Pats Fan Mock Draft 2003 |
![]() |
This years draft is a very interesting one for fans of the New England Patriots. It is the deepest draft I have ever seen, and especially deep at the Defensive Line positions. They have obvious needs along the Defensive Line, and this years draft is the best for Defensive linemen I've ever seen. There could be as many as 13 Defensive linemen taken in the first round, including as many as Seven Defensive Tackles in the first 20 picks. I believe the Pats should take two defensive linemen with their first two picks. They will probably be choosing from these Eight Defensive Linemen:
| *Jonathan Sullivan Defensive Tackle 6-3.5 298 Georgia | Michael Haynes Defensive End 6-4 274 Penn State |
| *Dewayne Robertson Defensive Tackle 6-3 310 Kentucky | Kevin Williams Defensive Tackle 6-4 295 Oklahoma State |
| *Rien Long Defensive Tackle 6-5 290 Washington State (Injury concern) | William Joseph Defensive Tackle 6-4 290 Miami (Fla.) |
| Kenny Peterson Defensive End 6-3 280 Ohio State | *Chris Kelsey Defensive End 6-4 270 Nebraska |

| 1. | Cincinnati | QB,OG/C,FB,
DL,DB,DB
Key Loses: Takeo Spikes LB |
Byron
Leftwich QB
Alt: Carson Palmer QB John Thornton DT Kevin Hardy LB |
One of the ways I judge a coach is by how they draft, and yes I know this is a bit simplistic since there usually is a GM, Owner, or team president who makes the choices. Marvin Lewis is what I would classify as a Defensive Coach. A Defense Coach is a head coach who was a Defensive coordinator before he became a head coach. Just as an Offensive Coach was an offensive coordinator, or in the case of Mike Tice an offensive line coach, before he became a head coach. The hardest thing, and usually the smartest thing for a defensive coach to do is draft an offensive player in the first round, like Belichick did last season by trading up for Graham. The Bengal's must draft a Quarterback with this pick, or trade down and draft a QB later. Here's an interesting scenario, according to Gil Bryant, Lewis is taking Peter Warrick and Ron Dugan to work out Leftwich. They are going to be catching the passes he throws. I believe you are going to be hearing all week about his great work out Monday. I am so tempted to put Leftwich here!! But I'm to much of a chicken! So I'll stick with Palmer, but if they can't work out a contract with Palmer and Warrick and Dugan like what they saw in Leftwich, well don't be to surprised. Okay forget it. The biggest differences in these two Quarter Backs is Palmer is a better athlete and played at a higher level of competition, but word is he is a nice guy, but not a real leader. Leftwich played at the division one level, which is a negative, but he can make any throw on the field and is known as a great leader, which is a huge asset on the field for a QB. Plus was productive for 3 seasons, as opposed to one for Palmer and Boller. He has a Doctor's note (I know and one form his mom as well right;-), that says his broken shin is 100% healed, and that no more surgery is necessary. I think Warrick and Dugan will give him two thumbs up, and they may just take him. So just for the sake of stirring things up I'll give them Leftwich. This will change a lot of teams thinking. Remember, Leftwich is a big strong pocket passer, and the toughest QB to come out since McNair, and I mean that as the ultimate compliment. |
| 2. | Detroit | WR,RB,CB, OL,DL | Charles
Rogers WR Alt: Kennedy Dre Bly CB |
This is to perfect a fit for it to work. Rogers is the top wide reciever in the draft, and maybe the top player in the draft. Young QB gets great young hometown WR. Mariucci gets his Owens without the attitude, and yes he is that good. He'll speed up the development Harrington tremendously. He caught a TD in an amazing 13 straight games to set an NCAA record. He has it all size, speed, Quickness, intelligence, route-running, hands, etc. Just a great player. |
| 3. | Houston | WR,OL,S, LB,TE,RB | Jordan
Gross OT
Alt: Robertson Alt: Newman Alt: Palmer Alt: Leftwich Zach Wiegert OL Stacey Mack RB |
This
pick is designated for trade, and if Carson Palmer is here this
pick grows in value. Two biggest trade rumors have New Orleans
trading both their picks to get Terrence Newman. If
Carson Palmer is here the Jaguars would love to trade up
and grab him. My trade, is the Vikings moving up to grab Dewayne
Robertson. It appears he has moved past Kennedy on most boards,
and Minnesota has him as their
number one player, or the player they covet the most. So while I
have Gross going here I do believe their is no way he is going
here. There will be one of these four players selected here:
Robertson, Newman, Palmer or Leftwich. Texans must get at
least one running back, Stacey Mack is a huge signing for them. He
has shown signs he can handle the number one job, but that will
leave them with only two running backs on their roster. They may
have to stay here and take Andre Johnson as most draftnics have
them doing. But This is when I start to question new information
from teams. I believe that also every bit of information a team
leaks from now till the draft is misinformation.
I think the Vikes will trade up here, and the Texans will take Gross at 7. Gross is a big, strong, and most importantly mean LT prospect, and solidified his rank as the top Left Tackle in the draft with great workouts during position drills at the combine. He amazed scouts with his quickness setting up in pass protection. He also showed great foot quickness and footwork. He improved his stock and was already considered a top 7 pick. |
| 4. | Chicago | QB,DL,DB, LB,CB,S | Kyle
Boller QB
Alt: Terrell Suggs DE Desmond Clark TE |
Is Stuart starting QB, or holding the job for Kyle Boller, that's right Bear fans word is they may draft him here. This will be a reach, but not as big as you may think. Boller has been the best QB in the off-season. He has been causing scouts and GM's to gasp and cheer at his work outs. and has moved himself into the top ten. He is 6-3 234 pounds and ran a 4.58, and reportedly kneeled down on the fifty yard-line and threw the ball 60 yards through the goal posts! In Chicago according to Gil Bryant, "Boller worked out for the Bears under very, very windy conditions. General manager Jerry Angelo was supposed to watch but did not attend. New quarterbacks coach Greg Olson led the workout, which lasted 35-40 minutes. At the end, Olson asked Boller to stand flatfooted and throw the ball as far as he could. Boller threw it 68 yards with the wind and 61 against it." He is now a top five player, and will not make it to the Ravens at 10. Dick Jauron is an Offensive Coach, and he knows he needs a QB for the long term. Having Boller apprentice behind Stewart for a year two would not be the worst situation to have. And don't forget the arrogance of coaches, coaches know that you can't teach speed, quickness and athletic ability, but most coaches believe they can teach a player the mental part and how to play the game. I believe this is where most of the mistakes are made in the draft, and why the 40 times are the most important statistic as we get closer to the draft. Coach believe they can coach out mental mistakes, and that if the player has the physical abilities, and Boller is the most physically gifted QB in this draft, then they can coach out the other deficiencies. This is why you see the pure athletes moving up boards as the draft approaches. |
| 5. | Dallas | QB,LB,CB,DT,
RB,LB
Key Loses: Raghib Ismail WR |
Carson
Palmer QB
Alt: Terence Newman Dan Campbell TE |
