea with the least expenditure of mental power." The least expenditure by the reader or hearer, not by the writer or speaker, is what is meant, of course; pardon the explanation—Spencer, it is said, was without a sense of humor. [?] The dictum of the cosmic-minded Englishman agrees with the familiar saying of the cosmic-minded Aristotle, that clearness is the first quality of style. Clarity, however, is not favorable to fame. For clarity makes for understanding but most readers do not really desire to understand, they desire to be mystified: they crave a sense of the intimate presence of something too vast and deep for clear utterance. Make a list of ten or a dozen of the most famous teachers in the history of the world. If you study them, you will find that it is their dark saying, not the things they said clearly, that mankind has found to be sweet. Long after writing the preceding sentence I encountered these words of Anatole France: "Humanity is hardly ever passionately attracted by works of art or poetry which are not in some part or degree obscure and capable of various interpretations."
