Pats Fan Mock Draft 2004 |
![]() |
This years draft is a very interesting one for fans of the World Champion New England Patriots. The first round is loaded with talent, and it appears the Pats could pick up two impat players in the first round. Especially if the draft unfolds as many Draftnics having going now, with Stephen Jackson somehow falling to number 21. I believe the Pats most underrated need is at inside linebacker, their top need obviously at Running Back. The problem is that the top rated LBs are outside, while the top rated inside LBer is undersized, the LBer that fits the Patriots defense best is Outside Linebacker Karlos Dansby, who is also undersized. :
| Jonathon Vilma Inside Linebacker 6-2, 220 Miami | D.J. Williams OLB 6-2, 245 Miami |
|
Daryl Smith Inside Linebacker 6-2, 235 Georgia Tech
|
Karlos Dansby OLB 6-5, 235 Auburn |
|
Rod Davis Inside Linebacker Southern Miss 6-3, 246 |
Michael Boulware Outside Linebacker 6-3, 220 Florida St. |
|
Courtney Watson Inside Linebacker 6-1, 234 Notre Dame
|
Teddy Lehman Outside Linebacker Oklahoma 6-2, 235 |
The Pats are in a great position, with no glaring needs, and many extra picks. Look for them to trade up in the first round, especially if RB Jackson or Jones starts to get close, or if for some reason Vince Wilfolk falls within range, which seems to be happening in many draftnics mock drafts. Here are osme of my thoughts:
| # | Team | My Picks: |
My Reasons: |
Top Needs |
| 1. | Chargers | Eli Manning QB Mississippi |
DT, OL, QB, OC, DE, TE, DL, WR
*please note- Key UFA: Page
T, McIntosh T, Garmon G, Wilson S, Christie K
|
Key F.A. Signings: Steve Foley LB OG Mike Goff LB Steve Foley Key F.A. Loses: |

Does this pick need to be explained?
Eli, like his
brother, was raised to be a QB by their father. He succeeded. He is
not as big and strong , nor does he have as good an arm as Roethlisberger, but he knows how to read defenses study film. He
has a chance to become a consummate pro, just like his brother. *
D. J. Boyer of Football.com reports: Ben
Roethlisberger is here (at Senior Bowl practice) making the rounds with
Leigh Steinberg. 3 teams showed immense interest in Roethlisberger...San
Diego...Cleveland....Dallas. * USAToday.com reports: The Chargers have the No. 1 overall pick, and they are desperate for a franchise-type quarterback. So it's a slam dunk they will snag Mississippi's Eli Manning with their pick, right? Not exactly. The Chargers still have the burn marks to show for giving super-bust Ryan Leaf some $12 million. They no longer sprain their arm giving back slaps to themselves for drafting Drew Brees in the second round. It seems they will trade down and try to upgrade both lines, and pick up a quarterback either in the free agent market on in a trade. |

| 2. | Raiders | Ben Roethlisberger QB Miami (OH) |
* Key UFA: Stubblefield DT, Bromell DE, Woodson CB, Mirer QB, Badger G, Dorsett S, Shaw CB |
Key F.A. Signings: TedWashingtonDT (OUCH!) OG Ron Stone DL Ike Charlton Key F.A. Loses: DT Rod Coleman LB Eric Barton |

I know Fitzgerald is the popular choose here, but QB is a huge need on this team. Rick Mirer was the starting QB at the end of the season! If you have a shot at a franchise QB, you have to take it. Plus this years drafts is deeper at WR then I've ever seen, and this was before Mike Williams nay enter the draft. I believe all the wide outs will start to fall as a result. Are the raiders better of with Fitzgerald here, and a QB in the second round, or Roethlisberger here and Jenkins or Woods in the 2nd, or Colbert, Henderson, or Wilford in the 3rd? That is the question Davis will be asking himself in just a couple of months. Alternative: None. When you have a shoot at a franchise QB you have to take it. This will also increase the value of Gannon. He may only have a year or two left in his body, but as a mentor/back-up he may have 4 or 5 years left. D.
J. Boyer of Football.com reports:
It might be too early to speculate about
something like this but it seems like the Browns interest in
Roethlisberger is even hotter than first reported. So hot in fact that the
Browns are toying with the idea or may have already talked to the Raiders
about moving into the #2 spot in the first round. If this happens expect
the Raiders to try and land Shawn Andrews at tackle and the deal from
Cleveland would most likely involve a player like Tim Couch or Quincy
Morgan. |
||||
| 3. | Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald WR Pittsbergh |
Key UFA: Yeah Right!
|
Key F.A. Signings: QB Shaun King Key F.A. Loses: |

