FADE IN:
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - NIGHT
Your average high school stands before us. Balloons and
streamers decorate the front. The parking full of vehicles.
SUPER: PROM NIGHT. 1996.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - GYM - NIGHT
A cheaply decorate gym holds host to the High School Prom.
Nothing extravagant but sweet.
Students mill around the punch bowl. Others dance on the
floor. Your classic High School clubs are represented and
only share the floor with themselves: Nerds, freaks, jocks
and cheerleaders.
Making their way through the gym doors is LANCE, MARK, and
JAKE. Each with their respective dates, SARA, ALICE, and
CARRIE. The girls are in a festive mood and feeling really
good and laughing while taking in the decor. (We'll call this
group the "gang").
Mark looks back.
MARK
Come on, Tommy.
TOMMY somberly walks into the gym. His arm barren of a date.
This is the last place Tommy wants to be.
TOMMY
Why did you drag me here?
SARA
Oh, come on. You know you want to
be here.
TOMMY
Oh, yeah, I'm having a blast. I'm
the only person here without a
date.
LANCE
It's not about having a date it's
about having a good time, man. This
is the last time for everyone to
get together.
TOMMY
Is that why everyone here has a
date?
JAKE
No, that's because they asked
someone to go with them.
TOMMY
Thanks, Jake.
JAKE
Well, shit, dude, you should have
asked someone, you could have
gotten a date.
ALICE
Yeah, you're a great guy, Tommy.
You could have gotten a date easy.
Mark quickly turns to Alice.
MARK
What's that suppose to mean?
ALICE
Nothing, Mark. God! You're so
jealous of everything I say!
Alice storms off.
MARK
See, look, you already ruined the
goddamn prom!
Mark follows after her.
The rest of the group slowly pushes towards the bottom
bleachers and take a seat.
SARA
(to Lance)
Gym looks nice.
LANCE
Yeah, looks good. To bad they
didn't have more to spend on it.
JAKE
No they spent the rest of it on the
football team.
CARRIE
(to Jake)
Are you dancing with me tonight?
JAKE
Sure, but I pick the song.
CARRIE
I'll be waiting all night then.
JAKE
(laughs)
Oh well.
Carrie smacks Jake on the leg.
CARRIE
You told me you'd dance with me.
JAKE
I will, babe. Prom just started,
we'll have all night.
CARRIE
But I want to dance to something I
like.
JAKE
I don't like your songs.
CARRIE
I don't like your shows but I watch
them with you.
JAKE
Yeah, but I don't ask you too.
CARRIE
I just want one dance, Jake.
Please.
Tommy leans into Jake's viewpoint and grins. Jake sighs.
JAKE
Okay. You pick the song.
Carrie beams and hugs Jake.
CARRIE
Baby, that so sweet.
Jake leans into the hug and gives Tommy the evil eye. Tommy
keeps smiling.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER
Tommy is moping around outside. He leans against the fence.
Tommy takes a drink of punch. Oh God, its horrible, Tommy
tosses it.
The side door opens. Mark is yelling to someone in the gym.
MARK
Yeah?! Well... bitch!
(turns and sees Tommy)
Hey, man what's up?
Mark joins Tommy on the fence.
TOMMY
Not much. Having fun?
MARK
What? Oh that? Blah. She'll get
over it.
TOMMY
What's the problem?
MARK
I dunno.
TOMMY
Shouldn't you try and clear it up
with her?
MARK
She's just going to yell.
TOMMY
Do something that won't make her
yell.
MARK
Like what?
TOMMY
I dunno, ask her to dance.
MARK
Dude, she's pissed off at me. She
just wants to be away from me.
TOMMY
Do you love her?
MARK
Yeah.
TOMMY
Tell her.
MARK
What?
TOMMY
That you love her.
MARK
I do.
TOMMY
No, right now. She's going to
remember this night, man.
No matter who she's with in the
future, she'll always remember this
night. If you're with her in the
future she'll remember the fight,
but she'll also remember that you
loved her and you tried to make the
best of the night for her. To wipe
away the tears you caused her.
A worried look shadows Mark's face.
MARK
Are you going to kiss me?
TOMMY
No. Man --
MARK
Dude, look, it's not that easy.
TOMMY
I know, but she'll want this night.
She'll say, "It's for us." In part
that is true, but it's also for
her. Give her this night, man. It's
just one night. You can do that.
MARK
...I guess.
TOMMY
Just give her some time then go
back in there.
MARK
...yeah.
JEAN (O.S.)
I don't care, Michael!
Tommy and Mark watch JEAN COLDER angrily walk down the
parking lot from the front entrance. Jean is the high school
princess. Looks, beauty, grace, every high school boy's
dream. Also she is completely untouchable as her Jock
boyfriend, MICHAEL BRINKER, chases after her.
Brinker is your classic asshole jock boyfriend. You can't
imagine why this girl is with him but she is.
BRINKER
Where are you going?
JEAN
Away from you!
BRINKER
What the hell did I do?
JEAN
What haven't you done?
BRINKER
Shit, Jean you're fucking crazy!
All you have to do is just stand
there and look good and you can't
even do that without saying
something.
JEAN
I'm not your arm piece, Michael.
BRINKER
That's what you've been for the
past four years. You're here to
make me look good in front of the
school.
JEAN
(sarcastic)
The captain of the football team
bangs the head cheerleader, right?
BRINKER
(honest)
Right. Now get your ass in there.
JEAN
No. I'm tired of your crap. I'm not
going back in there.
Jean walks away from Brinker. Brinker fumes with anger.
BRINKER
Fuck you, bitch! I don't fucking
need you! I can have any of these
whores!
Jeans keeps walking.
JEAN
Then take them!
Brinker turns and heads back to the door and kicks it. Then
swings it open and enters.
Tommy watches Jean walk to a picnic table under a cherry
tree. She sits down and cries with her back to us. It's
obvious Tommy's heart goes out to her.
MARK
Go for it.
TOMMY
What?
MARK
Jean.
TOMMY
What are you talking about?
MARK
How long have you had the hots for
her?
TOMMY
Junior High.
MARK
Right and you've been single since
then. Go talk to her.
TOMMY
Now?
MARK
It'll show you have a sensitive
side.
TOMMY
Mark I'm not going to make a move
on her when she's --
MARK
You're not, dude. You obviously
like the chick. Go talk to her.
Make her feel better like you told
me to.
Mark goes to the side entrance and enters the gym. Tommy
gazes at Jean.
TOMMY
(sighs)
Man...
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - CHERRY TREE - MOMENTS LATER
Tommy cautiously makes his way towards Jean. Her sobs become
louder with every step he takes toward her. Tommy struggles
within himself to say something but what? A tree limb SNAPS
under Tommy's foot.
Tommy's heart drops.
Jean turns around frightened.
Tommy searches for the right words but all he can come up
with is:
TOMMY
Hi.
Jean turns her back to Tommy, embarrassed.
JEAN
Hi.
Tommy takes his handkerchief out and gently brushes it on her
bare shoulder. Jean's eyes move towards it. She slowly takes
it from his hand.
JEAN (cont'd)
Thank you.
TOMMY
No problem.
