The below extracted from personal papers of my grandmother:
William Tilton & his family emigrated from England to Lynn, Mass during or before 1643. Descendents lived chiefly in New England. William Tilton 1589-1653 emigrated from England to Mass before 1643 with his second wife, Susannah. Eight generations of Tiltons are traced through his son Abraham 1638-1728. Charles Henry Tilton 1838-1909, son of Daniel Tilton and Sarah Drew, left his home in Lynn Mass in 1854 for the gold fields of Victoria, Australia. In March 1865, Charles married sophia Nichols in the church of England, Beechworth, Victoria. This couple are the ancestors of the Australian Tiltons.
William was a highly educated man, as were his older sons, John and Peter. His oldest son John, after marrying in Lynn moved to what was known as Graves End, Long Island, now Brooklyn, somewhere around 1650, and the records he kept of the early settlement of Graves End are said to be extremely fine as far as handwriting and scholarship is concerned. We are not sure about the date of his William's, wife's death. After his death in 1653 she married Roger Shaw at Cambridge, Mass, and who was a man in some ways connected with the home government and they would move to Hampton and Settle there. After her death, Daniel, the youngest son was cared for by his oldest brother Samuel until he became of age. His history is a very interesting one.
Concerning John Tilton: Hist. of the Tilton Family in America, by F. T. Tilton, page 7, states that:
"William Tilton seems to have been older than John.........by some claimed that John was a son, but it seems more probable that he was a brother. There is, however, little doubt that they were closely related."
