With the engine out I got a chance to push the car outside so I can work on the engine so I clicked a couple of pics. |

Now that I got a base line with the car stock it was time to do some modification to start to make her faster.I still had the factory warranty so I cuold go to wild just yet just in case something happened with only owning the car for a couple of months.Over the winter of 89 I had to drive it threw the snow because it was the only car I had at the time. I bought some underdrive pulleys and some rims from an 87 mustang. They were the 15" 10 hole LX style as can be seen in the pictures above. After doing some research I bought some 265/50/15 BFG street tires for the back to give it that BIG look at the back. Plus they would hook better than the TRX tire that were stock. I also installed a K&N snubstack in the air filter. Now it was time to take it back to the track in April of 90. It was a cool spring day and the car was working good with the new stuff. The best time for this day was a [email protected] MPH. with a 2.39 60 ft time. The car picked up .435 sec and 2 MPH over the first time meaning the pulleys added about 15 horsepower over stock. The tires also hooked better and now the plan was for more mods. |

The next round of mods to be done was to get rid of the stock single exhaust and go to duals. I purchased some cheap BLACKJACK shorty headers ( they really were crappy design and only 1 1/2" tubes) and some WALKER DYNOMAX SUPER TURBO mufflers in the 2 1/4' size. I also bought the tailpipes to match the mufflers. I bought a double hump trans cross member and got the duals installed and hooked up at my friendly muffler shop. I also played around with the carb increasing the jet size to 66 in the stock carb and changed the PV to a 6.5. Installed a holley QUICK CHANGE KIT and installed a yellow sec. spring. Got back to the strip on Aug. 18/90. Now we finally broke into the 14 sec zone. The best was a 14.917 @ 93.36 MPH with a 2.26 sec short time. The car picked up almost 2 tenths from before and 1 1/2 MPH with the exhaust change. Unfortuately the transmission destroyed itself taking out third gear and ending the day before I really got to learn to drive it. Had to take it in and get FORD to rebuild it under warranty ( gotta love extended warranty ). They rebuilt the transmission and it was back for more mods. |

The original 7.5" rearend could not handle all the abuse that I was planning in the next couple of years so a 8.8" FORD MOTORSPORT 4.10 31 splined rear axle assembly was bought and installed in 1993. I paid $920(Cdn.) for the complete assembly with the 31 splined axles. I also bought a used T-5 transmisson out of an 89 mustang. I didn't think the original trans would handle the new power so a late model stronger one was bought and installed. A 10.5" clutch package was bought from CENTRAL COAST MUSTANG to replace the original wearing out 10" unit. |