Jean, as dignified as she can, begins patting her tears away,
careful not to spread her massacre. Tommy, stands like a log.
Lost.
JEAN
Tommy, right?
TOMMY
Huh? Oh, yeah.
JEAN
We have chemistry together.
TOMMY
And history.
JEAN
Right. You sit in front of Mr.
Simmons.
TOMMY
Yeah... Uh, are you okay?
Battling tears Jean lets out a deep sigh.
JEAN
Yeah. It's just...
The tears come back. Tommy looks back to the High School
hopeful someone is coming but no one comes, they're all
alone.
TOMMY
(mouths)
Shit!
Scared out of his mind Tommy sits next to Jean. She politely
turns from him, covering her face.
TOMMY (cont'd)
Uh... I'm not very good at this
type of thing.
JEAN
It's okay. I'm very good at this
type of thing. It's all I've done
all year.
Tommy sits in silence for a beat.
TOMMY
If he hurts you, why are you with
him?
JEAN
I don't know. Maybe, its because he
was the quaterback and I was the
head cheerleader when we first
started. All my friends were dating
the players. Real stupid of me
following along, right?
Tommy shakes his head, yes, but she doesn't see it.
TOMMY
Maybe you were just young?
JEAN
It was good the first several
years, and now it's just...
TOMMY
Well, having a high school
sweetheart is a common thing,
staying with that person isn't.
Especially after High School. Four
years is a long time in teen years.
JEAN
Yeah. Do you have problems like
this with your girlfriend?
TOMMY
No.
JEAN
Figures.
TOMMY
I'm single.
JEAN
You are?
TOMMY
Been single my whole life.
Jean looks back at Tommy interested in this revelation.
JEAN
Really?
TOMMY
Yup.
JEAN
Why? You seem like a nice guy.
TOMMY
I guess I've been waiting for the
right girl, the one I've always
dreamed about and wished for, but
when I found her she was already
taken with someone else.
JEAN
That sucks.
TOMMY
Yup.
JEAN
Did you ever tell her?
TOMMY
No. No. No. Not as long as she's
with the other guy. I would never
do that.
JEAN
I know a lot of guys who would.
TOMMY
I do too but I couldn't do
something like that. I wouldn't be
comfortable with someone telling my
girl they liked her so how could I
do it to someone else?
JEAN
See. Nice guy.
TOMMY
We do finish last.
JEAN
You believe that?
Tommy laughs to himself.
TOMMY
Yeah, pretty much. Yeah.
(beat)
Are you going back into the Prom?
JEAN
No.
TOMMY
Are you sure?
JEAN
Mmm-hmm.
TOMMY
Have they played your favorite
song?
JEAN
No.
TOMMY
Slow song?
JEAN
Yeah.
TOMMY
So they haven't played your song
yet, and you're destined to win
Prom Queen and you're not going?
JEAN
No.
TOMMY
Well... I could go in there with
you.
Jean thinks it over.
JEAN
You could.
TOMMY
At least then neither one of us
would be embarrassed about going to
the prom alone. Plus I have another
handkerchief if you don't like my
dancing.
Jean laughs.
TOMMY (cont'd)
Ah, look at that, a smile.
Jean looks over at him. A heartwarming smile radiates from
her. Tommy is taken with her. God, she's beautiful.
Tommy stands up and extends his hand to her. Jean takes it.
Tommy looks down at her hand then looks into her eyes and
smiles.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - GYM - MOMENTS LATER
Tommy opens the door as Jean steps through. Jean takes
Tommy's arm and holds it. Tommy points to the punch bowl and
they head toward it.
Tommy's friends watch in shock.
LANCE
Look at this.
ALICE
How did that happen?
MARK
She broke up with Brinker. I guess
he made her feel better.
CARRIE
I'll say. They look cute together.
Tommy's actually...
SARA
Happy.
ON THE STAGE the DJ begins to make an announcement.
DJ
Ladies and gentlemen. It's now time
to crow your High School Senior
Prom King and Queen!
The students cheer. The DJ opens up the first envelope.
DJ (cont'd)
Okay. This year's Queen is... Jean
Colder.
The crowd cheers. The spotlight searches the crowd and finds
her next to Tommy. Tommy claps for her and points her for the
stage. She's embarrassed but manages a wave to the crowd and
heads towards the stage.
Upon her assent to the stage she is give an crown, a bouquet
of flowers and a scepter.
DJ (cont'd)
And this year's King...
(opens envelope)
Michael Brinker!
With the except of Tommy and his friends the students cheer.
The jocks go nuts cheering for their leader. Brinker heads
toward the stage like a god.
He glances at Jean then takes the crown and crowns himself
with it. His people cheer for him. He takes it all in.
DJ (cont'd)
Now as it is customary, would you
two please lead the school for the
last song of the evening?
TOMMY is heartbroken.
TOMMY
Last song?
JEAN, not really wanting to dance with Brinker, whispers to
the DJ.
JEAN
(whispers)
I don't really...
DJ
Come on don't be shy! You two
lovebirds get out there.
The students cheer Brinker and Jean on.
BRINKER
Come on babe, lets not keep our
subjects waiting.
Brinker holds out his hand, what a dick. Jean takes it and
heads down the stairs with him.
They head to the middle of the floor. The lights dim and a
slow songs starts up. They stand close together and begin to
dance with Brinker leading. Jean refuses to look at him.
The rest of the students begin to dance. Even Mark and Alice.
BRINKER (cont'd)
Look. I'm sorry for what I said. I
didn't mean it. I just got angry.
My pride was hurt.
JEAN
You didn't have to say those things
to me.
BRINKER
I know that, babe, and I am sorry.
JEAN
And you think that is going to make
things better?
BRINKER
I don't know. Will it?
Jean thinks about it.
JEAN
It's a start.
BRINKER
Can you at least look at me?
Jean looks at him, coldly. Brinker lets loose a pretty boy
smile. Jean tries to resist it.
JEAN
I'm sorry I got mad, too.
BRINKER
It wasn't your fault, it was mine.
Tommy walks closer to the two and watches.
JEAN
Will things be different between
us?
BRINKER
Absolutely.
JEAN
And your not going to say things
like you could have any woman you
want to here?
BRINKER
Of course I won't. What about you?
JEAN
What do you mean?
BRINKER
What about the guys here?
JEAN
You're the only guy I want here,
Michael. I love you.
Tommy is crushed. He slowly turns and starts to walk away.
BRINKER
Good, and just to make sure.
Brinker steps to the side, turns Tommy around and sucker
punches him -- BOOM! Tommy hits the floor.
BRINKER (cont'd)
I saw you walk in with her. You
touch her again and I'll kill you,
boy.
Brinker takes Jean by the hand and walks off with her. Jean
looks back once to see Tommy slowly coming too, but leaves
with Brinker.
The song ends, bringing the Prom to a close.
DJ
That's it folks! Now go on and get
out of here!
The students giggle and start filling out. Tommy sits up and
watches the students leave. Tommy's friend's look over at
him. Mark starts to head over but Lance stops him and shakes
his head, "no."
Tommy raises his knees to his chest and puts his head in
them.
EXT. ACF - NIGHT
An old warehouse basks in the moonlight.
SUPER: 10 YEARS LATER.
