Winston Churchill

At the time when pluralism was assuming form, the American spirit was on the look out for a new faith . . .  The pluralism of James ... forms a response to these American aspirations. In the mind of James, we find both the need of a world wherein action is possible and the idea of those loftier realities . . .  One of his admirers tells us that he is a friend, a help and comfort to all those ... who seek gropingly . . .  But it is not to these only that he appeals ; it is also to the man of action, to him who would create a vision of the world in harmony with democratic ideas.
On these points the novels of Winston Churchill afford interesting testimony. "Philosophy is no longer against religion, it is for it," says one of his characters, "and if you were to ask me to name the greatest masters of present-day religious thought I should mention William James and Royce. . . . Our principal philosophers are in harmony with the quickening social spirit of our times, and this spirit is a religious, a Christian spirit."
He dwells on this love of action and adventure with which philosophers are able to inspire us. "Life itself is an adventure ; there is no such thing as absolute safety." Was not this also the meaning of Roosevelt's article : The Great Adventure, written in January 1919 ? "Life and death are both part of the same Great Adventure."9

9 Compare Winston Churchill, The Inside of the Cup : "Religion, he began to perceive, was an undertaking." He speaks of the "sense of adventure, the palpitating fear and daring." Winston Churchill : A Far Country, p. 449 : "Democracy is an adventure, the great adventure of mankind. No adventure is safe, life itself is an adventure and neither is that safe. It's a hazard, as you and I have found out. The moment we tr to make life safe we lose all there is in it worth while. We have to leave what seem the safe things ; we have to wander and suffer in order to realise that the only true safety lies in development. We have to risk our lives and our souls." It would be interesting to compare such passages with the formula : The world safe for democracy.

(Jean Wahl, The Pluralist Philosophies of England & America, London : The Open Court Co., 1925, pp. 101-2). Comment   'The world safe for democracy' looks rank nonsense to me (for one) ; what exactly is that the world is purported to be safe for by any such formula ? It seems that the subject-matter of any such reasoning becomes more and more elusive as one goes.

One could postulate world safe enough for one not to expect some new war somewhere spun by some newspapermen or the like ; but that has nothing to do with 'democracy'.