Parcell's has been talking about Newman which makes me thinking he's looking at Offensive Players. The year the Pats drafted Ty Law they only talked about Offensive players. The TE that went to the Browns, O-linemen, and a couple of RB's. I never heard them mention Law's name once. He was always talking about adding to the offense. If he's talking about Newman I would think he was looking at Suggs or Kennedy. If he is talking about improving the Defense I would think he was planning on improving the Offense. If Carson Palmer is here, I don't think Parcell's would hesitate to take him. I just don't believe he thinks he has a Super Bowl caliber QB on his roster. Parcell's KNOWS that he cannot win with out a QB, RB and strong defense. Look at his track record, he always gets a good QB and RB in his first two season in charge and rides them to the Super Bowl. Cowboys are loaded with undersized fast Linebackers that Parcells hates. He will probably have to replace all three starters. |
| 6. | Arizona | WR,CB,DE,WR DT,QB,LB,LB | Terrell
Suggs DE Alt: Terence Newman CB James Darling LB James Hodgins FB Russell Davis DT
|
This scenario leaves the Cards staring at Suggs and Newman, who both dropped because of the QBs. Suggs also drops because of his forty time, and Newman because of his Age. The Cards are desperate for anyone who can rush the passer. They lost Boston could stay here and take Johnson. However, Newman blew scouts away at the combine and most have him as a lock for the top five, and he probably won't make it past Dallas. He may actually be a shut down corner, which is the most over used term currently going around. A shut down corner is an extremely rare commodity, and how many teams really have one 4 or 5? His age may cause him to drop so he will be available here. However, I don't think they can pass on Suggs, who is a hometown boy. He would certainly draw a few fans into the stadium, and Arizona definitely needs to sell a few more tickets. And in the end pass rushers as always at a premium. |
| 7. | Minnesota | DB,DL,LB, DEFENSE! | Dewayne Robertson
DT/NT Alt: Newman CB Denard Walker CB Moe Williams RB |
Minnesota MUST look to its defense. In this scenario Minny trades up to 3 for Robertson, and the Texans take Gross here. They have to get at least one starting corner in this draft. Signing Walker and Irvin was good start in the rebuilding of the Vikings terrible secondary. But Vikes would like to draft Robertson for the same reason I'd like to see him in a Pats uniform, He has the ability to play Nose-Tackle. Robertson is huge and strong and at 6-2 squats low to the ground which is a huge asset for a NT. Finding a NT is the most difficult aspect of playing a 3-4. Most college lineman are DT's or DE's, and can't play the nose. Robertson is a huge and quick prospect who has also produced over the past two seasons. When coaches see him in person at the combine, and then review the tapes of him in games controlling the middle of the line, they will be drooling. He ran a 4.8 at 321 pounds and has benching over 30 reps. |
| 8. | Jacksonville | WR,CB,OL, DB,DE,OG/C | Andre
Johnson WR
Alt: Terence Newman CB Kevin Lockett WR |
Andre Johnson just blew everybody away at the combine and at Miami’s pro-day. He may not last to the 8th pick, but this is one of the deepest drafts ever. He was running sub-4.4’s at 230 pounds, that’s just not right;-) He did drop some passes during position drills, so questions about his hands and concentration will cause him to drop just enough to fall into the Jags hands. The Jags have to be craving Newman, and think he won't be available. But here he is in this scenario he makes it to them. however, Johnson on moved past Newman on most boards, since he is just a freak of nature. This is a tough choice, but with Bobby Shaw and Patrick Johnson gone WR becomes even m,ore of a top need. |
| 9. | Carolina | QB,OL,DB, TE,LB, | Terence
Newman CB
Alt: Kwame Harris OT Doug Brzezinski OG |
The signing of Jake Delhomme, apparently has quenched Carolina’s thirst for a QB. I still desperately want to give them Boller, but I think he'll be gone by now. They really need help on offense, but the best player on the board on board is Newman. Their secondary really needs an upgrade and he just keeps impressing everybody everywhere he goes. It really is unlikely he drops this far. The loss of Chris Terry will make Harris rather attractive, he is only 20 years old and in three years could be the best O-linemen taken from this draft. Harris will step right in at RT and stay there for the next 15 years. He has the pass protection skills of a LT, and is the best athlete of the big three O-linemen. Carolina has good young defense that will lead them no where until they get a decent QB! |
| 10. | Baltimore | QB,WR,DL,OL, LB,RB,DB |
Jimmy
Kennedy DT
Alt: Rex Grossman QB Riddick Parker DL Corey Fuller CB |
The Ravens QB’s stink, and they have to be hoping one of the big three QBs reaches them. The desperately need to trade up and grab one of the top three QB's. This draft will be complete disaster for this team if they don't grab a QB in the first round, and their Wide receiver situation is just as bad. Kennedy slipped this low because of his tendency to not play every down. His play by play tenacity worries some teams. But Kennedy is a monster. He is just so big and strong at the most difficult position to get quality players. He actually lost weight to improve his stock by showing up at the combine at a muscular 322 pounds. He really has the talent to be a dominate DT for a long time, and we all know how valuable an all-pro D-Tackle is in the NFL. His falling will enable the Ravens to trade down Pick up an extra pick or two and grab Grossman Later. This puts him in the reach of the Pats. Would you give up 14 and our second round pick to move up here or to 9 and take Kennedy? I would. |
| 11. | Seattle |
Alt: Marcus Trufant CB Damien Robinson S
|
If 'Hawks lose Walter Jones they may have to take Harris or Gross. Seattle will be looking to use multiple picks to help both lines. If they resign Jones then they will need a O-Guard, maybe, but they will have to use at least two high picks on the D-Line. Williams would be the perfect guy, because he can play D-End and still back up Eaton and Randle who is near the end. I think this pick will start the run on DT. A lot of people seem to have Sullivan going here, but that would break my heart. They will be tempted by Trufant and Steinback, but The D-Tackles are to good to pass up. The question is which one? Of the big five 3 remain according to Profootball weekly Williams is the top rated guy left. He has added 15 pounds of muscle since last season, he showed up at the combine at 304 pounds. He was also the best D-Linemen at the senior bowl. He is more of a one-gap penetrator, but has no problem holding up against the run. The Chargers said to really want him.
| 12. | St. Louis | CB,CB,TE,LB,
WR,RB,DL
Key Loses: Dexter McCleon CD Dre Bly CB |
Marcus
Trufant CB
Alt: Jerome McDougle DE Dave Wohlabaugh C |
Free agency and one trade has changed this pick completely. Cards lost two Corners Dexter McCleon and Dre Bly, and Aeneas Williams is near the end. If Trufant is here they will take him. They have 7 free agency on the offensive line, but Wohlabaugh is underrated, and Turley will step right in at Right Tackle and be god send. Trufant has enough size and speed to be a very good corner, and he has exceptional Man-on-man cover skills. I have been comparing him to Ty Law, and I mean that as the ultimate complement. |