INT. ACF - SECURITY OFFICE - NIGHT
Tommy sits behind a chair listening to the radio. Tommy
hasn't changed much. His hair is shorter and he hasn't shaved
in two days, but he's still the same guy.
Tommy looks up at the clock: 3 am.
TOMMY
This sucks.
Tommy walks outside the workers' entrance and stands outside
the fence taking in the moonlight and the empty streets.
Tommy sighs and heads back into the office. He presses the
close button on the wall. The front gate closes with a loud
METAL CLANG.
INT. ACF - PUNCH AND SHEAR - NIGHT
Tommy walks into the back entrance of Punch and Shear. A
gigantic complex full of steel, cutting tools, etc. The
entrance is a a good twenty feet in the air with steel steps
leading up the side.
This could easily look like something from a Nazi propaganda
film or a place a speech would be made for a union meeting in
a seventies film.
In Tommy's hand is a Detex Clock. A large round clock about
six inches wide from the old days of security. Tommy looks at
the strap attached to it and wraps it around his neck and
walks out the edge of the Entrance and throws open his arms.
TOMMY
FLAVOR FLAV!!!!!!!
(mocks flav's laugh)
Hehehehehehehehehehehe
The yell and laugh reverberates through the empty building.
Tommy stares at the audience of steel.
TOMMY (cont'd)
Guess it's funnier when someone
else is here.
(looks to the sky)
You thought it was funny right?
EXT. LANCE'S HOUSE - DAY
Hiding from the sun under a tree, Mark, Jake, and Tommy sit
on some lawn chairs drinking soda. The guys all still look
basically the same. Different hair, a little chubbier.
MARK
Damn it's hot.
LANCE
Yup.
Lance finishes spraying water into a bucket and starts
washing his car.
JAKE
How's the new job working out for
you, Tommy?
TOMMY
Blah.
JAKE
You love it that much?
TOMMY
Oh, what's not to love?
LANCE
Well, at least you have one.
Mark shoots Lance an evil look.
MARK
What's that suppose to me?
LANCE
Nothing.
JAKE
Are you on straight Midnights?
TOMMY
Yeah.
JAKE
That's going to make it hard to
date.
TOMMY
I don't date anyone now.
JAKE
Dude, we told you we could change
that.
TOMMY
Why are you guys always insisting
that I go out with someone?
MARK
You look lonely.
TOMMY
I'm not lonely.
LANCE
Are you sure?
TOMMY
I choose to be alone, there's a
difference.
LANCE
Right.
TOMMY
I do.
LANCE
Sure.
MARK
I still have some numbers, man. We
all do.
JAKE
We kept them just for you.
TOMMY
Is that what you told your wife?
JAKE
It was Carrie's idea.
TOMMY
Great, even she thinks I'm lonely.
MARK
Just amuse us and go on a few
dates, man. We've been busting your
balls over this for fifteen years,
you're bound to give in any day
now.
Tommy thinks about it. They're right. Do it and get it over
with.
TOMMY
If I do this will you quit asking
me about it?
MARK
Sure.
LANCE
You have to do one month of serious
dating.
TOMMY
One month?
LANCE
Yeah.
TOMMY
I don't -- fine. Who picks first?
INT. ROCK CLUB - NIGHT
A crowd dances to music. Guys mingle with girls. Tommy sits
at the bar alone waiting for his date.
MARK (V.O.)
Her name is Barbra, but call her
Barb. She's a really sweet girl.
Tommy turns to see BARB walking towards him. Barb is in her
twenties, long blond hair and a stunning red dress.
BARB
Tommy?
Tommy stands up.
TOMMY
Yeah.
Barb extends her hand. Tommy takes it.
BARB
Hello, I'm Barb.
TOMMY
Hi.
Tommy brushes off the stool. Barb takes a seat next to Tommy.
BARB
How are you doing?
TOMMY
Okay, I guess. A little nervous.
BARB
Don't worry, there's nothing to be
worried about. I won't bite.
(smiles)
Unless you want me to.
TOMMY
(to the bartender)
Check.
Barb laughs.
BARB
Aww, you're cute. So, tell me, how
often do you do go out?
TOMMY
Never.
BARB
Never?
TOMMY
Nope. What about you?
BARB
Oh, once or twice a week but don't
worry, we'll have fun.
(checks out the dance
floor)
Do you like to dance?
CUT TO:
INT. ROCK CLUB - LATER
Barb is dancing up a storm. We PULL BACK to see her dancing
with two guys in very close quarters. Tommy stands off to the
side, confused.
INT. CHURCH - DAY
The congregating sways side to side and clapping hands to an
old church hymn.
LANCE (V.O.)
Debbie is a really cute, good
Christian girl. Strong beliefs,
you'll get along great.
Tommy is standing next to DEBBIE. True to Lance's words she's
cute, cleanly dressed and nothing is showing that shouldn't.
Tommy and Debbie are having a great time.
The congregation finishes the hymn and the Preacher takes the
podium.
PREACHER
Amen, brother, amen. I can feel the
Lord in this church tonight. His
great and mighty presence is here!
The gathering agrees with, "Amens" and "yes, brother."
PREACHER (cont'd)
I want all the true believers to
come up here on this stage and show
they're believers!
(points at Tommy)
You, brother!
Tommy looks around then points to himself.
PREACHER (cont'd)
Yes, brother. Are you a believer in
the Lord?
Tommy looks to Debbie. Debbie's big brown eyes stare back at
him.
TOMMY
Sure, why not.
The assembly laughs along with the Preacher.
PREACHER
Well, get up here, son!
Tommy glances over at Debbie. Debbie encourages him to go on
along with the rest of the church. Tommy gives in and starts
making his way down the pew as the church organ starts
blasting away.
PREACHER (cont'd)
Praise the Lord! Oh, Glory! All
believers step up and approach the
throne!
Tommy and several others approach the steps and make their
way up to the Preacher, as the congregation gives them a
round of applause. Tommy is the first in line.
PREACHER (cont'd)
Do you believe in the Lord?
TOMMY
Yeah.
The preacher puts his arms around Tommy and leads him to the
back of the stage where a small cage is set up.
PREACHER
Show everyone your faith in the
Lord, son.
The Preacher steps back. Tommy turns and looks down into the
cage.
SNAKES!
Only a dozen or so but that doesn't stop Tommy from SCREAMING
LIKE A GIRL!
TOMMY
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
PREACHER
Pick up one of those serpents, son.
Tommy looks down at the snake den.
TOMMY
... NO! Are you crazy, man?!
PREACHER
Son, the Lord has command that you
pick up that serpent.
TOMMY
Yeah, well, maybe He should speak a
little louder because I didn't hear
Him.
Tommy turn to see a snake on top of the cage HISSING. And off
he goes! Down the stage, past the pews, and out the front
door.
INT. TAMARA'S APARTMENT - HALLWAY - TIMELESS
Tommy knocks on the front door.
JAKE (V.O.)
Tamara is the hottest chick I've
ever dated, man. This chick is
awesome.
The door opens and TAMARA opens the door. WOW! This woman has
everything working for her. Perfect hair, face and body.
Tommy hands her some flowers.
TOMMY
Hi, Tamara? I'm Tommy.
