Hi, welcome to my McLean family tree web site. Most of the information contained on this site was first given to me by my grandparents Neil and Renee McLean who lived in the Isle of Man. My grandparents had a visit during July 1984 from Charles and Mary-Jane McLean, who wished to add to the information they had gained about the American branch of the family. Much (in fact almost all at present) of the information which is displayed on this web site comes directly from all the work done by Charles and Mary-Jane after searching the Registry Office and Museum in Douglas IOM as well as speaking to my Grandparents and Great Uncles and Aunties from the Isle of Man – Peter & Eileen and John & Margret.

Oral history passed down through the generations indicates that the first member in this first family tree, William McLean, emigrated to IOM from Carrick Fergus or Hillsborough, Northern Ireland. This emigration was prompted by the Irish troubles around 130 –150 years ago. It is possible that a McCLean ancestor emigrated to Northern Ireland from Scotland or the Isle of Mull at a point in time when Protestants were being imported to Ireland to increase the number of proportion of Protestants to Catholics. However, this seems to be in conflict with information about Clan McLean indicating they were predominately Catholic.

There are 2 ways to access the information on this web site by clicking on one of the two links at the bottom of the page.

The first link will take you to a full family tree, however this is quite big and unfortunately there isn’t enough room to have all the information about each person on this page. There are full names and also dates of birth of the first sibling only of each ‘branch’ where available, and at the top of the page you will see various links (generation1, generation 2, etc) and by clicking on these links and scrolling to the relevant section you will find all the information we have.

The second link will take you first to William McLean (born around 1820) with full details of birth, death, marriage where available. If you click on the descendants link, you will then be taken to his children and their details and a link to go to their children and so on.

Information obtained from records is identified by the letter or town name followed by a number and contained in parentheses. This parenthetical information refers to book and page number in which the actual records can be found in the Registry Office Douglas, IOM

This is a very new web site and at present the family tree is identical to the 1984 version compiled by Charles and Mary-Jane, however shortly I hope to update it and also add further information from census information that is now available, and also add photo’s and a little more information about the lives of the present day Clan McLean members. I’ve got to say thank you (on fear of death – joke!! honest!!) to Caroline Little with her help making this web site. I have never made a web page before and without her help I wouldn’t have known where to start (and I’m too lazy!). If you can provide any further information or recognise yourself on any of the pages please contact me on [email protected].

Many Thanks

Paul McLean
