Lwów, Lvov

also known as Lemberg

Note   the name of the locality seems to have been derived from Lew, Lev, the Slav version of Leo, and it would have denoted the founder or an early owner of the place.

Compare : 'belonging to Krak, Kraków (Cracow) ; belonging to Kij' (pronounced key), Kijów (in Polish), or, Kiev, Kieff (the usual rendition from the Cyrillic alphabet).

The name Lemberg is a German word ; whether it has ever been used much in, well, Lemberg, does not seem certain. There is much detail in the history.

I have also seen Lviv and I can't form any notion whence such a spelling. It occurrs in the apparently most reliable authors. (?)