Cards get lucky again this year, and grab the
Offensive rookie of the year, from the WR position, again. May be
McCown can be an NFL QB with Anquan Boldin and Fitzgerald at WR, YIKES!
Oh yeah, don't forget the Dennis Greens is a friend of Fitzgerald Sr.
and knows Larry Jr personally. So maybe Greens lack of interest in
Roethlisberger is not a put on. As for Fitzgerald, Scott Pioli said
that he was the highest rated player he has ever
evaluated at any position, 'nuff said. |

I'm a big Big-Uglies guy. I like to draft O-Linemen and D-Linemen first. Giants have a lot of needs on the O-Line. Gallery, Udeze, or Wilfork would be nice fits here. But Mike Williams has declared for the draft and is the top rated player. He is USC all-time leader in Touch Downs scored. Think about that. Think of all the great running backs that went to school at USC. Williams scored 30 TDs in two seasons, more then any of those great runners scored in 4. He wasn't even a football player in high school, he was a basketball player. His potential has to be considered on the Jerry Rice/Marvin Harrison- best of all-time level. He is only 20. The Maurice Clarett ruling is going to prove disastrous for a lot of kids, but Williams will not be one. Alternative: Kenechi Udeze DE/DT. Pass rushing help for Strahan. Udeze is the kind of D-Lineman that rises as we get closer to the draft, but Giants desperate for OL help. ProFootballWeekly.com
reports: Don’t lock in Iowa OT Robert Gallery as the fourth
overall pick in the draft just yet. Although a reliable offensive lineman
is at the top of the Giants’ wish list, New York might consider trading
down if the right offer is there, although that scenario appears unlikely
unless one of the two top QB prospects (Mississippi’s Eli Manning or
Miami (Ohio)’s Ben Roethlisberger) or WR Larry Fitzgerald falls to that
spot. One source close to the team thinks the Giants will sign at least
two free-agent linemen, opening up the possibility that the team could go
after a playmaking linebacker, a pass rusher to deflect some of the
attention away from DE Michael Strahan or even a power running back in
light of Tiki Barber fumbling problems, which made him less dependable as
a fourth-quarter runner. |
||||
| 5. | Redskins | Kenechi
Udeze DE/DT USC |
TE, OC, DB, S, OG, WR, DL,
|
Key F.A. Signings: Key F.A. Loses: |
|
Kenechi will be a DE in the Pro's, but he has played DT at USC, and he can hold up against the run. Did I mention he had 16.5 sacks last season at 285 pounds. He could easy be the second or third pick in the draft. If not for Manning and Roethlisberger he would probably go Number 1. Skins will have a tough choice between him and Winslow, who will be a great one, but pass rushers win over TE in most equations. Current rumors have Gibbs talking about Winslow and Taylor the two Miami underclassmen, which makes me feel safer in this pick. Alternative: Mike Williams WR. If Williams declares and is available here Gibbs can't pass on him can he? Do I have Williams over-rated? D.
J. Boyer of Football.com reports: The
Washington Redskins are defiantly looking for a tight end. If they do not
go the route of Kellen Winslow Jr. in round 1 it is apparent that they
would like to take a tight end no later than round 4. |
||||
| 6. | Lions | Kellen Winslow TE Miami |
*Key UFA: Bryson RB, Jett P, Beverly G, Hall DE, Walker S . |
Key F.A. Signings: OC Damien Woody WR Tai Streets Key F.A. Loses: LB Barrett Green |

