  • Paul's graduation from Basic Training in Ft. Knox, Kentucky.
    Sunday, February 11, 2001
  • Paul left Maui for Frankfurt, Germany on a military flight from Atlanta, Georgia. He mentioned they first flew up to Newfoundland and caught the tradewinds down to Europe. It was a smooth ride but soooo long!

  • Paul phoned from Germany; his comments included how beautiful the area is with rolling hills, lots of trees and a quaint little town; his first impression of Friedberg is very positive. We will be assigned to a 2-bedroom apartment. The housing communities are actually not located on the base; there are small villages outside the area.
  • If you want to see the link for Friedberg and the base Paul is stationed at, I encourage you to visit there as well.
  • Paul's job will keep him off the front lines; he will be in the rear of the line, in the communications tent. His Sgt. Major was a Calvary Scout for 27 years and went to the same base for Basic Training, in Ft. Knox, Kentucky - what are the odds? It has been said that it will take 93 days for our household items to arrive from Maui.

  • Paul has received word that we have our apartment now. He went to view it today and relayed to me that it is HUGE, with so much extra storage that we won't know what to do with it all. The kitchen is quite large with plenty of space in the cabinets. There is ample space for our dining table despite the fact that there is no dining room - it can share space with the living room. The floors in the living spaces are all hardwood and the both the kitchen and bathroom have beige tile floors.
  • We will be located in Bad Nauheim, just a short drive from the base, the commissary and several other key spots. Bad Nauheim and Friedberg are about 15 minutes apart (by car) and Frankfurt is about 40 minutes from our home in Bad Nauheim.

  • While I was sound asleep some burglar(s) broke into our home in Maui and stole my purse and my bathrobe. I feel very fortunate that I did not wake up while the incident was taking place. A police officer dusted for prints but none were found. He told me that the burglar was most likely looking for money for drugs. He probably took my robe to carry things in - it was later found in the road just a short distance from our house. I've now had to replace my Driver's License, Military ID, Costco card, debit & credit cards and various others.

  • Julie leaves Maui on a plane headed for Orlando, Florida.
  • I am able to visit Jenny, Michael and my little neice Piper Nicole. Since Jenny and Michael both work for Disney, I am able to see the theme parks as well as a day trip to the beaches in Cape Canaveral. Jenny treated me to a show of Cirque de Soliel's "La Nouba" - awesome! I had a wonderful time but it went by very quickly

  • Julie leaves for Germany...

    Wednesday, May 22 2001
  • Julie arrives in Frankfurt, Germany for a happy reunion with Paul. It was soooo good to see eachother after +3 months apart. Paul greeted me with a lovely flower arrangement and he arranged for a limo drive from the airport to a nice hotel in the city. We spent the following day touring the city of Frankfurt and then headed to our new home in Bad Nauheim with a great rental car - a lovely, sleek Audi.
  • Bad Nauheim is a beautiful little town. Check out this following page for information about the town.
  • Paul had our apartment decorated and set up with all the essentials: furniture, linens, cookware, dishes, toaster, silverware and knives, coffee-maker, microwave, a refrigerator full of food and so much more. It was so nice to come home to a place that had definitely been fixed up! He put so much thought into setting up the house that I really didn't need a thing!
  • Our household items won't be here till the end of August, so we'll live comfortably with what we have here until the shipment arrives.

    June 2001
  • Eddie (Julie's brother) and Mindi are the proud parents of their first little family addition: Grant Edward, born June 7.
  • Julie is job-hunting...
  • We purchased a little car from a Major who was moving back to the U.S. - for $300 we got a decent vehicle to run back and forth to work.
  • Paul and I visit a few Rennaissance Festivals in the area and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Germany in the summertime is just breathtaking.

  • Paul and I drove to Landstuhl, Germany to pick out a beautiful Golden Retriever puppy, 8 weeks of age. He was the sweetest, most affectionate puppy of all the 6 males; he was also the BIGGEST in the litter. After a few days we came up with a unique name for him: it's the German word for train or pull. His name is Zug, pronounced like "tsook" and some people mistake his name for "Duke" which it does sound similar to. He learned his name easily since it's just one syllable and he comes running to us when we call him. He's a wonderful little pup and we're so fortunate to have him in our family.
  • When we got Zug we didn't realize he was sick and it turned out that he had the Parvo Virus. He spent 8 days at a German Veterinary Hostpital and now he's doing well and in excellent health.

  • Paul left for the field - he will be in Hohenfels, Germany for training. He will be away until August 23. It's lonely here without him despite Zug being here with me to keep me busy. We miss him very much and he also can't wait to come home. Fortunately we talk to him often on his mobile phone.

  • Julie's first day of work! I finally landed a job, and a great one at that. It's not at all in my "normal" field but I'm learning something new now. I work for Community Bank as a Customer Service Representative in Friedberg (on Post where Paul is stationed). The job entails opening and closing accounts, balance inquiries, ordering ATM cards, minor loans, CD's and more. These Community Bank branches are run under contract with Bank of America but owned by the Department of Defense. I have the benefits of the German Labor System, which allows me 6 weeks paid vacation per year, all German holidays off, bonuses twice a year, paid schooling (related to my field - I will sign up for German language classes next year) and tax-free pay -- only Social Security is taken out. My hours are Monday - Friday 11am - 3pm.
  • This first week of work was just to get my feet wet. I leave for training this coming weekend...

    Sunday, July 29 2001
  • Julie leaves for Bad Kissingen, Germany for 2 weeks of Bank Training Courses. Our puppy, Zug is able to come with me to the hotel: Germans love dogs and he is made to feel quite welcome here.

    Monday, July 30 2001
  • Training starts first thing in the morning and all this new material is quite overwhelming at first. However all is well and Zug and I are doing great.

    Friday, August 10 2001
  • I've graduated from CSR Training (Customer Service Representative Course) and the pup and I are on our way home again!
