Lugano On the Southern side of the Alps, Lugano is just across the water from Italy. Nice and warm, I headed down here after a cold front appeared over the Alps. The nice waterfront is full of ferries taking you across the lake.
A funicular takes you to the top of Mt Bre, giving good views back.
Walking on from the funicular station, following the curves of the mountain, you eventually reach an old refuge, Apla Bolla. In peak summertime, this would be packed out. Alas when I arrived, the area still covered in cloud, it was almost deserted, the old man keeping warm by a wood fire inside. Good meal though, a doorstep of bread with cheese, red wine and coffee.
