2002 Pictures
This is how the Finleyville and Abbey Brook railroad looked in it's first summer.  It was a very long, hot and dry summer.  We were very lucky that most of the new plants survived.  The fish in the pond did reasonably well.  We started with 6 goldfish and had 4 going into the winter.
Shay passes Finleyville station
Small freight train pases the farm
Edge of the new pond is visible.  The pond has added alot of enjoyment to the garden
Early picture with Shay.  040 Switcher was in the shop
Passenger train rumbles through the wooded area
rail fans spend their time in the gazebo watching the train pass every 70 seconds or so
This is the view from the backyard.  The Dwarf Alberta Spruces had a tough winter here in Western Pennsylvania but all survived, except for one
Train passes the gazebo and enters tunnel.  In 2003, the farm was moved to this area and the gazebo was moved back towards mountain.  Ballast is 1/4" limestone dust.  This has worked out great.  I highly recommend it.
The pond and waterfall.  The pond is a 100 gallon pre-form 18 inches deep.  Surprisingly, all fish survived the winter with a solid sheet of ice for many months.  This was a lot of fun to build.
This is a view of the entire garden.  The stairs posed a problem with excesive dripping during rain.  It would dig deep holes in the soil and track ballast.  I had to move the farm buildings and lay alot of rocks here in 2003.  I also added two bridges and a dry creek bed for drainage.  Just like real railroads.
Good shot of the garden from the back of my yard.  I built the wall out of blocks from the local home improvement store and filled with about 13 tons of dirt and limestone gravel.  This settled over the winter of 2001-2002.
The pond and waterfall from above.  The tunnel was made from a large discarded PVC pipe I got from my brother who works for the water company.  He cut it in half and it made a great tunnel form.  My brother David was a great help during the initial construction.
