My
name is Paul Mahlan. In June 2000, a diving accident damaged my
spinal cord, leaving me with no feeling or
movement from my mid-chest down. I can't use my hands, so I can't
use chopsticks or flick anyone off anymore. However, I wear
assistive splints on my hands which help me operate my power chair
and pick my nose. I live in Oak Park, Illinois - just
outside of Chicago - with my father and my dog, Mokey.
This web site began as a
way to keep friends and family informed just after my accident. I
hope it continues to keep everyone informed, provide assistance to
families who are experiencing the same sort of thing, and make
everyone laugh.
Without "going-Oprah" on
anyone, I also hope it can remind us how important our health is
and how little most of our problems are. Before my accident I was
like everyone else, running, jumping, climbing, dancing like a
white guy at weddings, etc.
I never thought too much about my
health. My life continued to get better every year and I was
having a blast with my friends and family. You never know when
something will happen to you that changes your life.
I wish
everyone the best and can't thank you enough for all of your
support and love. I may not respond to all of your letters and
e-mails (though I'll try), but know that I'll use them as
inspiration to get well and on bad days when I don't want to do
anything. Enjoy the pictures and feel free to sign the message
board and I will try to keep this site updated!