Steve Mariucci is an offensive coach who knows how valuable a great TE is in the west-coast offense. With Charles Rogers missing most of last season due to injury, leaving a lot to prove, and Az-Zahir Hakim, who is a great third receiver but not a great starter (49 receptions for 449 yards at 4 million per year), Roy Williams will be hard to pass-up here. However, Winslow is a fast sure-handed receiver, and an underrated blocker from the TE position. Many are calling him the best prospect from the TE position ever! Alternative: Roy Williams. A good young QB is more likely to become a great young QB with young WRs around them. I thought Roy was the best player coming into the draft, after last years draft. KFFL.com
reports: Northern Illinois RB Michael Turner said at the NFL
Combine Friday, Feb. 20, that he has met with the Detroit Lions. |

| 7. | Browns |

I'm a big Big-Uglies guy. I like to draft O-Linemen and D-Linemen first. Browns have a lot of problems on the OL. D-line would not be a surprise either, and Harris, Udeze, Wilfork would be nice fits here. But the O-line must be address, and Gallery has amazing feet and enough size to be a great left tackle for years to come. Browns have to take Gallery if he is available, and then quietly sit back and watch the increased production from all the so-called skilled positions. Alternative: Tommy Harris. With the underachieving Gerald Warren and the over-achieving Orpheus Roye as there starting DT pair, Wilfolk would help. However, I think Tommie Harris would a better fit for there defense. He is the typical one-gap, get to the QB DT. Plus he can also play LDE. Don’t rule out Sean Taylor either, but with Griffith (93 tackles) and Little (6 Int) Safety is not a desperate need. D. J. Boyer of Football.com reports: It might be too early to speculate about something like this but it seems like the Browns interest in Roethlisberger is even hotter than first reported. So hot in fact that the Browns are toying with the idea or may have already talked to the Raiders about moving into the #2 spot in the first round. I’m a big Roy Williams guy, and the Falcons must be praying Detroit doesn’t take him. He adds immediate help for Vick and the over-priced Price. Peerless proved two years ago to be a great number 2 receiver, unfortunately last year he proved he could be the front guy. Williams will be Atlanta’s number one receiver, and Vick best friend, for years to come. Alternative: None. For Vicks sake take the big guy. Jay Goldberg of 90FootballLinks.NET- WR: Price and Finneran are an okay combo. Price has the skills to be a lead receiver, but will certainly not be confused with Moss-Holt-Owens-Harrison. The Falcons are also relatively weak on the bench behind these two, although I am intrigued by Edwards. The Falcons need two receivers. Ideally, one to challenge for a starting spot, and one to play in multiple receiver sets. |

Key F.A. Signings: OG Mike Compton Key F.A. Loses: |

Jags have to address the WR position, but I think this is where the WR start to fall. With some starting quality WR available in the second round, Jags turn to defense. Harris is a 290 pound super aggressive one-gap DT. He was recently timed at a 4.67 in the 40, which is remarkable. He was doubled and tripled teamed in college, which opened a lot of lanes for teammates. Super quick and strong, he should be a good one for a long time. Alternative: Reggie Williams. Top WR left on the board, or top Defender on the board. Will be a hard choice. USAToday.com reports: How the Jaguars fare in free agency will likely determine their direction in the draft. Their top needs are a pass rusher, a shutdown corner and a big time wide receiver. There's been a lot of speculation they may take wide receiver Roy Williams in the draft, but they haven't given any indication if he's in their plans. |

Latest rumor have the Texans infatuated with Taylor, the all-world talent physically, and waver wire talent mentally. He has everything you want in a pro safety. However, he has had off the field issues and may be a detriment to any team he is on. But if he matures he could easily be the best safety in the NFL. He did make it through last season without any trouble, so he maybe a good risk here. Alternative: Wilfolk It seems to me Texans would be crazy to pass on Wilfolk. There D-line needs help, and Wilfolk seems made to be a NT. D.
J. Boyer of Football.com reports:
The Houston Texans are looking towards the
secondary and they may be the team that winds up with Sean Taylor if he is
on the board. The thoughts by many is that the Texans would be looking for
an offensive or defensive lineman in round 1. Sources with the team seem
to be looking there for later rounds or might make a selection there if
Taylor is off the board at #10. If Taylor is still around then the Texans
figure to make him their selection because they feel he is too good to
pass up and would make an immediate impact. |