| 13. | Jets | CB,LB,DT,DB,
WR,OG,DB
Laveranues Coles WR Randy Thomas |
Boss
Bailey LB
Alt: Eric Steinback OG Tom Nutten OG |
Steinbeck would step right in for Randy Thomas, and can back up the LT. The Jets have to be looking at Trufant and must know they he won't get past Rams. They have been rumored to be trying to trade into the top 5 to grab Newman, who would start easily in this pathetic Secondary. It will cost them at least their two number one picks, but it may be worth it. They made need to draft 3 D-Backs in this draft. With Bailey still on the board and the Jets aging LBers they have to grab him. He ran a 4.35 at 230 pounds, he would not be a reach here. The scary part he could actually start at Safety for this team easily. Edwards saw what Derrick Brooks did in Tampa, and Bailey has a chance to be just as great a player. I'm a big Bailey fan. I think he is just a superior athlete who plays to his speed, which most player don't. Jets may have to go a D-Tackle here, or they may have to reach for Woolfolk or Dennis Weathersby here. |
| 14. | New England | DT,OT,CB, DE,ILB,WR, RB, | Jonathan Sullivan DT
Alt: Marcus Trufant CB Alt: Kwame Harris OT Alt: William Joseph DT Alt: Eric Steinbach OL Key Additions: Rodney Harrison!!! SS Tyrone Poole CB Chris Akins S/ST |
With
Jonathan Sullivan moving up the board quick,
if he's still here the Pats will take him. Sullivan is 6-3 308
pounds young fast strong and a great athlete. It's almost a cliché
to compare him to Seymour, but they come from the same team play
the same position and both are known for their hustle and hard
work. Sullivan is a little smaller but quicker. It is starting to
look like he will not be available. I have also changed my
mind about Suggs. I have always felt that Suggs would change their
entire defense, but with the signing of Colvin and the switch to
the 3-4 I’m not sure I would give up a second to trade up for
him, although I have changed my mind again, with Colvin rushing
the Passer form the Strong- side, and Suggs rushing from the
Weak-side! That may be to much to pass up, YIKES! But you would
have to start with the 14 and the 19 pick in order to get high
enough to draft him, and that is a big price. I have also always
thought that if Harris or Trufant slides down to them they should
take him at 14. However, I have changed my mind. As I wrote in my
newest article, The
Big Five, I think they must get one of the big five DT at 14, and
then grab the best player available at a need position at 19.
And, I've changed my mind on Suggs again, it's getting to close to
the draft;-) I just received my Ourlad’s draft guide, which I
love because it shows the depth chart of each team in order of
position and has every player on the roster. In other words you
can see the entire roster, and not just the starters or a long
list of players, but sectioned by position. This is great for
doing the draft. Here is the Depth chart for the Pats D-Line as
shown in Ourlads: LDE-
55 McGinest, Willie 94/1 LDT- 93 Seymour, Richard 01/1; 94 Kocher, Ken F02 RDE-
98
Pleasant, Anthony U/SF; 97
Jarvis, Green 02/4 If you look at the RDT position they have two D-ends listed. Hamilton and Lyle are both DE’s who had to move to DT because the only DT they have on the roster is Seymour, unless you know who Kocher is, because I never heard of him? I do believe they will be switching to a 3-4, but DT is their number one priority by far. If they want to play a 4-3, I would say they had to take two DT’s in the first round. However I do believe they have a 3-4 in mind which will allow them to draft a Corner or O-Tackle at 19. These two picks (14 and 19) will go long way to showing what the Patriots defense will look like next season. If they take two D-linemen then they will be staying in a 4-3. If they take Bailey or Henderson either here or at 19 then they will be switching to a 3-4. The signing of Tyrone Poole lessens the need for a corner in this draft. Boss Bailey is not a Belichick type linebacker. He prefers the big, strong, tough LBers who can stand up at the point of attack, like Henderson, who just may be to good to pass at 19. It looks like they are going to trade Tebucky, for New Orleans 3rd this year and another pick next year. |
| 15. | San Diego |
Key Loses: Curtis Conway WR
|
William
Joseph DT
Alt: Eric Steinbach OL Lorenzo Neal FB |
Word is Schottenheimer will take any of the big five DTs that fall to him, and that he really wants Kevin Williams. He may have to trade up to get him. Their O- tackles really need upgrade. Steinbeck has improved his stock as much as Boller, and he would be the starting LT for the Bolts next season. He is 6-6 with great feet and quickness and has perfect technique. Signing Boston is huge. He is a great player on the field, but lots of trouble off the field. Getting Steinbeck will help Bree’s on the field as much as Boston. If they strengthen the O-Line this could be one of the best offenses in the league! However, losing Seau and the loss of Harrison will really hurt this defense. So they may have to take a D-line or linebacker here. I think Bolts will be choosing between Steinbach and Joseph, and I keep going back and forth. Steinbach has all-pro talent at Guard, and can play Tackle if necessary, And I would think he could solidify their offense. However, with the loss of Seau And Harrison their defense, which was already their weakness, is in big trouble. |
| 16. | Kansas City | CB,LB,S,LB | Dennis
Weathersby CB
Alt: Andre Woolfolk CB Dexter McCleon CB Shawn Barber LB |
Vermeil has shown his hand, he will take a corner with this pick, He will take either Woolfolk or Weathersby here. He wants a pass-rusher in the 2nd, to take pressure off his secondary, KC’s secondary is a disaster. Weathersby has shown great speed, running a 4.38 forty at the combine. He is 6-1 and 210 pounds and demonstrated great cover skills at Oregon, and every team is looking for a big corner with any kind of cover skills. Word is they want Brayton in the second round. However, Brayton, had a great workout is moving rapidly up the charts, according to Gil Brandt's at NFL.com, "Brayton who weighed in at 270 pounds, ran the 40 in 4.65 and 4.64. His vertical jump was 36½ inches and his broad jump was 9-10." I think they should take Weathersby or Woolfolk here and grab a pass-rusher in the second round. However, Kelsey has been flying up the charts and it now looks like Brayton will be gone before they pick in the 2nd round. The signing of McCleon lessens the need for a CB, and has paved the way for A Kelsey or McDougle here, but I think they must get a starting Corner Back here in the first round. |
| 17. | New Orleans | CB,TE,OL LB,DB,DL | Eric
Steinbach OT
Alt: E.J. Henderson Wayne Gandy OT Orlando Ruff |
I going to have to stick Steinbach in here, He could play guard and allow Charles Bentley to play his more natural Center position. Steinbach has had as good a Post season as any player, and only doubts about his ability to play Left-Tackle have him drop this far. Henderson was a man amongst boys last season. His bad back has kept him out of the top ten, and he may drop further. |
| 18. | New Orleans | CB,TE,OL LB,DB,DL | Andre Woolfolk CB
Alt: E.J. Henderson Ashley Ambrose CB Orlando Ruff LB |
