BULL RACES (Karapan Sapi) The island of Madura is wellknown for the rare sport of bull racing. The sport consists of a jockey (usually a young boy) that rides a team of bulls down a straight dirt track, 120 meters long. Jockeys and their teams are paired against each other in single elimination tournaments. The jockey is suspended on a stick that drags along the ground right behind the bulls. He holds on to the bull's tails for balance and even twists their tails to make them run faster. The races are held throughout Madura during August, September and October. (Madura is just across the channel from Surabaya, East Java. In fact, it's only about 30 minutes by ferry.)
Without much doubt the best action photograph I ever took was at the Karapan Sapi in Madura in 1988. A span of bulls ran offtrack into the public, heading straight for me myself. I focused and kneeled down to take the shot at the exact right moment, size and exposure, allowing the proverbial split second to dive out of their way. This shot was on one of the eight films I took on Java and had developed in Yogyakarta....where it appeared (to the developer) that these 8 films had not been exposed. Wow, what a waste! BLO