This is HUGE news for the Pats- Pitt signs Staley. No longer a tough choice here, the Steelers biggest need was QB and RB. The Signing of Duce Staley has tipped their hand. The Steelers have zeroed in on a player, and it's not a running back, which is great news for the Pats. I think the Duce Staley signing has revealed th eSteelers interest in Philip Rivers. Rivers was 4 and 0 in bowl games in college and he was dominate at the Senior Bowl and showed he was not just a systems QB. He will be the third QB taken. He has continued his rise at the combine where he was reported to be very impressive. Alternative: Kevin Jones. May just be to good to pass up. D.
J. Boyer of Football.com reports: I have some
solid info on the Steelers...very juicy as well. Greg Jones worked out at
fullback today and many teams like the idea because he has shown good
hands out of the backfield. Pittsburgh did a lot of work with 2-back sets
last year with Fu'umatu-Ma'afala before they released him. The Steelers
were looking hard at Greg Jones, prompting some of us to speculate they
would take him in round 2 and possibly use him as a fullback, virtually
creating an effective two-back setup on offense. With Mularkey gone
Pittsburgh may scale back the offense and get back to their roots and
pound the ball. A two-headed monster with Jones in the 2nd round would
likely mean they go for a corner in round 1. It is a risk to bank on him
falling into round 2 there but the scenario on offense there is
interesting. |

Jets still looking to replace Coleman and Glenn at CB. So gambling on Gamble may not be the worst idea. Gamble in an amazing athlete who seemed to find his natural position, CB, while at Ohio State. Plus he can help out at WR on occasion. Alternative: Reggie Williams WR. The top WR available. But if Mike Williams comes out they could be looking at Roy or Reggie. USAToday.com reports: The Jets draft 12th and have serious needs at receiver, linebacker and defensive back. Unlikely to trade up for the second straight year, the Jets might not have a shot at one of the top three or even four receivers so they may focus on defense. Two corners who the Jets seem interested in are DeAngelo Hall (Virginia Tech) and Chris Gamble (Ohio State). Miami S Sean Taylor has also been mentioned |

Wilfolk is the best NT prospect in the draft. Him still here at 13 is a sign as to how deep this draft really is. He is a monster to move and may be the best run stuffer in the draft. Plus he still has enough speed to get to the QB. Alternative: Mark Clayton. No O-Lineman worth taking here, but there appear to be plenty of interior linemen available in the second round. So DT or WR makes the most sense here. D. J. Boyer of Football.com reports: Keary Colbert of USC has been very solid for the North (at Senior Bowl practices) and looks like he could be the ideal #3 receiver who could play the slot on a pass oriented team. I guess to gage a wide receiver you see how interested the Rams are and they like Colbert The Bills are also interested in Colbert. USAToday.com reports: The Bills draft 13th overall and their priorities are pass-rushing defensive end, center or guard to shore up a weak middle of the offensive line, and speed receiver to complement Eric Moulds. Pass rushers Will Smith of Ohio State and Kenechi Udeze of USC are likely to be there when Buffalo selects. No interior offensive linemen would provide good value at 13 so moving down is a possible move. |

Bears still looking to replace Washington, who they gave away to the Pats for a 4th rounder. Wilfork appears to be best run-stuffer in the draft, and could go anywhere from 5-20, but Jones is superb athlete who stock will soar once he start working out for teams. He has 4.3 speed at 218 pounds. Remember in his first two seasons he was thought of as an underachiever with all his vast athleticism and small production Bears would like to come out of this draft with a starting RB. Alternative: Stephen Jackson. Bears can't pass the fastest rising player in the draft. The
Chicago Tribune reports: with the Bears drafting 14th overall
in the upcoming NFL Draft, it may give them a shot at rookie RBs
like Kevin Jones (Virginia Tech) or Steve Jackson (Oregon State). |

More HUGE news for Pats, Buccs sign Charlie Garner Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Appeared to be the three teams in front of the Pats interested in a running back. Now it appears all three are no longer interested in Runnign backs At 350 pounds Andrew is a top ten pick, and a vicious road grader. At 400 pounds, which he is rumored to be at, he is a vicious risk, and will certainly have a shortened career. But the Bucc's need a right tackle, and the talent is still there. Alternative: Mark Clayton. Would be an interesting replacement for Crybaby Johnson. The
St. Petersburg Times reports the Tampa Bay Bucccaneers are
happy USC WR Mike Williams has decided to enter the NFL Draft. Head coach
Jon Gruden said the team is going to have to do their homework on him and
that Williams is a "heck of a player." Gruden is
encouraged with this year's class of wide receivers that are entering the
Draft. "There's some very interesting prospects," Gruden said.
"The receivers in this draft are big, physical guys. There's an awful

