Science of Golf

After a gradual increase in the early 1980's, average driving distance on the PGA Tour remained virtually unchanged form 1986 to 1994. Since then, it has exploded, changing the nature of the game at the hightest level.

The most dramatic advance came from 2000 to 2001, when the average driving distance increased by 6.2 yards.

The advance comes mostly from better equipment. New materials and technology are at the forefront of golf club design.
