Textbook & Materials:
1. “Office 2000 Essentials Course”
Off to Work Series, by Brian Favro, Russel Stolins, Labyrinth Publications.
(739 Pages, Spiral Bound, and Student Exercise Disk)
2. Ten 3.5” High-Density diskettes for student
and homework files.
Course Objectives: Keyboarding—Learn basic touch typing-skills and the function of each key on the keyboard. You will learn to type 40 words per minute.
Computer Hardware—You will learn the basics of
using the mouse, keyboard navigation, and the basic storage and peripheral
components of the computer.
Windows 95/98—You will be taught files management,
working with file folders, using Windows Explorer software, changing Windows,
adjusting settings and controls, and how to customize your computer.
Word 97/2000— Word Processing—You will learn to create, edit and save documents. You will learn to use spell check, thesaurus, tables, columns, desktop publishing, graphics, email, copy and paste. You will learn to create envelopes, labels, change fonts, do paragraph formatting.
Excel 97/2000— Spread Sheet—You will learn to construct a spreadsheet, calculate using formulas, do page setup, printing, and make charts.
Grading: Homework (On time completion of take
home exams and homework exercises
is required.)
Quizzes: Do the homework assignments and you
should do well on each test. (60% is passing.)
Tests: (You must pass each test to pass the course,
60% is the minimum passing grade for each quiz or examination. (You need
to do better to get a good job.) Contact your instructor to arrange a make
up exam. There will be five tests, one each week
Attendance: Late arriving students will have
to catch up to the class lesson on their own. The instructor will not repeat
the class lesson for late arrivals. If you arrive late to class settle
in quietly and turn on your computer. You can make explanations to your
instructor during break time. If you are absent three or more days,
you most likely will fail the class.
Requirements:
You will be provided with all necessary supplies
and books and must comply with the student contract, which you will read,
and sign.
Homework: Reading and practice exercises as assigned by your instructor. You may use computers at Career Keys. Your instructor, Paul Colgrove, teaches other classes at Career Keys and will allow you to use any available computers in his classrooms, not being used by his students.
1. All homework must be turned in on time.
2. Your name should be at the top left of each
page.
3. Press the Tab key twice and type the date.
4. The title Cybernet Computer Applications Homework
should appear below your name.
5. The chapter and name of the homework exercise
should be typed next.
6. Page numbers should be inserted at the bottom
right of each page.
7. Use headers and footers when you are able
to do so.
Reading Textbook: Office 2000 Quick Course
Homework: Hands-On Lessons, Skill Builders &
Assessments
There are 25 Lessons in our textbook. We have
5 weeks or 25 days to complete the book. Our objective is complete more
than one lesson each day. Your instructor, Ms. Coleman will provide supplemental
handouts, projects and tests whenever necessary. It is important that you
read at least one or two lesson each day. Within each lesson are Hands-On
Exercises and at the end of each lesson are additional Skill Builders and
Assessments that you should complete.Each day for at least 30 minutes to
one hour, you must practice keyboarding using the Mavis Beacon keyboarding
lessons installed on your computer.
1. Type your name at the top of each page.
2. In each Lesson complete all Hands-On Exercises.
3. At the end of each lesson, complete the True/False
and Multiple Choice Questions.
4. Then do the Skill Builders, and Assessments
at the end of each lesson.
5. Save your work on your floppy A disk.
6. Submit your work on a floppy disk, or
print if necessary. Print your name on the disk.
