Louis Francis Budenz

From Autobiography, George Samuel Schuyler 1966

...   I got a sound drubbing from Red publications and some of the Negro newspapers, although several of the latter came to my defense.

Most amusing of all was a letter from the American Workers Party's provisional organizing committee of which A. J. Muste was chairman ; J. B. S. Hardman of Columbia University, vice-chairman ; Louis Francis Budenz, later editor of the Daily Worker, executive secretary ; and Jack Lever, treasurer. This party had been formally launched on July 4, 1934, and its official organ was Labor Action, to which I had once contributed an article on the Agricultural Adjustment Act and its influence. The letter was signed by Ann Shane, secretary of the membership committee, and Larry Cohen, New York organizer. Dated September 28, 1834, it read :

Dear Comrade : Serious charges have been brought against you by Party comrades because of the nature of certain of your recent contributions to the Courier and American Spectator. You are requested to appear before the next meeting of the Membership Committee of the New York Branch to answer these charges. . .

These people evidently assumed that because I contributed one piece to Labor Action, that made me a member of their so-called party. . .
