California Missions provide a wonderful sanctuary from the modernality of the West Coast. By Oceanside, San Luis Rey, the King of the Missions, provides a grand setting, with luscious gardens and courtyards inside.
On blistering hot summer days, they are a great escape, chances to cool down
under the verandas and inside their museums.

Further up the coast, past Camp Pendleton, is Mission San Juan Capistrano.
A less formal mission, extensively destroyed by various earthquakes,
nevertheless has a beautiful set of cloisters.
