Big SurFor 90 miles between Monteray / Carmel and Hearst Castle, Hwy 1 - the Pacific Coast Highway, twists and turns as it navigates hills that drop straight into the ocean Driving north from Hearst Castle, Ragged Point is the first stop, showing the barren and wild mountains.
Willow Creek is the first 'beach' you get to, the 'sand' are very small stones.
Jade Cove is on a lowland area forming a buffer between the mountains and the sea, creating a pleasant area for a walk. The climb down to the cove is steep, and the cove itself is overrun by kelp and seaweed.
Further on, past Big Sur centre, it becomes less barren and you get more rolling hills. Below shows the landscape stretching out to Point Sur where a lighthouse is stationed.
Before Big Sur finally runs out and Carmel starts there are a few gorgeous beaches, beautiful sands, with no one around for miles.