It appears the deal is set for Tebucky Jones. They will give the Pats a third this year, probably 78. So Saints will not need a safety here. Saints really need a CB who can step in, and are trying to trade up and get Trufant or Newman. In this scenario they maybe able to trade up and grab Newman without giving up both 17 and 18. They have an extra second round pick that they could combine with 17 and get up to (9, 10, or 11, which would give them Newman, at 9, or Trufant at 10 or 11. However, if they can't trade up then will have to take Woolfolk or Weathersby, which ever KC doesn't take. And if Woolfolk can learn the nuances of coverage he could be the best corner to come out of this draft 3 or 4 years down the road. Woolfolk is rated much higher by most other draftics. He has amazing athletic ability, and can get anywhere he wants to on the field, but doesn’t appear to know what to do when he gets there, but you can’t coach speed and quickness. |
| 19. | New England | DT,OT,CB, DE,ILB,WR, RB, |
Alt: Willis McGahee RB Alt: E.J. Henderson Alt: Michael Haynes DE
Fred McCary |
First the two weird, interesting rumors. One the Raiders sending us pick number 31 and 32, for this pick so they can draft Kelly Washington WR. This would enable the Pats to pick up a WR, DE, Center, or and a corner. Second the Patriots drafting Willis McGahee, here. McGahee is such an interesting prospect. He plays like Michael Vick, when he breaks out of the pocket, Vick just plays at a speed that is faster then everybody else, and make DB's look like they're standing still, McGahee plays at that speed. I keep picturing him against B.C. He took a screen pass on the right side of the field, broke through the line, and there were three BC players between him and the end zone, and he just ran through them like they were standing still. The Pats have enough extra picks to take this chance, and Antwain Smith will still be able to start one more year if necessary. Okay, I'm convincing myself;-) McGahee may still be available at 31 and 32, and then they would have to take him if they trade down with the Raiders. Gil Bryant said he now thinks McGahee is a top 20 pick. At this spot the only player I would take over McGahee is Harris. I really like Kwame Harris. In some respect Belichick does this backwards, he finds a player he likes in the second round and that influences what he does in the first round. He finds a player that fits in with his personality and focuses on him for this pick. I believe that player is Wayne Hunter He is the best athlete at the Tackle position in this draft. In fact, the Pats may have to Draft him here is they want him. It appears he will not make it past the 49ers. So if the Pats trade down from this pick it maybe to pick Hunter. However with Harris still on the board the Pats have to take him. I'm really at a loss on this pick, but I think a left tackle is the biggest need here. I think Haynes or Peterson would be a nice pick up, but Harris is the type of player that can improve a whole offense by protecting your QB on the left side. I think the biggest problem with the Pats O-line is that they have 5 guards playing the 5 positions, at least you could make an argument that all five lineman's best position would be at guard. Harris could step right in at right tackle until he matures a little, he's only 20 years old! I believe in 3 or 4 years he will be the best O-Linemen from this draft. The signing of Colvin has convinced me completely they have switched to the 3-4. With Sullivan in the fold the need for an inside linebacker becomes paramount, unless you believe Ted Johnson can hold up for a whole season, it was great to see him healthy and playing well for the first time in years, but he is a part-time player, and I believe Belichick sees Bradie James as an inside linebacker he can pick up in thesecond or third round, and maybe Vrabel can play inside now that Colvin has taken his position on the outside. And if the Pats take an O-linemen at 14 Peterson will be drafted here. I think the Pats could take Weathersby here if he slips past KC or NO. Which brings up my mantra for the Patriots, “Just take 2 D-linemen in the first round and sort out the rest later.” Also I believe that Haynes would make a great DE in Belichick’s defense. Larry Johnson will not be taken here. |
| 20. | Denver | OT,DL,CB,S | Jerome McDougle DE
Alt Wayne Hunter LT Daryl Gardner DT |
Word is Broncos now consider O-Tackle there top priority and have Hunter penciled in here. However, I tend to not believe any rumors I here in April. Shanahan was said to be drooling over McDougle in March, before the misinformation campaigns are started. He could turn into a Pass-rushing monster. But he will have to give a consist effort. He was non-existent at the beginning of last season and ended up with only 6 sacks. His height is also a concern. However, Shanahan is an offensive coach and their O-Tackle situation is near criminal. They appear set to take the top D-line left on their board whose left, and word they really like McDougle. |
| 21. | Cleveland | LB,LB, OL,TE,LB |
Alt: Terry Pierce Barry Gardner LB |
A lot of draftnics have an O-Lineman going here, but Henderson was a man amongst boys last season. His bad back has kept him out of the top ten, and he will be a dominate player for as long as his back holds up. I was overwhelmed by his talent and smarts in Marylands bowl game this year. Henderson maybe the 5th or 6th best defensive player in this draft, on the field, but his bad back and lack of track speed will hold him back. He should step in and start as a rookie on this team. if Bailey or Henderson drop to 21 they have to take them. Bailey would be perfect for the Browns defense. A TE is a need and Whitten would be a great pick up. They may have to trade up for Henderson or Bailey, because if neither of them last to this pick they will not address their number one with this pick. They have released all three starting linebackers from last season, so don’t be surprised if they really reach for a desperate need position. |
| 22. | New York Jets | CB,LB,DT,DB, WR,OG,DB |
Ty Warren DT Alt: Kenney Peterson DE/DT |
Grabbing Bailey at 13 was lucky. Warren has been moving up the charts. He is just what the Jets need. A big run stuffer in the middle to take the pressure off the pass-rushers on the outside. He was a monster in the beginning of last season, and really slowed down in the second half. It was revealed later that he had suffered a severe ankle injury, that destroyed his power and mobility. Scouts have been paying more attention to the first half of last season and he is soaring up the charts because of it. |
| 23. | Buffalo | S,TE,DE,
WR,RB
Key Loses: Peerless Price WR |
Troy
Polamula S
Alt: Michael Haynes DE Jeff Posey LB Marcus Jones DE Keith McKenzie DE Takeo Spikes LB |
Word is Donahue let Price go so he could grab one of the pass-rushing D-Ends. If Peterson is here he would fit in nicely. However, He looks more like a DT now then a DE, and the Bills signing of Sam Adams makes DE more of a need. And if your looking for a pass rusher, Haynes is just to good to pass up. However, I think Safety has become their top need, and Polamula ran a 4.37 at 220 pounds. Plus, be has all the intangibles you look for in a football player, and a person for that matter. He had a great workout at USC pro day, according to Gil Bryant, "Depending on which watch you were holding, Polamalu's 40s ranged from 4.33 to 4.38. His vertical jump was 43½ inches, and his long jump was 10 feet, 7 inches." Plus word is he is work out warrior who is a great leader and very popular with his teammates. Of course if you look at all their free agent signings, it might make you think they are thinking offense with this pick. Taylor Jacobs or Kelley Washington could be interesting additions for Bledsoe. |

