PAULSBORO, NEW JERSEY--May 29, 2001--ExxonMobil Foundation announced today a contribution of $55,000 to the Borough of Paulsboro and Township of Greenwich to fund a summer work-study program. The seven-week long Earn & Learn program provides paid classroom and work experience for 18 high school students. The program begins Monday, June 25, 2001 and ends Friday, August 10, 2001.
Students will earn three and one-half credits toward high school graduation by attending a science course at the ExxonMobil Research Center in Paulsboro two days a week. The course, "Science Seminar," is a hands-on science program consisting of field work, data collection and discussion in a classroom setting, during which ExxonMobil field experts will be brought in to speak to the students.
Three days each week, students in the Earn & Learn Program will work for Paulsboro and Greenwich public works departments mowing grass, painting curbs and fences, replacing road signs and assisting with road maintenance.
"This program has been an integral part of our community for more than ten years," said Rich Mayan, Principal of Paulsboro High School. "It provides an excellent opportunity for our students to gain a valuable work and classroom experience, while earning a respectable wage. It is a unique partnering opportunity involving the government, business, and school communities. We are lucky to have the support of ExxonMobil in our community."
Currently, ExxonMobil hosts similar summer work-study programs in cities around the country including Beaumont and Dallas, TX, Charlottesville, VA, Joliet, IL, and Torrance, CA.