Hall has amazing speed, and is probably the fastest player in the whole draft. Has a reputation as not being the smartest DB in the draft, but he should minimally come in as a rookie and be a dynamic return man! D. J. Boyer of Football.com reports: The 49ers are also a team that seems to be leaning towards the secondary with their first round selection. It sounds like the 49ers are anxious for the private workout by Virginia Tech cornerback DeAngelo Hall and he would be the front runner for their top selection at this time. Alternative: Mark Clayton. Another replacement for another whining reciever. |

I'm predicting the Bengal's take the top rated corner they can find, BUT there is no way they can pass on Smith. I think he will be a terrific pass-rusher for years to come. Bengals got 11 sacks from there two starting DE's combined, Smith could be averaging that in a year or two. Draftnics are saying this is one of the deepest drafts ever, and Smith not being a top ten pick is a sign of the amazing talent in this first round. Alternative: Will Poole. I really like this kid. He hits like a safety, can cover like a corner, and is smart. Has a lot Ty Law in him. Bengals may have to take him. USAToday.com
reports: The Bengals could go all defense on Day 1 of the
draft. Predictions range from cornerback Will Poole of Southern California
and Derrick Strait of Oklahoma to linebackers and defensive tackles.
Ricardo Colclough, a Division II standout from tiny Tusculum College, is
another cornerback the Bengals coached and liked at the Senior Bowl.
Defensive tackles Randy Starks of Maryland and Darnell Dockett of Florida
State are seen as possible first-day picks. So are linebackers D.J.
Williams of Miami (Fla.) and Teddy Lehman of Oklahoma. The Bengals have
the 17th, 49th and 80th overall picks on Day 1 April 24. |

Saints need a corner the way the Pats need a running back. I thought Poole was excellent in one of the alleged championship games;-0 He is fast has excellent ball skills and at 6' 190 has the size to be a good one. This would be an excellent pick for the Saints. Plus he hits like a safety. I really think he has a chance to be a great one. Alternative: Dunta Robertson CB. Most people have him rated over Poole. Jay Goldberg of 90FootballLinks.NET- DB: Ambrose, Thomas and Carter are three veterans corners who do a solid job. However, a mix of age, the UFA status of Thomas and the fact that Carter never seems to be available for 16 games, look for the Saints to draft a young corner in a draft deep at cornerback. Bellamy is an underrated player. He was always a better strong safety than free safety as the Saints found out last year. Jones is an overrated player who the Saints will stick with because he was given a big contract. USAToday.com reports: The Saints will have the 18th pick in the first round as well as a pair of second-rounders. It would not be a surprise to see them use all three for defensive help with the priorities being linebacker and cornerback (or cornerback and linebacker) and defensive tackle |

I believe Stark will be flying up the charts as we get closer and closer to draft time. He played DT and DE in college at 6-4 305, and he is only growing. He can be a force against the run, and still has enough speed to get to the QB. He could start at DE his rookie year, or be the primary back-up at 3 positoin on the defensive line. In fact, he may be best compared to Kevin Williams. Big and strong enough to play DT, and Quick and fast enough to play DE. Alternative: Derrick Strait CB. B. J. Boyer of Football.com reports: Miami has made their desire for Philip Rivers known and it looks more and more like he will be the pick by the team at #20 *ProFootballWeekly.com reports: The Dolphins’ QB situation most likely will look very different in 2004 than it did in ’03. Backup Brian Griese is all but gone, given his high price, and word is starter Jay Fiedler isn’t far behind him out the door. Sage Rosenfels will be the primary backup, and the Dolphins, whom team observers believe will be armed with two first-round picks because it will decline to match any huge offers to restricted free agent DE Adewale Ogunleye, will be on the market for a youngster at quarterback. North Carolina State’s Philip Rivers and Tulane’s J.P. Losman are names that have been mentioned early on, and Miami also is expected to be a player in the Drew Henson sweepstakes. *USAToday.com reports: Offense is a top priority for the Dolphins, specifically at quarterback, wide receiver and along the offensive line. The Dolphins have the 20th overall selection but may be willing to trade it for an established NFL quarterback or even promising prospect Drew Henson. |