Mathis is dominating the postseason ran a 4.43 at 202 pounds and bench 225 an amazing 22 times. Has the speed to play corner and the size and strength to play Safety. The saints secondary in shambles after loss of Knight, and they may have to draft both a safety and a corner. However Ambrose solves a lot lot of problems and he will allow Mathis to play safety where he had most of his 25 interception. From the immortal Buchsbum, "Bethune-Cookman’s Rashean Mathis was the best cornerback in the MEAC, but when he played corner, teams just would throw away from him. For the second time in three years he was moved inside to free safety and he has picked off eight passes in six games. In 2000, when he played inside, Mathis had 11 interceptions and has 25 for his career. At almost 6-1, 195, Mathis is big enough to play inside, yet also has the speed and quickness to play out on the corner on the next level. If he goes to the Senior Bowl and does well, he could wind up right up there with the big-name defensive backs in the draft." good enough for me. |

Peterson DE/DT
Alt: Chris Kelsey DE |
If Peterson is here he would fit in nicely. He has experience at DT and DE, which may make him a versatile D-Linemen that all teams want. He was great in the Championship game for Ohio State, and added 20 pounds of muscle since that game! He looks more like a DT now then a DE. However, with Strahan on the other side he could be a monster. |

Key Loses: Dana Stubblefield DT J.J.Stokes WR |
Alt: Jon Stinchcomb OT |
The 49ers needed a linemen even before they decided to release Derrick Deese. Wayne Hunter Offensive Tackle from Hawaii. Ran 5.07 in the 40... at 6-foot-6, 303 pounds... did 37 reps of 225 pounds... very enjoyable kid to interview... has a great deal of athleticism and upside... he could be the next guy to come off the board after the first few big names. Len Pasquarelli, "Observations from one AFC general manager: "Everybody likes the guard from Hawaii (Vince Manuwai) and, heck, so do I, OK? But the tackle from over there, (Wayne) Hunter, is a really good player, too. He's a big, rangy guy, a blocker with natural pass protections skills. Pretty good feet for a guy with his dimensions. I mean they throw the ball over there so much in the run-and-shoot (offense), you'd better be able to pass-block, right? But June (Jones, the Hawaii head coach) seems to do a good job getting his kids ready for the combine. In Hunter's case, you'll have to project a little bit about how he'll be as a run blocker and how he will handle playing in a more conventional offense. But he's got a really nice upside to him. Well coached and a solid prospect." He can do the splits as well! |
| 27. | Pittsburgh | CB,S,RB, QB,CB |
Alt: Rex Grossman QB |
Steeler may go for a QB here and surprise everybody. Maddox is no spring chicken and he has to prove he’s not a one year wonder. Grossman has a great arm and appears to have a good handle on the passing game, so don't be surprised if he goes here. I still like Larry Johnson going here. But the secondary really needs to be addressed. However, Doss is a great football player and a leader who ran sub-4.5 at his Pro Day. I’m a big Mike Doss guy. I like field leaders and that’s what he is. He’s a little undersized, and that will hurt him. But he is tough and smart and knows how to play football. Steelers needs a safety, and he would really bring their secondary together. |
| 28. | Tennessee | WR,LB,OL, DL
Key Loses: John Thornton DT |
Kelley
Washington WR
Alt: Jason Witten TE |
Titians don't have a lot of needs besides a healthy McNair, but giving McNair some more weapons is easily the most important. Jacobs has been a productive receiver in a pro-style offense for a number of years, and a lot of people like him. He ran a 4.34 of his pro day, so he has the speed to justify a first selection. They may have to take local product Washington, but being local they maybe more privy to his indiscretions and refuse to take him. Washington has proven his physical health, but not his mental. I would not want him on my team. I’m terrified the Pats may take him. |

