Burges Johnson

From As Much As I Dare 1944 by Burges Johnson

NEW ENGLAND before modern means of transportation had broken down the barriers which hemmed it in and kept it distinctive ; New York City at the turn of the century, with the spell of the Gay 'Nineties still hovering over it ; and finally the ghost of the Old West, still flitting and sighing here and there amid the mountains and cattle lands beyond the Mississippi, not yet wholly exorcised by the law and the profits : these I hope are in this book.

And I have shyly nursed a secondary purpose. It has been my good fortune to come face to face with men and women who have directed the currents of our national life, and to live beside several channels where those currents flowed. To my children such figures are likely to move as puppets through the pages of history. But if I have talked to someone who saw Lafayette it is as though only one other man and I stood between my children and the great French Marquis, hand touching hand, and he is no longer mere paragraphs upon a printed page, but comes alive. So I have hoped to use myself in this book as a device by which these men and women might gain flesh-and-blood reality for my readers.