Okay, so I cheated, but Jackson seems to be slipping down to the Pats in most mock drafts, BUT HE WILL BE A TOP TEN PICK. If you saw him run in the Las Vegas Bowl, like me, you would be confused and happy by this development. I think Belichick is thinking about a big DT/NT here (He loves D-linemen in the first round), but if Jackson slipped down to 15 or 16, which somehow seems eminently possible right now, the pats have to trade up and take him. I don't think they can wait to see if he drops all the way to 21, and they certain have a second or third rounder to spare to secure a thousand yard rusher! He is already being compared to Edgerrin James. If you give Brady a thousand yard rusher behind him the Pats repeat (Please note: of all the MVP candidates who played QB Brady was the only one without a thousand yard rusher behind him, which why I say he was robbed, and NO, I'm not a homer;-) ; I believe Jackson could be that back. I like Jackson because he is bigger and quicker then Kevin Jones, but Jones is definitely faster, which is why I think he goes first, he has the better triangle numbers. Now let us move on to the LSU connection, Michael Clayton. Big, strong, fast, competitive, tough, smart- he is a Belichick type player. The question is will Belichick use a first round pick on a WR, I didn't think so, but Clayton is a special player. If Jackson is not on the board Clayton would not be a huge surprise here. The next player is Wilfolk, a huge Ted Washington NT type. For some reason he seems to be dropping with Jackson. If he slipped to 15 or 16 I think the Pats should trade up for him, but Belichick does not seem to like Miami players so I'm not sure he will. Which brings us to Jonathan Vilma, an undersized Inside Linebacker from Miami who could back-up and play special teams as he gains weight. Other then Jackson and Wilfolk, I believe Vilma would the most valuable player to this team. He may be available at 32 though, so I don't think they will take him here regardless. So my prediction is they trade up to 15, 16, or 17 for Jackson, Jones, or Wilfolk. Alternative: Chris Perry. *John
Czarnecki of FoxSports.com reports: Steve Jackson may be the
top runner in the draft and the Patriots are considering stockpiling their
four picks in the first two rounds — Nos. 22, 32, 50 and 64 — in order
to move up to get him. |

This pick breaks Belichicks heart. Big, strong, fast, played 2-gap in Patriots type defense under Sable. His stats are undervalued because of system. I think he could turn out to be one of the top players from this draft. In fact, if Pats can't get Jackson or Jones I would not be surprise to see them take Hill and hope Chris Perry falls to them. Hill is the most underrated player in the draft.Parcells has to be thinking about hoping over the Pats for Jackson or Jones. They may need a RB more then the Pats. But D-line is in just as bad a shapes and Hill can step right in a be an upgrade over Willie Blades, and maybe even La'Roi Glover. Defense and running game, that's Parcells. Alternative: Chris Perry. Len
Pasquarelli of
ESPN.com reports: Parcells is
convinced that, despite a modestly-talented roster, the Cowboys honestly
don't need all that much tweaking in the offseason. Don't be too surprised
if the Cowboys use their first-round choice on a defensive lineman,
probably a tackle. Then, in the second round, they would address the need
for an upgrade to current tailback Troy Hambrick. |

Seahawks need D-Linemen, as in multiple. D.J. Williams will be a giant temptation here, but there D-line is such a mess they have to go with the top DL available. In my opinion that's Edwards. He is not going to get you 10 sacks a year, but will fight for every inch on the field. He will stuff the run with everything he has. Alternative: D.J. Williams. If they are looking for the best athlete available, then Williams may well be their man. USAToday.com reports: Seattle holds the 23rd pick of the first round. Upgrading the defense remains a priority, but the Seahawks have generally placed value above need. They used previous first-round picks on RB Shaun Alexander and OG Steve Hutchinson despite having no glaring holes at either position. The Seahawks could stand to find young starting talent at DE and SS. They need depth at CB, LB and DT |

I don't know, Williams just seems to fit here. LB will be a big issue here for Denver, and I think it's to early for Odom, but teams always reach for D-Linemen. Okay, but Williams is another superb athlete from Miami and at 6-2 245 pounds has enough size to be a great one. Has not put it al together yet. Alternative: Ben Troupe. I have him falling later then he should, for no real reason. He should be a first round pick, and this would be a nice fit for him. USAToday.com reports: The Broncos draft No. 24, and there's some thought that if Shannon Sharpe retires as expected, they'll go for a tight end in the same mold. Jeb Putzier was thought to be that guy but he hasn't progressed the way the team thought, partially because of injuries. Denver also could use another cornerback but after going bust two years in a row they may be reluctant to go that direction again. They also need more help along the defensive line, especially if Daryl Gardener doesn't return. The team also needs an impact player on special teams, someone to handle returns, and possible help at wide receiver, another need area. |