Word is Favre is done, and they have no replacement. They have been saying for months they want Grossman, well watch what you ask for because you might just get it. He will also have a year or two behind Favre to develop, and watching Favre for a year or two would not hurt any QB. This is one of those picks that just seems to perfect to work. |

Alt: Chris Kelsey DE Jon Ritchie FB |
Eagles hoping one of the WR or TE's fall to them, and Whitten does. He has the size and the hands to be a good one. EAGLES.COM has them taking Kelsey so I’m reluctant to argue with them. I just think there top priority is getting help for McNab. They may have to go with the Malcontent Washington, who I wouldn’t draft in the 3rd round. They lost Hugh Douglas so they may have to draft a pass-rusher here, there are three top pass-rushers left on the board. |
| 31. | Oakland | OC,DL
Youth RB,LB
Key Loses: Sam Adams DT |
Willis
McGahee RB
Alt: Larry Johnson RB |
The Raiders maybe in the same position as the
Pats, just take two D-Linemen and sort the rest out later. The
salary
cap purge really hurt this team, but they could replace Upshaw and
Adams right here. But the raider MUST come away from this draft with
an O-Center, but Al Johnson and Bruce Nelson have proven to be
solid second or third round choices, and either one of them look
like they could step right in and start for the Raiders. Larry
Johnson Ran a 4.45 at Penn's pro day, and that has made his
slipping out of the first round very unlikely. I would think the
Steelers, Titians, and Raiders would be very
interested. However the wild card of this draft is Willis McGahee
and his bad knee. He was amazing for Miami this past season and I
hope he fully recovers, even if it means helping the Raiders.
If the Pats trade down to this spot they will probably be looking at Eugene Wilson or Sammy Davis, both Corner Backs. Wilson is the more polished of the two, but Davis is bigger and faster and may have a bigger upside. So if you think that a CB is s priority for the Pats this could be an interesting trade(19 for 31 and 32). |
| 32. | Oakland | OC,DL Youth RB,LB | Micheal Haynes DE
Alt" Larry Johnson RB Alt: Terry Pierce LB |
If
Haynes is still here the Raiders may have to
take him. They have a lot of age on the Defensive Line and almost
no pass-rush, so I will have to go with Haynes, who is a
pass-rusher form the left side. But Haynes is the steal of the draft here. He has the size 274 lbs, and ran a 4.7 at
Penn's pro day. DE is not the biggest need, but getting a
pass-rusher from the Left D-End spot is a always a huge advantage.
If the Pats are drafting here and McGahee is on the board they will take him. If not, they could pick up Haynes. He would add a pass rush from thee Weak-side and probably split time with Hamilton. He had 74 tackles and 15 sacks last season and I think he is the most underrated player in this draft. |

