Shetland Islands

Spent a long weekend up in the Shetland Islands, whilst my parents were there for 2 weeks, in June 2003. Stayed in self catering chalets overlooking Scalloway, the view over Scalloway is below. The Shetland Islands are 100 miles north of the top of Scotland and are mostly windswept peatland.

We saw puffins on 3 occassions, at Sumburgh Head at the southern tip of the main island by the airport, on the Isle of Noss and on Unst at the Hermaness Nature Preserve

Looking to the top of the Isle of Noss, with a large Gannetry on the cliffs below. The Gannetries on Noss and Hermaness really were the highlights of the trip, seeing tens of thousands of birds nesting on the cliffs. Puffins would be waddling around the cliff edges, and Giant Skua birds would nest inland, attacking you by dive bombing you if you got too close to their nest.
