Pan-Slavism

...   There are about 140,000,000 Slavic peoples scattered about Europe . . . (etc).³ The aim of the Pan-Slavist movement varied with its different proponents.   (..)   The father of Pan-Slavism was a Croat by the name of Krijanitcha, who lived in the 17th century. On the political side, he advocated a union of all Slavic peoples . .      He also sponsored the development of a Pan-Slavonic literature, ideas which were carried forward in the 19th century by the great Slovak poet, Kollar. A number of Pan-Slavic Congresses were also held, in 1848, in 1867 and in 1908.¹ While the southern Slavs, under the iron rule of Austro-Hungary, welcomed a movement for their deliverance, they did not relish any development which would place them under Russia, which, many believed, would merely be substituting one despotism for another. The ties of race were too intangible to give this positive aspect of the Pan-Slavic movement popular support.   (Etc.)

Comment : the ties of 'race' may be a murky concept, but the similarities of the languages are not.

It seems (to me) that many ways of "general epistemological scientific linguistic research" can be carried together with the nearest of kin. The mere knowledge of the true historic data may help resolve many a present-day problem.   (WPT 19 Dec 04)
