I like to look at pictures of old pieces in books and find some element that I would like to expand into a design. This plate started out from a flower that was painted on the back of a sled, in the 1800s, by the Norwegian painter, Nikuls Buine in Fyresdal, Norway. This is shown on page 197 of the book Norsk Rosemaling by Nils Ellingsgard.

If you are interested in rosemaling and you do not have this book, buy it. The pictures are fantastic; well worth the price of the book.

This is a little different composition since so many of the traditional Telemark pieces are based on scrolls. In this design the main focus of the design is the center flower.

This was also an experiment. I used Transparent White - a fun color to play with.
