A blonde goes into a Best Buy. She asks a clerk if she can buy the TV in the corner. The clerk looks at her and says that he doesnt serve blondes, so she goes back home and dyes her hair black. The next day she returns to the store and asks the same thing and again the clerk says he does not serve blondes. Frustrated, the blonde goes home and dyes her hair yet again, to a shade of red. Sure that a clerk would sell her the TV this time, she returns and asks a different clerk for help. To her astonishment, this clerk also says he doesnt serve blondes. The blonde asks the clerk, How do you know I am a blonde? The clerk looks at her disgustingly and says, Thats not a TV - its a microwave.
Why is it that we never hear about how smart a blonde is, or even something that is not relatively degrading? Being a blonde is not as easy as it looks. With it comes many responsibilities and methods of not letting what other people say get to your head. Not taking things close to heart is not always as easy as it looks. Being a blonde is definitely not the same thing as being a red head or brunette. Though it is only a hair color, it is made up to be much more than that with all of the assumptions, connotations, and jokes that come along with being a blonde.
How could the color of ones hair affect the way they are perceived? Could it truly be that we live in a society where the mere glance at ones hair poses the assumption that they are clueless airheads?
The English word blonde comes from the Latin word blondus meaning yellow. The dictionary may define the word as a person of very fair complexion, with light hair and light blue eyes, but is that in fact an accurate definition? Would a person who colors their hair blonde, still then be considered a blonde by definition? Would someone with darker eyes but natural blonde hair still be considered a blonde? Most importantly, would a man be considered a blonde? Sure a man may have light colored, blonde hair, but no one associates the male with any near degrading connotations of being dumb, ditsy, and spacey.
There are many degrees of blonde, a beach blonde, a fake blonde, a dirty blonde, or even a dumb blonde. Whatever your degree of blonde whether it is fake or natural, beach blonde, dark blonde, or dirty blonde the same connotations come along with it, unless of course if you are a male. So what do people really wonder about the blonde being?
Some may perceive a blonde as a woman who is a clueless airhead who has no sense of anything that is going on around her and is completely oblivious to anything except herself. Others find themselves wondering do blondes really have more power than a woman of other hair color does? Do blondes actually have more fun? Do men prefer blondes over brunettes? Can blondes really get away with more? Are dark haired women more respected?
As a matter of fact blondes are neither brainless nor slow nor spacey and naive. They do not party more than any other woman or have more fun either. Truth be told, blondes are simply like any other woman, except with a lighter hair color.
Men who are blonde are in now way affected by this revolutionary idea of blondes being dumb and ditsy. They are not judged by their hair color, whether it is dark, light, or gray. When someone sees a man with blonde hair they do not think that he is unintelligent. The bare thought to judge a man by his hair color seems bizarre in such an advanced and intellectual world. Why then does this happen to a blonde?
How exactly did the blonde woman obtain this reputation? Did she do something to encourage the constant bullying? When in fact did the world decide to stop being equal and press down not only on blondes, but blonde women?
Blondes have been degraded for so long that the word blonde has in effect absorbed a new meaning. Blonde not only refers to a light complexioned person with yellowish hair but it also means clueless, stupid, and ditsy. The insults Youre such a blonde and Duh, what a blonde! are not quite commonly used when referring to people of all hair colors.
Throughout history, many figured have been blonde including the original Barbie doll and Marilyn Monroe. Up until World War II, a woman who dyed her hair blonde was considered fast. Hollywood depicted the blonde as dumb, naughty, and immoral. With time, more women began coloring their hair, which in return made it more acceptable to be a bottle blonde, but the stereotype still stuck around. Cher, the infamous brunette, who has had the best of both worlds, is now still wearing her hair blonde making a statement to the world.
Blondes alone makeup a micro world filled with media moguls, which include film stars, musicians and models. In the advertising world, blondes sell more merchandise in TV commercials and are employed in more commercial print. Musicians such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are prime examples of blondes that are looked up to daily. Movies are being made about how influential a blonde can really be. In the movie Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon plays Elle Wood, who is a young girl about to begin the toughest fight of her life - for love, honor, and respect for blondes everywhere. She is portrayed as the typical ditsy and fun loving blonde who laughs when she does not know the answer to a question, but breaks though the stupidity stereotype by attending Harvard Law School. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, also blonde, have proven how powerful a blonde could truly be by becoming the worlds youngest child entrepreneurs and millionaires. Blondes define the world of media and are getting ahead quicker then ever expected.
Blondes are gaining more power daily and proving to be the opposite of what people think of them. Today, figures that many around the world look up to are no other than blonde! Could is be that blondes are beginning to take over the world, who knows? Maybe one day the world will be run by no other than a blonde woman! As the Clairol slogan goes, If Ive one life, let me live it as a blonde. From movies and music to political figures such as Hillary Clinton, we encounter the almighty blonde. Blondes have been around for ages and are here to stay for good.