TAMARA
Hello, there.
(takes the flowers)
Thank you. Come on in.
Tommy nervously walks into...
INT. TAMARA'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Tamara closes the door and sets the flowers into an empty
vase. SOFT MUSIC PLAYS over the stereo. For some reason the
room is rather dark.
TOMMY
So, uh... How's it going?
TAMARA
It's going great. Wasn't expecting
flowers.
TOMMY
I didn't know what you liked, Jake
didn't tell me.
TAMARA
(laughs)
Jake doesn't know.
TOMMY
I kinda figured.
TAMARA
Yeah, that's Jake. Look, um, I'm
not quite finished getting ready
yet, so just make yourself at home
and I'll be right out, sweetie.
TOMMY
Okay.
Tamara heads back into her bathroom and gently closes the
door. Tommy walks around the living room looking at pictures.
A NOISE softly comes out from the bathroom. Tommy hears it
then looks towards the door.
The door pops opens, just a little bit. Tommy heads towards
the bathroom. The noise is more discernible now... a
VIBRATING NOISE.
Tommy is right at the door. He thinks it over. Hell with it.
Tommy takes a peak and sees Tamara shaving her neck with an
electric razor blade. Tommy is horrified.
Tommy turns to high tail it out and runs into a wall -- BAM!
Tommy runs out the apartment with a bloody nose.
EXT. LANCE'S HOUSE - DAY
Lance is at the grill prepping food. Jake and Mark sit in
their respective lawn chairs watching Tommy. Tommy walks
around in circles and speaking with a high pitched nasal
voice with two cotton balls in his nose.
TOMMY
No! I'm not doing this anymore.
LANCE
It's only been three dates. You
still have a whole month left.
TOMMY
Three horrible dates!
Lances throws some burgers on the grill.
LANCE
Well, they can't all be winners,
man. That's part of the romance of
it. Trial and error.
TOMMY
Romance? Romance? Snakes is not
romance. My date dancing with two
other men is not romance.
(points at Jake)
And that chick was a dude!
JAKE
Huh? What? Hey, no way!
TOMMY
Yes, she was!
JAKE
Tamara is not a dude. Trust me, I
know.
TOMMY
Think about it, did anything seem
wrong when you dated her?
JAKE
No.
TOMMY
No, really think about it. I saw
this chick shaving her face.
JAKE
Are you sure about that?
TOMMY
Yes. Now was there anything odd
about her that you remember?
Jake goes into deep thought. Everyone turns to him.
JAKE
The date seemed okay.
TOMMY
And after?
JAKE
...she liked it dark ...real dark.
A moment of deep thought. Realization hits Jake about an
event only he knows and we can tell it's not a good one.
JAKE (cont'd)
OH, GOD! ...OH, GOD! ...OH, GOD!
LANCE
Calm down, Jake.
JAKE
YOU CALM DOWN! IT WAS A DUDE! OH
GOD, IT WAS A DUDE! I'LL KILL'EM!
MARK
Aw, man, I bet you can't wait to
get your hands on him.
JAKE
DAMN, RIGHT!
MARK
Just like last time.
JAKE
HELL YEAH! ...HEY!
Mark bursts out laughing.
TOMMY
(to Jake)
Man, I can't believe you did that
to me.
JAKE
You?! What about me?!
LANCE
Tommy. Look, everyone has dating
nightmares.
JAKE
NOT LIKE MINE!
LANCE
Well, okay, Jake's probably the
worst out of all of us, but hang in
there, man. We'll get you home.
TOMMY
Lance, seriously, I can't do this
anymore.
LANCE
Okay, how's this. You don't trust
the ones we pick out for you, we'll
let the girls find one. God knows
Sara loves to play match maker.
MARK
Uh, Lance? I don't know. She's had
a couple of mishaps, too. Remember
Billy and Shelly?
LANCE
Hey, I did not support that
relationship. That was all her,
Mark, not me.
MARK
She put two people with gambling
debts in the thousands together and
that's all you can say?
LANCE
Like I said, I didn't support that
decision. She just thought they
could seek counseling together and
love would take over the rest. Now
other than that she's been decent.
MARK
What about Janet and Bret? Two
raging alcoholics.
LANCE
That was totally her fault. I never
even liked those two.
TOMMY
Look, I really appreciate this but,
it's over guys.
JAKE
My life is over. Carrie's going to
leave me. I'll lose my job. I'll
have to move back in with Mark.
MARK
No you're not.
(to Tommy)
Tommy, just take a break for now.
You'll come back swinging for the
fences in no time, man.
TOMMY
I don't know. I just don't want to
go through this crap anymore.
MARK
Dude, you have to go through the
bad ones to find the good one. It's
the only way.
LANCE
Gee, Mark that sounds like
something I'd say.
MARK
I got tired of you having all the
good lines.
EXT. ACF - PLANT - NIGHT
Tommy walks out from the Office and out to the worker's
entrance to the plant. He walks around, kicking a few rocks.
Tommy looks up at the full moon, shinning down brightly upon
him. Under his breath Tommy sings.
TOMMY
(singing)
Blue Moon.
You saw me standing alone.
Without a dream in my heart.
Without a love of my own.
Blue Moon.
You know just what I was there for.
You heard me saying a prayer for.
Someone I really could care for.
Tommy's eyes swell up and tear slides down his face. He heads
back inside, alone.
EXT. PARK - MORNING
The small local park. Full of joggers, lovers, and jocks. A
beautiful day for beautiful people. Everyone is sharing the
day with someone.
Except Tommy.
Tommy sits on the park bench. He has a bag of bread crumbs.
He tosses a handful onto the ground. The crumbs fall next to
older bread crumbs. Tommy has been here for a while, the
birds haven't. In fact there are no birds.
TOMMY
(under his breath)
Not even a fucking bird to feed,
man.
Tommy sets the bag down on the bench. Tommy leans over and
rubs his eyes. Footsteps are heard coming from the jogging
trail. Tommy parts his fingers and sees
JEAN.
Ten years older but still looking fantastic. She's jogging by
herself. Tommy is stunned. A football BLASTS Tommy upside the
head. Tommy hits the ground hard.
Jean sees it but doesn't noticed who it is. She is just as
surprised as Tommy was as she recognizes him.
One of the FOOTBALL PLAYERS runs over to Tommy.
FOOTBALL PLAYER
Are you okay?
Tommy sits up.
TOMMY
Yeah, I'm fine.
The player helps Tommy sit up on the bench.
FOOTBALL PLAYER
Man, I'm really sorry about that. I
just had surgery on my throwing
arm. The doctor said it'll take a
while --
TOMMY
It's okay.
FOOTBALL PLAYER
You sure, man?
TOMMY
Sure.
FOOTBALL PLAYER
We have some Gatorade, you want
some?
TOMMY
No, I'm fine. Really.
FOOTBALL PLAYER
Okay, man. I'm really sorry.
Tommy waves, "It's cool." The Player picks up the ball and
takes off back to his fellow players. Surprisingly they're
not joking about it.
FOOTBALL PLAYER 2
Is he okay?
FOOTBALL PLAYER
Yeah. Man, I feel bad about that.
TOMMY rubs the back of his head.
