Capcom, 1986

Terrorists are stupid people. They've only gone and taken Super Joe's family hostage, along with a large number of their fellow townsfolk.

Of course, they made the mistake of leaving Super Joe behind, and wouldn't you know it? He's Super Hard, and now he's out for revenge, and to rescue all of the hostages.
The game begins by showing you just what happened to Super Joe's pals. You are shown the terrorists getting out of their cars in the village. Apparently they arrived right in the middle of a town meeting, because they leave the building taking Super Joe's family and all of the townspeople from that one venue!

Have these people never watched the A-Team? You'd think they'd know better than to all congregate in the same place when there are terrorists on the loose!
Super Joe sets out on his mission with a pretty nifty set of wheels. Not only is his car armour plated, but it has weapons too, and is capable of firing projectiles at anything that gets in the way.

Mind you, that armour plating won't last forever. Once the car has taken a few hits, it will catch fire. Super Joe only has a couple of seconds to jump clear, or else he'll be toasted like a marshmallow. Damage to your car is indicated by a bar at the top of the screen. Once it's down to the red, be careful, because you haven't got long left!
Luckily, the rescued hostages are grateful people. So grateful, in fact, that they offer 'rewards' for their rescue, in the form of repairs to your vehicle, increased speed or fire power, or simply some points. Just bust them out of their prisons and 'pick them up' (read: run them over), and the spoils are yours,

Should the worst come to the worst, and you have to abandon your car, well, it's not all bad. Joe can still fire at the enemies whilst on foot, and he's a pretty athletic type, so he can pull off a pretty nifty somersault to help him to evade enemy fire.
If you should progress far enough on foot, and just hang on as best you can, an ally will bring you replacement vehicles for the one that you carelessly blew up, to help you further on your quest. Don't spend too long on foot though, these terrorists are pretty nasty, and Joe only has four minutes per area, or else it's "Game Over, baby". Besides, the quicker you reach the end of an area, the more bonus points you get.

It's a tall order, but nobody else is going to save Joe's family or the townspeople, so bad guys beware, here comes Super Joe, the Speed Rumbler!
