So what do you need in your computer to install Linux?

Basic Specifications:

In order for Linux to work correctly on your PC it requires drivers for each piece of hardware in your system. A driver acts as a translator. It allows your hardware and software to communicate with each other. Altough there are Linux drivers for most types of hardware there are a few exceptions, so its important that you check out your computer specs before you begin installing Linux.

To install a basic version of Linux, you don't need a whole lot. There are even some versions that you can run from a floppy disk! To get some benefit from your system you'll need at least the following:

You'll find this type of specification on most computers sold in the last few years. Its really quite basic, but one of the benefits of Linux is that it does not require an expensive PC to work on.

I have installed Linux on a system with the following specifications:

and it runs quite well!

A Word About Modems:

Many internal modems that are sold with PC's are a special type of modem called a "Winmodem". Normally a modem uses built-in hardware to convert electrical signals (digital) to a signal that can be sent down a telephone wire (analog). Winmodems do this type of conversion using software. Unfortunately, this software will work under the Microsoft Windows operating system, hence the term Win-modem.

These types of modems will not work under Linux. If you want to check if you have a Winmodem, look at the manuals that came with your system. Or, if you are currently running Windows, you can check Device Manager. Under Modems, a Winmodem will be designated by a "HCF" or "HSF" code before the modem type.

If you are still unsure, you can check www.linmodems.org (this link opens a new page) which maintains a list of all currently supported modem types.

What You Need to Know Before You Start

Before you start installing Linux it is a good idea to get all the manuals that came with your system, and take note of exactly what hardware you have in your system.