JEAN (O.S.)
Tommy?
Tommy completely forgot about Jean. Tommy quickly tries to
compose himself and dusts the dirt off of himself.
TOMMY
Hey, Jean.
Tommy stands up, still little woozy from the shot to the
head. Jean quickly heads over to him and helps him sit back
down.
JEAN
Wooaaa, sit down.
TOMMY
Sorry.
JEAN
It's okay. You don't need to stand.
This isn't the fifties, Tommy.
TOMMY
Sorry.
JEAN
And you don't have to be sorry all
the time.
TOMMY
Sor--
(catches himself)
Okay.
JEAN
Besides, I guess I should be the
one to say that to you.
TOMMY
For what?
JEAN
The prom.
TOMMY
Oh. ...yeah.
JEAN
I guess you hate me for that.
TOMMY
No. Hurt. But I don't hate you.
JEAN
I would understand it if you did.
That was...
TOMMY
Cruel.
JEAN
Yeah, it was.
TOMMY
Worst night of my life.
JEAN
I can understand how it could be.
TOMMY
Oh, no. I don't think you do, but
that's neither here nor there. So
how are you doing?
JEAN
I'm good.
TOMMY
Still with Brinker?
JEAN
Michael? No. We broke up a few
years ago.
TOMMY
Oh...
JEAN
You can say it. Everyone else has.
TOMMY
Good. I hate that guy.
JEAN
Well, you have every reason to.
TOMMY
Do you miss him?
JEAN
I'm not sure.
TOMMY
How does your man feel?
JEAN
I don't have one.
TOMMY
Oh. Well, was there ever anyone
else?
JEAN
I dated a few guys, one or two, but
nothing serious. What about you?
You said something about only
having one girlfriend?
TOMMY
One girlfriend?
JEAN
Yeah, when you talked to me outside
at the prom.
TOMMY
I never had a girlfriend.
JEAN
Oh. I thought you said something
about it.
TOMMY
No. I mean it was almost ten years
ago so I don't remember every thing
I said but I know I never had a
girlfriend.
Jean ponders.
JEAN
Oh, you said that the woman you
wanted was already with someone.
TOMMY
I probably said something like
that.
JEAN
Yeah, you said that you wouldn't
tell her because she was with
someone and you wouldn't like it if
someone said that to your
girlfriend.
TOMMY
I did say that.
JEAN
So, you still haven't had a
girlfriend?
TOMMY
No, but I've had some lousy dates.
JEAN
That's too bad. You still seem like
a nice guy.
TOMMY
Thank you. This is the fist time
I've seen you here.
JEAN
I moved out of town a few years
ago. I just moved back last week.
My treadmill broke down so I came
here. Are you here all the time?
TOMMY
I like to feed the birds.
JEAN
Oh?
Jean looks down at the bread crumbs, no sign of birds
anywhere. Tommy gently shakes his head in disappointment.
JEAN (cont'd)
Are there usually more than this?
TOMMY
No.
JEAN
Oh...
TOMMY
Yeah, it's a pretty depressing
life.
JEAN
No, I'm not saying anything.
TOMMY
It's okay, I know. Just your lonely
security guard with friends who
like to set him up on horrible
dates with men dressed up like
women.
JEAN
What?
TOMMY
Long... horrible story. But hey,
it's good to see you again.
JEAN
Yeah, same here.
TOMMY
You'll be back here tomorrow?
JEAN
Probably. I doubt I'll be able to
fix the treadmill by tomorrow,
unless you think you could fix it?
TOMMY
Nope, I'm not very good at
electronics.
JEAN
Oh, okay. Well, I guess I'll be
going.
Jean stands up, Tommy gets up as well.
TOMMY
Well, have fun.
JEAN
(playful)
Jogging? Oh, yes, lots of fun.
TOMMY
Maybe, I can join you sometime.
JEAN
Yeah, maybe. Could be fun.
TOMMY
Okay, bye-bye.
JEAN
Bye.
Tommy watches Jean run down the trail. Tommy sighs.
TOMMY
Man.
INT. LANCE'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Lance, Jake and Mark are playing video game on the couch.
Chips and soda cover the coffee table. Tommy picks at the
food on the table.
MARK
Jean?
TOMMY
Yeah.
MARK
Jean Colder?
TOMMY
Yeah.
MARK
From high school?
TOMMY
Yeah.
MARK
Dude!
TOMMY
What?
MARK
After what she did to you at the
prom? Man that was...
JAKE
Cold.
MARK
Yeah.
JAKE
Er.
Jake giggles at his joke.
TOMMY
Well, that was ten years ago and
she was with Brinker then.
MARK
Brinker.
TOMMY
Yeah.
MARK
Michael Brinker.
TOMMY
Are we going to do this again?
MARK
They guy who whooped your ass at
the prom.
TOMMY
I remember that, thanks.
MARK
Did she talk to you about that?
TOMMY
Yeah.
LANCE
What did she say?
TOMMY
Well, she apologized for it. I told
her there were no hard feelings --
LANCE
That's a lie.
TOMMY
No, it's not.
LANCE
No, it is, too. Tommy, for some
reason you loved that chick back in
high school and prom scarred you
for life. She didn't tell Brinker,
"No, you're a jerk," like in the
movies, she left you on the floor
and ran off with him.
TOMMY
Can we stop talking about that
night? Besides it was a sucker
punch.
MARK
Sucker punch or not he laid your
ass out and that bitch ran off with
him.
LANCE
Are you going to see her again?
TOMMY
I might. Maybe tomorrow.
JAKE
What are you going to do tomorrow?
TOMMY
I might jog with her.
The guys laugh at Tommy.
LANCE
The last time you jogged was in
high school.
TOMMY
Well, okay, maybe I shouldn't jog
tomorrow but I'm still going to see
her again.
MARK
Bad idea, man.
TOMMY
How?
MARK
Old feelings are going to come
back.
LANCE
Well, in his case they never went
away. What is it about her anyway,
man? Granted every guy wanted her
in high school but why are you so
fixated on her?
TOMMY
I don't know why. I just am.
JAKE
Did she ever even talk to you in
school?
TOMMY
Three times, in passing.
Mark rubs his face, becoming distraught.
MARK
Oh, Tommy, dude, you're killing me.
TOMMY
How can this be any worse than the
dates you three put me through?
LANCE
There were no emotional
involvements.
MARK
Yeah, the way relationships are
suppose to be.
JAKE
Amen.
MARK
You had no problems going into it.
No expectations, no
disappointments. No guys in
dresses.
Jake looks at Mark.
JAKE
You had to bring that up.
MARK
Every time.
TOMMY
Look, guys, just let me try it my
way for a while, okay? If it
doesn't work out then, it doesn't
work out. But I have to try. I
never had the chance in high school
and now I do.
MARK
Are you sure you want to do this?
TOMMY
Positive.
The guys shake their heads at Tommy.
LANCE
We support you, either way, but
just know that it's not going to
turn out good, man.
TOMMY
Right now I have nothing to loose,
so I have to try.
EXT. PARK - MORNING
Tommy sits on the park bench again. No sign of his birds.
Tommy looks down the jogging trail -- no sign of Jean either.
