"Wonder Boys" is a dark tale of a day in the life of an eccentric professor. Michael Douglas plays the professor, named Grady Tripp. Grady's first, and very successful, novel came out seven years ago. Since then he's had writer's block. His current novel is over 2600 pages long and still isn't done yet.
Adding to the professor's life are his students. Tobey Maguire plays James Leer, a very eccentric yet talented writer. Katie Holmes plays Hannah Green, a young writer who is attracted to the much older Grady. But Grady's life is even more complicated because he is having an extramarital affair with Sara Gaskell (played by Frances McDormand), the chancellor of the university.
The movie is Michael Douglas' best in years. The cast is also excellent. But the story gets a little confusing at points. Also, the movie just doesn't measure up to last year's "American Beauty" or "Magnolia." It's still a pretty good movie though.
Rated R for language and drug content. 112 minutes.