Faine OC
Alt: Mike Doss Earlier Choice(s) |
If for some inexcusable reason Bengals don't take a QB in the first they will take Simms here. Bengal's did a good job addressing their main needs in the off season. Now they just need a Center to push Rich Braham, who had a bad season last year. Faine would easy start over Braham here. They really need a young player to help their interior line, and Faine should have been a first round pick. |

Detroit | WR,RB,CB, OL,DL | Larry
Johnson RB
Alt: Onterrio Smith RB Earlier Choice(s) |
I really like Onterrio Smith going here, but Johnson is just as big and ran for 2000 yards. He is slipping because of the apprehension of teams to take a Penn State running back in the first round. |
| 3.
35 |
Chicago | QB,DL,DB, LB,CB,S |
Cory Redding DE Alt: Dewayne White Earlier Choice(s) Kyle Boller QB |
Mike Brown is the only player in there secondary who doesn't need an upgrade. If Haynes is not the most underrated player then Redding is. He looks under-sized at 274 pounds. He looks like he's not playing hard every down, but still seems to get to the QB consistently. I believe that he is just a rare athlete that he appears to be coasting because he plays so effortlessly. Gil Brandt, "Redding did not work out at the Combine, but did here. He stood at 6-3 5/8 and weighed 274 pounds. Redding ran the 40 in 4.88 and 4.89 seconds on two attempts. His vertical was recorded at 29 inches while his long jump was 9-foot-3½. Redding added 26 lifts and ran the three-cone drill in 7.09 and had a short shuttle time of 4.28 seconds. His arms were also measured at 33½ inches." |

Jacobs may be the most polished and ready for the NFL in this class. He is a steal in the second round. This is one of the picks that convinces me this is one of the deepest drafts ever. |

Lloyd WR
Alt: Dave Ragone QB Earlier Choice(s) |
Cards must get a QB, but they appear to be thinking that Josh McCown is their future. If I was the GM it would take me two second to send the card up the podium With Dave Ragone's name on it. They got lucky with Newman in the first, and I believe Lloyd is going to be a good one. Most people have Bryant Johnson rated ahead of Lloyd, but he is just so SMOOOOTH. |

Key Loses: Raghib Ismail WR

Sammy
Davis CB
Alt: Musa Smith RB Earlier Choice(s) |
It looks like the Cowboys are going to take Newman in the first round, but if they don't they will have to take Davis here. Davis showed he had size and speed at the combine. But he showed he needs to work work on his man-to-man coverage skills at the senior bowl. Davis has been very impressive in workouts and is soaring up the charts. He may have worked himself into the first round with an interesting combination of size and speed. If they do take Newman I think Parcells grabs a QB or RB here. |
| 7.
39 |
Jacksonville | Eugene
Wilson CB
Alt: Sammy Davis CB Earlier Choice(s) |
I think Jags will be looking at helping their secondary here and Wilson is a very good man-to-man cover guy, who is a bit undersized; That's why I have him going after Davis.
| 8.
40 |
Minnesota | DB,DL,LB, DEFENSE! | Julian
Battle FS/CB
Alt: Gerald Hayes LB Earlier Choice |
Rumor has it Vikings will take Robertson in the first round. If they take him or Kennedy I believe they will grab a corner here, with the top corners gone they go for maybe the most athletic safety in the draft. I don't think Battle can be a starting corner in the NFL, but he might be a huge nickel corner, and he certainly looks able to play Free Safety. I think he compares nicely to Tebucky Jones. He could be a force at safety, but he'll never be a Corner Back. |
| 9.
41 |
Baltimore | QB,WR,DL,OL, LB,RB,DB |
Chris Simms QB
Earlier Choice |
Losing out on one of the top three QB's makes this draft a failure. Kennedy is a monster and I would love to see him a Pats uniform, but Ravens have the worst QB's in the NFL. Simms is a nice consolation prize, but if you think his failure in big games is not a concern then you are just plain wrong. Hopefully, he has learned from that adversity and will be a better Pro then a college QB. |
| 10.
42 |
Seattle |
George Foster OT Alt: Jon Stinchcomb Earlier Choice |
Seattle may lose Jones to free agency and Chris Terry has had off the field problems that may surface again. So getting a Tackle in the second round may not be the worst idea. Foster is huge Right Tackle who may be able to slide over to the Left-side. He has some injury issues. Many draftnics have him going in the first round. I like Stinchcomb better.
| 11.
43 |
New Orleans | CB,TE,OL LB,DB,DL | Dallas
Clark TE
Alt: Bennie Juppru TE Earlier Choices Andre Woolfolk CB |
Dallas Clark is another interesting choice. He looks like he is ready to step in and start for this team. This is starting to look like a great draft for N.O. Many people had Clark rated ahead of Witten, but Witten is bigger so I think he'll go first. But Clark is 6-3.5, 255 lbs, and ran a 4.55 forty, and he was the best TE in college football last season. These two prospects are similar to Shockey and Graham last season. Although, Witten doesn't have Shockey's great speed, but I think Clark compares well to Graham. |
| 12.

