From Russia and the Peace by Bernard Pares, 1944 No student of Russia can disregard the Polish question. We have seen that the history of the two countries has been inextricably interlocked, and when I wrote my own History of Russia, I had to devote more than a page of index to Poland. In the time of the Russian oppression of Poland, a citizen of a free country like my own instinctively sympathized with the Poles; and, as I think will be realized from the following details, I can claim to write as a friend of both peoples.