Seems to be the fastest riser in the draft. He has Excellent feet and great ball skills, and like Poole has the size to be a great one. I would think a QB would be worth a look here, but they are reportedly looking for a Corner. Alternative: J.P. Losman QB. USAToday.com reports: The Packers own the 25th pick in the first round. They hit it right for a change last year in the first round with linebacker Nick Barnett and probably will look toward defense again in April. Areas of need include safety, cornerback, defensive end and nose tackle. They don't necessarily need another starting linebacker but their backups are next to worthless. |

I think Ben Troupe would be an interesting choice here, Rams TE's situation is not good. However CB is a more important position and they are more desperate for help there. Strait has all the physical tools, but has not put t all together yet. I could see him slipping into the second round, but desperation calls for reaches, and most draftnics are higher on Strait then me. Alternative: Ben Troupe. I have him falling later then he should, for no real reason. He should be a first round pick, and this would be a nice fit for him. D.
J. Boyer of Football.com reports: Keary Colbert of USC has been very solid for the North (at Senior Bowl
practices) and looks like he could be the ideal #3 receiver who could play
the slot on a pass oriented team. I guess to gage a wide receiver you see
how interested the Rams are and they like Colbert |

I think help for McNair would be the top priority here, and Mark Clayton would be a great addition for them. But Frank Wycheck has been in the league for 11 seasons and needs to be replaced. Troupe has the size, speed and hands to be a good one. He could go much higher then this. May have to take Odom to replace The Freak, or Tubbs to replace Smith. Alternative: Alternative: Ben Troupe. I have him falling later then he should, for no real reason. He should be a first round pick, and this would be a nice fit for him. KFFL.com

Some think Reggie is a better prospect then Roy, and they may be right. Both are big, fast and productive. While Roy is faster, Reggie appears to be a little smoother coming in and out of cuts, which is paramount in the NFL. Eagles would be crazy to pass on any WR here, and Williams is clearly the top player available at a need position, period. But we have dissention: B.J Boyer of Football.com: Sources within the Eagles and those close to the team claim that the NFC runner-ups are busy looking for players for the defensive front seven. Many say that by getting a prospect that can bring the heat on the quarterback around the edge it could free up the middle for players like Corey Simon and Darwin Walker. Also, more pressure means that the secondary will not be as vulnerable. These comments surely spell the end for Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent or both in an Eagles uniform. Expect Jevon Kearse to get a hard look from the Eagles in the offseason USAToday.com reports: The Eagles own the 28th pick in the draft. They head into the offseason with needs at defensive end, linebacker and wide receiver. They'll probably try to address the first and last ones in free agency, which means they could go after an inside linebacker in the first round of the draft. Alternative: Donnel Washington. There are some D-Linmen available including Tubbs and Darnell Dockett. Washington appears to have the most upside. |

Colts really need a corner here and if Poole, Robinson, or Strait slide down they will gleefully grab him. Otherwise, it will be another reach for a bid DT to clog up the middle. Washington is physical specimen who should start to rise at we get closer to the draft. He still has some learning to do, but if he puts is all together he could be something special. USAToday.com reports: Indianapolis will have the 29th pick in the first round on April 24. The Colts will have seven picks to use this year, regaining a seventh-round pick in a trade last fall with the St. Louis Rams for S Rich Coady. The Colts are expected to look to continue improving its defensive unit, specifically along the interior defensive line, in the secondary and to upgrade depth at middle linebacker and along the offensive line. Alternative: Michael Boulware. There are some D-Linmen available including Tubbs and Darnell Dockett, but does Boulware seem to the perfect fit for a Dungy defense, or am I crazy;-) Speed, speed, speed, Dungy just loves the speed. |

