Scene Seven

 

 

Molly's stateroom. ANNIE MAY is on the sofa with a deck of cards. MOLLY is studying the huge map DUVAL left. MOLLY "You will recognize the pilot by the jade medallion he will wear about his neck. You will then take a junk up the coast…"

ANNIE MAY

I don' likes it, Miz Molly. I don' likes it at all.

MOLLY

What don't you likes?

ANNIE MAY

I see trouble with a capital T.

MOLLY

What's he look like?

ANNIE MAY

Da King o' Pentacles. Big, tall, blond---and he got a schwanz on him! Trouble, Miz Molly.

MOLLY

That much, huh?

ANNIE MAY

I don' likes it.

MOLLY

I always knew there was something peculiar about you.

ANNIE MAY

I means da udder cards, Miz Molly. Da black deuce an' da nine o' spades---and dis here ace. Danger, Miz Molly. A-number one danger.

                                                                   (MOLLY gets up and glances over Annie May's shoulder.)
 

MOLLY

You're serious.

ANNIE MAY

I'se never been wrong about da cards befo', Miz Molly. (MOLLY glances cautiously about the room, marches to the map, sweeps it up in her arms and brings it back to Annie May. SHE tears off a large piece and hands it to her maid.) ANNIE MAY What's this, Miz Molly?

MOLLY

Lunch. (SHE places a large wad in her mouth and munches. ANNIE MAY does the same.) MOLLY A little soy sauce would help. (THEY continue to chew. A knock on the door. MOLLY grabs the rest of the map and disappears into the bathroom. ANNIE MAY opens the door. SAM stands there.) SAM You Mandalay Molly?

ANNIE MAY

Me? (SHE bursts into a guffaw, then catches herself and laughs in her tinkly Oriental manner.) No. Me, Missy Annie May Wong. I am mistress for Mandarray Molly.

SAM

You kinda cute.
                                                                               (From the bathroom we hear the toilet flush.)
My bossman, he come for Mandalay Molly. (JOHNNY swaggers into the room just as MOLLY comes out of the bathroom minus the map.) ANNIE MAY Da King o' Hearts! (Lights dim and two spots fall---one on Johnny, the other on Molly. A sting of music. THEY stare at each other sensually.) JOHNNY Miss Mandalay Molly?

MOLLY

Yes?

JOHNNY

Johnny Glissando, ma'am. Samoan Sam here and me, we come to take you to the sea plane.

MOLLY

I'm all yours, Mr. Glissando.

                                                                            (Lights come up again as JOHNNY and SAM exit.)
 

ANNIE MAY

Da King o' Hearts! Be careful, Miz Molly.

MOLLY

Don't worry, Annie May. I never met a schwanz I couldn't handle.
