- This is a story about a girl from Alabama, Melanie Smoother ( Reese Witherspoon ) who fled her hometown in search for a new life. She heads off to New York and later becomes a top fashion designer. Engaged to the son of the Mayor of New York. Her life is going perfect except for one thing her ex husband in Alabama hasn't signed their divorce papers yet. So she heads of to Alabama to fix her past.
