Chicago Blackhawks
This page will also be updated soom -- I hope!
Pattie's favorite NHL player was CHRIS CHELIOS, former captain
of the Chicago Blackhawks. Cheli was also the captain of the Western Conference
team in the 1997 NHL All-Star Game. And, of course, the Hawks have the
coolest and classiest logo in the NHL. The Hawks had a dismal season in 1997-1998, beginning and ending the season with seven-game winless streaks.
The Hawks' final season record was 30-39-13, in ninth place in the Western Conference. It was the first time the Hawks missed the playoffs in 29 years. Coach Craig Hartsburg for the ax in April. Former Blackhawk captain Dirk Graham was named the new head coach on June 29. His assistants will be Denis Savard (another former Blackhawk) and Lorne Molleken, former head coach of the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.
Some major changes were needed in the Windy City if the Blackhawks hope to avoid last season's dismal performance.
GM Bob Murray inked D Paul Coffey to a two-year contract to shore up the power play; however, due to his injuries, he has seen very limited ice time. As expected, the Hawks lost D Gary Suter to free agency.
However, the Hawks unexpectedly passed up on Brett Hull (which is okay by me) and signed C Doug Gilmour (from New Jersey) and C Mark Janssens (from Anaheim) and six propsects. Sporadic performers Dmitri Nabakov and Sergei Krivokrasov have also been traded away.
Eric Daze held out for more $$$ but finally signed. At one point we had FOUR goalies, until Chris Terrerri was traded for a conditional draft pick.
The Hawks began the season a very respectable 4-2-1, a far cry from the 0-7-0 debacle of last season, then fell into a dreadful slump, causing several shake-up trades, including a major trade with Montreal.