Tommy checks his clock: 10:00 a.m.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. PARK - LATER
Still stationed at the bench, Tommy waits for Jean. He checks
his watch again: 12:00 p.m. Tommy sighs, defeated.
INT. ACF - SECURITY OFFICE - NIGHT
Tommy sits at his desk, removing the plastic cover off of a
hot TV dinner. Tommy stirs the potatoes around then stops.
Tommy looks at the radio as it plays an old depressing love
song. Tommy looks down at the TV dinner, then to his security
uniform and finally the office itself.
Realization sets in.
TOMMY
Oh, God.
EXT. PARK - MORNING
Once again Tommy is sitting on his park bench. Bread crumbs
are at his feet, no birds around. Tommy sorts though his
mail.
TOMMY
Bill. Bill. Bill.
Tommy comes to the last piece of mail and stops. He studies
it. Tommy opens the envelope and takes out the letter. The
letterhead catches his eye:
HIGH SCHOOL TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
Tommy scans the letter.
TOMMY (cont'd)
Hmmmmmm...
Tommy hears footsteps. JEAN, jogging down the track, sees
Tommy and waves. Tommy quickly pockets the letter. He stands
up to greet her.
TOMMY (cont'd)
Hi, Jean.
Jean jogs over to Tommy.
JEAN
Hey.
TOMMY
How are you doing?
JEAN
Good. Any birds today?
TOMMY
No.
JEAN
Oh.
TOMMY
I was looking for you yesterday.
JEAN
Oh, yeah? I had to work late last
night and I over slept. Sorry.
TOMMY
Oh, that's okay.
Jean looks over Tommy's clothing.
JEAN
I guess you're not jogging today?
TOMMY
Oh, no. Maybe a power walk?
Jean thinks it over.
JEAN
Sure.
Tommy pockets his mail then Jean and Tommy power walk down
the trail. They pass a set of bushes.
IN THE BUSHES,
Lance, Mark and Jake's heads pop up as if conducting a covert
operation.
JAKE
This isn't good.
MARK
No. Come on.
The three take off.
EXT. PARK - MOMENTS LATER
Tommy holds his rib as he walks next to Jean. Tommy is
seriously out of shape.
JEAN
Get anything good in the mail?
TOMMY
Bills and an invite to the
anniversary.
BEHIND SOME TREES,
Jake, Mark and Lance's heads pop out as they listen. They
continue following Tommy through the park, ducking and diving
behind objects.
JEAN continues asking questions.
JEAN
Anniversary?
TOMMY
High school.
JEAN
Really? Wow. When is it?
TOMMY
Next month sometime.
JEAN
Are you going?
TOMMY
Considering what happened last
time? Highly doubtful.
JEAN
Things could be different this
time.
TOMMY
They could be but I really don't
see that happening. Are you going
to go?
JEAN
I don't believe so.
TOMMY
Why not?
JEAN
I don't know. I was just never into
reliving the past or holding onto
it. It's dangerous.
TOMMY
I guess some people just have a
hard time of letting go.
JEAN
Sometimes you have to let go in
order to move forward. You're a
smart guy, Tommy, you should know
that.
TOMMY
I do. It's just easier for some
people than others.
JEAN
Are you one of those people?
TOMMY
Sometimes. You never think about
how things could have been
different?
JEAN
I try not to. I know that I've made
mistakes but I can't spend the rest
of my life regretting them. You
shouldn't either.
TOMMY
I know, make a dark past into a
bright future.
JEAN
Exactly.
TOMMY
And how do you suppose I should go
about that?
JEAN
Are you holding onto the past?
TOMMY
One piece.
JEAN
Is it something that you lost?
TOMMY
Not really. Something I've never
had.
JEAN
Did you ever try to get it in the
past?
TOMMY
Not really. No, I guess I didn't.
JEAN
Well, is there a chance that you
can have it now?
TOMMY
I don't know. I guess the situation
is better now than it was years
ago.
JEAN
If it's bothering you that much
than you should go for it. Give it
one good chance. If you don't get
it then move on and leave it in the
past.
TOMMY
What if I'm scared?
JEAN
Then you're never going to have
what you want.
INT. LANCE'S HOUSE - GARAGE - DAY
The garage door is open to the cluttered garage. Inside
Lance, Jake and Mark are having a meeting. The topic: how to
stop Tommy.
MARK
He's going for it. I know it. We
have to stop him.
LANCE
Mark, if he wants to do it, he's
going to. They're nothing we can do
about it.
JAKE
I don't want him to go out with her
either. All we can hope for is that
she turns him down. It's better
that he gets shot down now, then to
build up his hopes and get
destroyed later.
LANCE
He's probably already built them up
just by seeing her again. He always
does this to himself.
MARK
And this is why we have to stop him
before it gets worse.
LANCE
And your plan is?
MARK
I haven't figured that part out yet
but when I do I'll call you guys.
EXT. LANCE'S HOUSE - GARAGE - THAT MOMENT
Tommy stands next to the garage listening in on the meeting.
Tommy looks down at the graduation letter. Heartbroken Tommy
leaves.
EXT. PARK - THE NEXT DAY
Tommy stands by the park bench anxious. No bread crumbs on
the ground. Tommy's here for something else.
JEAN comes running into Tommy's view. Tommy walks up to her.
JEAN
Hi.
TOMMY
When is your next night off?
JEAN
Tomorrow. Why?
TOMMY
Would you like to go out with me?
JEAN
A date?
TOMMY
Yes.
JEAN
...okay. Sure.
TOMMY
Great. I'll see you then. Take
care, Jean.
JEAN
See you tomorrow.
Tommy starts walking away then stops and turns to Jean.
TOMMY
Uh... where do you live?
INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT
A small candlelit restaurant serves as the setting for an
intimate meal. Tommy and Jean have the dining room to
themselves.
Jean is laid back and relaxed. Tommy is calm for the most
part, however every now and then Tommy starts stumbling over
himself.
JEAN
This is a cute place.
TOMMY
Yeah.
JEAN
How often do you eat here?
TOMMY
Not often. I'm not much for eating
in public.
JEAN
Really?
TOMMY
Yeah. I don't know.... My mother
was that way as well. Perhaps I got
that from her.
JEAN
Your family didn't eat out much?
TOMMY
We did. KFC, McDonalds, stuff like
that. We just didn't eat inside. If
we were on a trip we'd eat in the
car or drive while we ate.
(beat)
I remember we used to stop and get
ice cream from Dairy Queen on the
way to my Grandmother's house. Mom
and Dad would get ice cream cones
and I would get a strawberry
sundae.
JEAN
Ouuu, I loved those. I use to eat
all the strawberry first then I
would eat the rest.
TOMMY
Yeah, I always liked how they had
Dennis the Menace on the cups.
JEAN
Yeah, I miss those.
TOMMY
What about you? Did your family eat
out a lot?
JEAN
Actually we never did. The only
time I would eat out would be when
I had some spare change and I could
go. My family and I were never that
close.
TOMMY
Oh, I didn't know. I'm apologize
for bringing it up.
JEAN
No, it's okay.
TOMMY
You just seemed so ... happy at
school.
JEAN
You seemed so depressed.
TOMMY
I didn't want to be there.