Chiefs run defense maybe the worst in the history of play-off teams. If they take anything other then defensive players on the first day then this draft will a disaster. Will not advance a round in th eplay-offs if they don't address this disastrous need. Alternative: Isaac Sopoaga, *Igor Olshansky- The two DT who amazed scouts by benching 225 pounds over 40 times each, 42 and 41 respectively. Teams looking for run-stuffers will be try to steal one of these two in the 2nd. Jay Goldberg of 90FootballLinks.NET- DL: A unit in need of a major upgrade. The Chiefs should let Hicks go in free agency and replace him with a real pass rusher. Holliday and Hicks are both solid players, but should not be paired together, neither is a monster rusher. At tackle, Sims is young, inconsistent, but will get better. Browning is better coming off the bench than starting. A run-stuffing tackle also needs to be added. USAToday.com reports: Kansas City will pick No. 30 in the first round and should be looking hard for help at corner or wide receiver in the early rounds. Later on, pass-rushing ends and run-stuffing linebacker will be priorities.

He is the player everybody is trying to steal in the second round. At 6-2, 200, Woods ran between a 4.45-4.5. Not as big as the big name receivers from this draft, but has the ability to be a great one. I was hoping the Pats would steal him in the second round. He is easily the most underrated receiver in the draft. He is a Belichick type receiver. Beats opponents will skill, intelligence, and hard work, plus may have the best hands in the draft. Smith resigned so they may pass on WR, but Proehl has been around for over a decade. And Dyson has never impressed since he's been in the league. Alternative: Jonathon Vilma. Could use some help at Linebacker, and taking the player the Pats need would certainly cause no tears around Carolina. B.J Boyer of Football.com: Keary Colbert of USC has been very solid for the North (at Senior Bowl practices) and looks like he could be the ideal #3 receiver who could play the slot on a pass oriented team. I guess to gage a wide receiver you see how interested the Rams are and they like Colbert The Panthers are also interested in Colbert. |

Vilma
is ultra fast and instinctive. He always seems to know where the ball
is. He is horribly undersized, which may cause him to drop down this
far. If he had D.J. Williams size he would be a top ten prospect. He is
one of those players where you have to throw out the combine numbers and
watch him play. Watch how he is always around the ball. He will gain
weight naturally with age, and will primarily be a back-up/special
teamer as a rookie anyway. Pats must address the inside linebacker depth
in this draft. Chris Perry is rising. The Pats may have to take him
here, because we all know Jackson and Jones are not dropping to 21. Pats
will have to trade up to get either one of those runner, an idea they
are currently thinking over. Perry is a strong tough runner, but not as
fast as Jackson or Jones. He is a little slow to the the line, but is a
super productive RB, and a Belichick type player. If the Pats don't go
for a RB with their first pick, they may have to trade up a few spots
for Perry. As we get closer to the draft his stock my force the pats to
take him at 21. I'm not sure the Cowboys can pass on him at 22. Vernon
Carey is another tempting Miami player, the Pats are already stating
they will not give Woody what he wants, so an OG is a possibility here.
However, the Patriots did the impossible last season, they made hade
their O-line younger, AND better as the season went along. Plus
Belichick is famour for picking up O-linemen in the later rounds (Dan
Koppen) and as free-agants (Tom
Ashworth, Russ
Hochstein,
and Brandon
Gorin). There appear to be a number of
options for the O-Line in later rounds. Karlos Dansby is a vastly
interesting option. Belichick said at the draft last year, that he
wondered where all the tall linebackers were. He wondered why a 6-5
linebacker seemed a thing of the past. Well here is a 6-5 linebacker
with the athleticism to go along with the height. He would a perfect fit
for the Pats defense, only they are over-load with Outside Linebackers
and really need Inside Linebackers. I'm not sure he could make this
team. A rather interesting choice could be Chad Lavalais, who seems
built to be a NT in the Pats defense. He is not the run-stuffer
Washington is, but is a better pass-rusher. If Washington doesn't sign,
and it's starting to like he won't, then a NT is paramount. If they
don't draft a NT/DT, look for Warren to move over, he seems to be only
reason they would not draft a NT early: Dwan Edwards, Donnell
Washington, Marcus Tubbs, or Darrell Campbell. Depending on who they
feel fits best. Note: The Patriots will never draft Maurice Clarett. So
if you put him in this slot then you are a moron and know nothing about
the draft, the Pats, or how Belichick and Poili draft football players,
period. And you should return your Draftnic Membership Card
immediately;-) Thank you. Alternative:
Chris Perry RB. If they can't trade up for Stephen Jackson or Kevin
Jones they will have to Perry. Jay
