Guss Scott, who is Guss Scott? He is the Pats forgotten draft pick well after 9 o’clock Saturday night. After all the flash and dash. After all the papers had gone to print. After all the GMs and Coaches had given their quotes, a lonely Safety from Florida was taken. So who is Guss Scott, the Pats forgotten Draft pick? He is an amazing athlete first and foremost. As a senior he was a RB who rushed for 2000 yards and 22 TDs. Oh yeah, he also averaged over 12 yards a carry! He came to Florida as a true freshman and was their starting Nickel Back, (2 passes deflected, 2 sacks and 42 tackles). He started 3 games as a sophomore and showed marked improvement. One thing about Scott, he seems to be constantly improving himself (3 passes deflected, 3.5 sacks, 75 tackles, and 1 blocked kick). He had his best statistical season as a junior when he stepped into the starting and never left, but continued to be a special teams stand out as well (2 interceptions, 11 passes defensed and 102 tackles). As a senior Scott stepped into the leadership role leading the secondary (2 ints, 9 Passes Defensed, 1 fumble recovery, 5 forced fumble and 91 tackles). Some consider him over rated and he needs more development. But he is intelligent and hard working and knows how hard he needs to work to get better. He is undersized, but tough, fast, and athletic for a safety. He looks to be the future for this team when Law leaves and Wilson moves over to Corner. So he will have another season to develop since Law will be on the Pats this season, and released or traded next season. He has springy legs and will face ball carrier with good forward motion, bent knees and spring into his tackles. Hitting with good leg drive, and showing a knack for forcing fumbles, he is a rugged special-teams player and should have an impact here. So hopefully by the end of the season he will no longer be the forgotten man, but “Super-Ram”.
Belichick:
"Guss
was a very productive player at Florida and had a number of different
responsibilities. He played close to the line in the nickel, played down in the
slot in some of their sub-defenses, played in the deep part of the field, played
in the box. Same thing with Dexter [Reid] at North Carolina and you could see
that through multiple games, multiple years, so how they do with us we'll have
to wait and see but I think they both have quite a bit of experience doing a
number of different things at a good level of competition and in defenses that
are, I wouldn't say they're the same as ours, but there's enough similarities
that we felt like we could get a good evaluation of it. So, they'll be able to
contribute on defense and in the kicking game."