JEAN
Well, being at school gave me a
chance to be away from home. I
preferred that life to the real
one.
TOMMY
I can see how that would feel
better.
JEAN
It was only a band-aid though. I
sill had to go home at night and
eventually your friends' mothers
would stop letting you spend every
night at their house.
TOMMY
Yeah ...
JEAN
At least I kept my grades up.
TOMMY
Nice that someone did.
JEAN
You seemed intelligent when we were
in class together.
TOMMY
I did sit behind you remember?
JEAN
(laughs)
That would explain it I guess.
TOMMY
I'm glad to see you laughing. I'm
sorry for the downer subject.
JEAN
It did lead to something that made
me laugh so I say it was worth it.
TOMMY
Seems like you've developed a
positive outlook on things.
JEAN
Maybe after so much of the bad you
have to start looking for the good?
... I don't know, I'm rambling.
TOMMY
No, it's okay. I like to hear you
talk.
Jean smiles brightly.
TOMMY (cont'd)
It's also refreshing to see that
view point. I guess I'm stuck in
the down cycle and it would be nice
to see the upside for a change.
JEAN
Do you think that you deserve it?
TOMMY
The good or the bad?
JEAN
Either.
TOMMY
I don't know. Sometimes I do,
sometimes I don't.
JEAN
And your friends? What do they
think about it?
TOMMY
My friends? My "friends" are not
very supportive of me at the
moment.
JEAN
Oh, why?
TOMMY
Long story, but they don't agree
with the direction I'm taking my
life in now.
JEAN
Which direction is that?
TOMMY
Remember when you told me I should
try for the one thing I've always
wanted? We'll I'm going for it.
JEAN
That's great!
TOMMY
Not to them. They believe I'm
setting myself up for a huge
mistake, but I have to go for it.
JEAN
When are you going to start?
TOMMY
I already have.
JEAN
Really? And?
TOMMY
... and so far so good, I would
imagine. No major disasters.
JEAN
Well, that's good. Can I ask you
what the goal is?
Uh-oh!
TOMMY
Uh ...
Jean stares at Tommy.
JEAN
Tommy?
TOMMY
Oh, look, dinner.
Jean turns to see there WAITER bringing out their dinners.
The waiter sets the dinner before them.
WAITER
Is there anything else I can get
you?
TOMMY
No, I'm fine. Thank you.
WAITER
Ma'am?
JEAN
No, thank you, this is great.
WAITER
Okay, you two have a lovely dinner.
The waiter walks off. Tommy pokes around his food. Jean
stares at Tommy. Tommy notices and looks up to her.
JEAN
Well?
TOMMY
What?
JEAN
What is the goal?
TOMMY
Oh ...
Tommy thinks.
TOMMY (cont'd)
I don't really like to talk while I
eat, so ...
Jean is a little taken back by this.
JEAN
Oh ... Okay.
Jean starts unwrapping her utensils. Tommy fights the urge to
speak but he can't.
TOMMY
Alright ... Uh ... It's you.
JEAN
Me?
TOMMY
You. I wanted to go out with you. I
wanted to be with you.
JEAN
That's the goal you always wanted?
I'm flattered but why me?
TOMMY
I've always had feelings for you.
Ever since Junior High.
JEAN
I never know that. Why didn't you
ever tell me? I mean you only
talked to me once in school at that
was at the prom.
TOMMY
I know, but I never had the chance
to tell you how I felt. I'm mean
what was I suppose to do? What do
you do when you see someone and
your heart stops? When you don't
know if you should laugh or cry?
Every time I saw you I died because
you were with him and I could never
have you. You were the perfect
couple and who was I? Nobody.
(beat)
I wish that could have just walked
up to you and told you that you
were in my constant thoughts. How
every class we were not in together
I'd wonder what you were doing and
what you were thinking about. If
you were still wearing the same
perfume you had worn yesterday.
If you teased your hair different
or were wearing a different shade
of blush.
(beat)
How are you suppose to tell someone
those things without frighting the
other or thinking that you're
insane? I couldn't do it and to be
honest, I'm not sure how I'm doing
this now. But what I am certain of
is this ... I still feel the same
way.
(beat)
And its not because I saw you
again. It's been a continual theme
in my life. You always come back
into my thoughts. It's just now
you've come back into my life and
this time I'm telling you how I
feel.
(beat)
I expect you to not understand and
I expect you to get up and walk out
but I just want you to know this if
you do. I'll still be thinking of
you when you leave. How many people
can say they were in another's
thoughts for this long without ever
hearing the words, "I love you,"
from the other or even expecting
it?
EXT. LANCE'S HOUSE - MORNING
Mark holds out a trash bag while Lance cleans out the back of
his car. Jake naps on a lawn chair with a newspaper covering
his face.
Lance's picks up several objects, confused at what they are,
so are we, Lance tosses it. Mark looks into the bag.
MARK
What is that?
LANCE
I don't even want to begin to
guess.
Lance looks through the open passenger side door and spots
TOMMY
Heading towards them.
LANCE (cont'd)
Tommy?
MARK
Huh?
Marks gazes finds Tommy.
TOMMY
She said, "Yes."
MARK
"Yes," about what?
TOMMY
To a date with me.
MARK
Damn it, Tommy.
TOMMY
And we had it last night and it was
great. And we're going out again
tonight. And we're also going to
the reunion together. By the way, I
heard your meeting, don't bother
getting involved.
LANCE
We just don't want you to get
screwed over.
TOMMY
I have to go for this, Lance. You
went for the woman you wanted why
can't I? All of you have someone,
hell neither Mark or Jake wanted a
woman but they get them.
MARK
Well, actually Jake --
Mark turns to Jake who is still out cold.
MARK (cont'd)
Aww, that was going to be a good
one, too.
LANCE
Tommy, I see where you're coming
from but Jean --
TOMMY
It doesn't matter, we're going and
it's going to be different this
time, I'll see you three at the
reunion if you go.
Tommy marches off. Lance and Mark shake their heads with
disappointment. Jake pulls down the newspaper and wipes the
sleep from his eyes.
JAKE
What's going on?
MARK
Tommy just royally screwed himself.
JAKE
Well ... what are we going to do?
LANCE
Nothing. Let him learn.
INT. ACF - SECURITY OFFICE - NIGHT
Tommy walks into the office with a little bit of pep in his
step. Tommy should feel proud. Tommy stops when he sees his
supervisor FRANK.
FRANK
Tommy. Good to see you.
TOMMY
Uh ... hi Frank, what's going on?
FRANK
Well, I have some bad news. We're
losing the account here, so we'll
be leaving soon.
TOMMY
What? This is the only security
account this company has in town.
FRANK
I know that, Tommy, but I don't
handle the contracts, the office
does.
Look you're still going to get that
extra paycheck the company holds
back when you start a new position
in case something like this
happens.
TOMMY
When do we lose the account?
FRANK
Your shift is the last one tonight.
TOMMY
(shighs)
Great.
FRANK
Hey, don't worry about it. You're a
good kid, something will turn up
for you.
Frank starts out the small office and pats Tommy on the
shoulder.
FRANK (cont'd)
Just finish your shift like normal,
I'll be back in the morning to
close everything up.
