From Little Missions, Septimus Despencer 1932

Serb and Croat are for all practical purposes identical—closer to one another indeed by a long way than Lowland Scots and English.  The only difference is in the script, Serb being written in Cyrillic and Croat in Latin letters.  To the peasant eye, it is true,t he difference looms large.  He may not be able to read either Latin or Cyrillic ; but he knows that the Cyrillic letters stand for Orthodoxy and the Latin for Catholicism.

London : Edward Arnold 1932, pp. 90-91.
