We arrived at Surabaya Airport just after dusk, took a long Rp 20,500 (about US$ 3) taxi ride to Hotel Hasmajaya , where we took two rooms for Rp 50,000 each. I had stayed here before in 1988, and although it had improved some, it was a bit of a come-down after being spoiled in the Royal Bali Beach Club. Since Paul worried about towels, soap and security, I consented to entrust him with the task to guard his possessions. |

I took a quick scroll through lively Charak
but got caught in a torrid downpour just when I had ordered a portion of sateh, so I sat it out in a noisy Karaoke Bar decently away from two indolent "kupa2malam", ("night butterflies"). As soon as the rain mellowed down, I took to the streets, or rivers, again and made my way back to the hotel. I stopped at another outdoor "restaurant" for a tasty bowl of soup with meatballs and my first ever warm squeezed "jeruk" - juice (o.j) |