Frank heads out into the street as Tommy heads further into
the small office full of depression.
INT. TOMMY'S APARTMENT - KITCHEN - DAY
Tommy flips through the phone book and makes notes on Tux and
limo rentals, restaurants, etc. Tommy's stomach GROWLS. Tommy
strolls over to the cupboard and opens it. Not much to look
at. A few cans of tuna, some crackers.
Tommy turns back to the phone book then back to the cupboard.
Tommy thinks. He shuts the door to the cupboard and heads
towards the phone.
EXT. JEAN'S HOUSE - EVENING
SUPER: TWO WEEKS LATER. REUNION NIGHT.
A stretch limo pulls up on the small suburban block. The
CHAUFFEUR exits the limo, rounds the vehicle and opens the
door for Tommy.
Tommy is dressed in a fantastic tux, with a corsage in hand.
Tommy also appears to be around ten pounds lighter.
TOMMY
I'll be back in a few minutes,
we're a little early.
CHAUFFEUR
Not a problem, sir.
The Chauffeur closes the door to the limo and stands idly by.
Tommy strides down the side walk. Tommy makes it to the ...
FRONT DOOR,
Tommy rings the door bell. Excitement pours over him like a
fountain. Well, damn it he should be excited, this is your
night, Tommy!
The door swings open. Tommy stares in to the eyes of ...
BRINKER
in all his boxers, wife beater and beer drinking glory. Tommy
is horrified as he watches the washed-up Brinker finish off a
cold one.
BRINKER
What?!
TOMMY
Uh ... I ...
BRINKER
Hey, don't I know you?
IN THE HOUSE,
We can see Jean walk out from the bathroom door, drying her
hair off.
JEAN
Whose at the door, baby?
BRINKER
Some retard who can't speak.
TOMMY
Jean?
BRINKER
Oh, he can say your name, that's
great.
Jean heads to the door. Tommy is in near tears. Brinker
watches on cold heartily.
TOMMY
Jean ... What did you do?
JEAN
I'm sorry, Tommy. He was in town
for the reunion and he found me
online and we though that it ...
This was best.
TOMMY
But --
BRINKER
She said it was for the best, now
GET OUT!
Brinker steals the corsage and SLAMS the door shut on Tommy.
Tommy slowly walks away from the door, down the side walk,
past the awaiting limo and chauffeur and down the street. The
Chauffeur tries to garner Tommy's attention.
CHAUFFEUR
Sir? Sir? Do you want me to keep
waiting for you?
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - NIGHT
Cars are piling up as the reunion is in full effect.
LANCE and the gang, sans Tommy, are all huddled together
watching the cars pull in. Jake is the first to notice the
limo pull up.
JAKE
Well, look at this.
The limo stops in front of the gym. Everyone outside watches
on intensely. The same Chauffeur from Tommy's limo gets out,
rounds the limo and opens the door for Brinker and Jean. The
jocks explode with fanfare as they see their hero.
MARK
I fuckin' knew it!
LANCE
We all did, man.
JAKE
Dude, was destined to get screwed
over man.
ALICE
That's so sad though.
MARK
He did it to himself.
SARA
You can't help who you have
feelings for.
MARK
Either way, he knew better.
LANCE
Come on, let's get inside. This is
sick.
The gang heads inside as Brinker slaps hands and does chest
bumps like he's just scored a touchdown.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - GYM - MOMENTS LATER
The Gym is decorated the exact same way as it was for the
prom ten years ago. Pure nostalgia.
Lance and the gang head to their bleachers and sit down. They
check out the place.
ON THE GYM,
The grouping is the same now as it was ten years prior: Jocks
with jocks, preps with preps, nerds with nerds, etc.
LANCE
Nice to see nothing has changed in
a decade.
A slow song begins to play. Mark stands up and holds out his
hand to Alice. She looks up at him confused.
MARK
I know that it's not your song yet
but I thought you'd like to get an
early start on the dancing.
Alice smiles the biggest smile we've ever seen. She takes
Mark's hand and he leads her to the gym floor and begins to
dance with her.
SARA
You were saying?
JAKE
Holy crap, what a sellout.
CARRIE
What? You dance with me all the
time now.
JAKE
Yeah, but Mark hates it, therefor
he sold out.
LANCE
Well, he loves her, man.
JAKE
I know but still ...
LANCE
Dude, he's made a lot of mistakes
over the years, he's really trying
to make things right with her.
CARRIE
To bad he didn't get dancing lesson
before hand.
Yup it's true, Mark is a horrible dancer. Alice breaks up
laughing and they have to stop dancing for a brief moment for
her to regain her composure. Mark smiles at Alice and holds
out his arms. Alice slides into them as they embrace each
other tightly.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL - GYM - LATER
The Reunion Class in on the floor looking up at the DJ on
stage as he makes an announcement.
DJ
Alright class of ninety-six. It's
now time to crown your Reunion King
and Queen!
The class cheers. The gang doesn't.
CARRIE
Gee, I wonder.
DJ
And your Queen is ...
(opens envelope)
JEAN COLDER!
The students cheer, except the gang. Jean is not shy this
time as she head up the stage and accepts her crown and
scepter.
DJ (cont'd)
And your king ...
LANCE
Que asshole, supreme.
DJ
(opens letter)
MICHAEL BRINKER!
The school erupts for Brinker. Brinker heads up to the stage
and once again, fatty crowns himself.
DJ (cont'd)
Lets hear it for you King and
Queen!
The students cheer. Brinker heads down the stairs in front of
the stage. From nowhere a STEEL CHAIR SMASHES BRINKER IN THE
FACE -- WHHHACCCK! Brinker loses his balance and falls off
the steps.
The shocked student body turns to the side entrance to see a
pissed off Tommy standing in the door way by a stack of
folding chairs.
TOMMY
(points to Brinker)
Fuck you!
(points to Jean)
And you're a bitch!
The Queen begins to cry and Tommy turns and leaves. Several
of the Jocks take off after the exited Tommy. Jake jumps on
one of the jock's back. Mark and Lance soon follow. Punches
begin flying on both sides.
More jocks come into the foray. A pack of nerds at the punch
bowl jump the jocks!
A FAT GUY farts on a Jock, the jock raises his fist then gets
tackled by a GOTH!
CARRIE jumps on a blenched blond former cheerleader ...
CATFIGHT!
A full scale riot ensues for several moments! Chairs fly,
glasses are crushed, food is thrown, hair pulled ...
Midst the chaos Lance and Mark have managed to pull out a
table in front of the stage with Brinker lying on it. Lance
and Mark hold onto both ends of Brinker as Jake is on the
stage and backs up for a running start.
Jake takes off the stage and FLIES. Jake crashes down onto
Brinker sending him through the table! The students who were
not fighting or caught a moment's rest and saw the leap chant
throwing their fist in the air:
STUDENTS
ECW! ECW! ECW!

EXT. PARK - MORNING
Tommy sits alone on the park bench. He spreads bread crumbs
along the ground. Tommy stares for long beat. Nothing
happens. Tommy closes his eyes and sighs.
Tommy opens his sad eyes and sees a bird next to his feet.
The bird walks around and starts eating the bread crumbs.
Tommy smiles.
FADE TO BLACK.
