Albert Thomas

From The Crucifixion of Liberty, Alexander Kerensky 1934

. . . In April [1917 (?)] a certain Captain Ermolenko reported at the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief, General Alexeev. He was smuggled by the Germans into the rear of our Sixth Army on the understanding that he would carry on an agitation in favor of separate peace. Ermolenko had been persuaded by his fellow-prisoners to make a pretense of accepting this proposal and arrived in Russia equipped with the necessary addresses and references as a German agent. He handed over all this information to the authorities and added that the Germans had the services of the leader of the Ukrainian separatists, Skoropis Ioltukhovsky and Lenin, who received money from Germany through a particular channel. The General Staff sent this data with a special report to me, in my capacity of Minister of War. By this time the government was already in possession of very confidential information, passed on to us by Albert Thomas, the French Minister of Munitions, who had arrived in St. Petersburg almost immediately after Lenin. While Albert Thomas was alive I was not in a position to disclose this our most serious source of information about Lenins treachery.

From Russia and History's Turning Point, Alexander Kerensky 1965

In mid-April the French minister of military supplies, Albert Thomas, arrived in Petrograd. He brought with him and passed on to Prince Lvov some extremely important information on the links between the Bolshevik group headed by Lenin and a number of German agents. The Frenchman stipulated, however, that only the ministers investigating this matter were to be told that he was the source of the information. At a secret conference a few days later, with the consent of Thomas, Prince Lvov entrusted Nekrasov, Tereshchenko, and myself with the investigation of this serious matter.

On May 17 ( or it may have been the next day) I received from General Denikins chief of staff a letter enclosing a copy of notes taken at the interrogation by the intelligence officers on his staff of Yermolenko, an ensign of the 16th Siberian Rifle Regiment. While a prisoner of the Germans, this young officer had consented to act as a German spy and ha received the necessary instructions, money, and addresses from two German staff officers, Schiditski and Luebers (whose actual existence was established). According to Yermolenko, he ha been given a similar assignment by a certain Skoropis-Ioltukhovsky, chairman of the Russian section of the Union for the Liberation of the Ukraine, which had been operating in Austria since 1914 on funds issued by Wilhelm II, and also by—Lenin.

In view of Thomas stipulation, no one else in Russia, not even the other ministers or the supreme commander, was told anything about this.