Washington | DB,DT,QB TE,DE | Bennie
Juppru TE
Randy Thomas OG WR Laveranues Coles Dave Fiore OG DT Brandon Noble DE Regan Upshaw WR Patrick Johnson RB Trung Canidate |
Skins have addressed all their major needs in the off season except Safety and TE. Juppru is an effective blocker who over-extends some times and gets himself in trouble. But he is a good receiver with reliable hands, and runs good routes. He will be a good one. |

Key Loses: Curtis Conway WR |

Hayes ILB
Alt: Terry Pierce LB Earlier Choice(s) |
I thought Chargers really wanted an O-Tackle in the first, and I still think they will have a HUGE problem passing on Steinbach, because he can play tackle and guard, but word is they will take one of the big five if they drop. They may have to take Terry Pierce or Gerald Hayes because of the loss of Seau. Hayes dropped earlier because of his height, but he is a tremendous run-stuffer on the field and will step in at the Mike position. And Pierce ran a 4.9-5.04 forty and may have fallen into the third round, where he would be a steal. |

Brayton DT/DE
Earlier Choice(s) |
Chiefs really need someone to rush the passer and take some pressure off weak secondary, and word is they want Brayton here. However, Brayton, had a great workout is moving rapidly up the charts, according to Gil Brandt's at NFL.com, "Brayton who weighed in at 270 pounds, ran the 40 in 4.65 and 4.64. His vertical jump was 36½ inches and his broad jump was 9-10." |

Miami | QB,WR,OLT,LB DT,S,WR | Bryant
Johnson WR

Word is Dolphins will grab a wide receiver with this pick. They have Chambers so speed is not the top priority, and he has everything else you would want in a WR. Then according to Gil Brandt's at NFL.com, "Johnson stood at 6-2 3/8 and weighed in at 211 pounds. He ran the 40 twice for times of 4.37 and 4.41. He had a 36½-inch vertical jump and a 10-6 broad jump. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.14 and the three-cone drill in 7.18 seconds." |

James
seems to be falling, and the Pats may wait until the third round
to grab him. But here's an Interesting piece written by Andy Hart
at Patriots.com, "Patriots
second-year defensive lineman Jarvis Green had good things
to say this week about LSU linebacker and former teammate Bradie
James. James is a 6-2, 242-pound linebacker who has been
widely mentioned as a potential New England selection in the
upcoming draft. “He's a good guy on and off the field,” Green said recently following a workout in the Patriots off-season program. “He's a competitor. Also, the defense at LSU is similar to this defense. For three years he's topped 100 tackles and not a lot of guys do that in the SEC. Last year he was kind of out there by himself. He was the leader and I watched the games and he was all over the place. As far as linebacker goes I think he's one of the top five in the draft.” Green also said that his current employers have talked to him about his former teammate and asked for his opinions on him. “They asked me what kind of guy he was,” Green said. “That's the one thing I've noticed about the coaches here. They don't ask you if he can play, they ask you what kind of person he is first. Patriots Head Coach, Bill Belichick is looking for honest guys on and off the field who will represent the organization. He's a real positive guy.” According to Gil Brandt's at NFL.com, Bradie James is "(6-3, 238) ran the 40 in 4.75, 4.65 and 4.65. He had a 9-foot-5 long jump and benched 16 times. He ran the short shuttle in 4.25 and the three-cone drill in 7.31." He appears to moving up and I think the Pats will have to take him here. And if you think this is a reach just look at James stats he had 154 tackles and 3 sacks. He has played in Belichicks defense for the past two season under coach Saban, and he could be a good one. He looks a little stiff in coverage sometimes, as though he's focusing to much on the instruction the coaches are giving him rather then just playing. He doesn't have the greatest track speed, but he did run down Roy Williams the WR from Texas. He played outside LB at LSU, but most GM's think he'll move to ILB, which is perfect for the Pats. He could split time with Ted Johnson and he could learn, while Johnson doesn't get worn out. An interesting scenario could be a trade up here. Give up a 3rd or 4th to move up and grab Sammy Davis or Eugene Wilson. Again if you think CB is a big need they certainly have the ammunition to move up 10-15 spots and grab a corner. Also Drayton Florence is a small college corner who may need a year to develop, and with the Pats veteran secondary he could play the Dime and learn. |

Denver | OT,DL,CB,S | Jon

Earlier Choice Jerome McDougle DE |
Broncos are rumored to want an O-lineman in the first, but have McDougle as the top D-End in the draft. The risk pays off here as Stinchcomb will come in and start at Left Tackle for this team next season, if they take him here. |

Saints will be looking for a corner with this pick, if they don't grab one in the first round. I would think a LB would be a nice fit here, and And Pierce has the talent to be a good one. His speed will cause him to drop this far. Saints will have to consider this a great draft if they get these four players. |

I will give the Falcons credit for picking up Price, although I still can't believe they didn't Draft Ashley Lelie last year? Reeves has to give Vick more help, Johnson is a tall center who keeps rising up the charts every time a team looks at him. One of the most underrated players in the draft. He will be the starting center on this team next season if they take him here. |

49ers could be in big trouble at WR. If both Street and Stokes leave they may have to draft two WR's early. Gage is a huge receiver, 6-4, who was considered 2nd round material because he was seen as slow. Then he went out a ran a 4.45. The Pats may not be able to pass on him with their pick. |

I had Long going to Colts in the first round in earlier mock draft. But he work out terrible and ran a pathetic 5.4 at his individual workout. I believe his knee is still bothering him, and he may need another surgery. If he regains the athleticism that made him the Outland trophy winner he could be the best pick in the draft here. |

Suggs falls because of Size and injury concern. But he is a fast and dynamic player who has been very productive in college, and plays much stronger then his weight would indicate. I have been comparing him to Curtis Martin, who also dropped because of injury and size concerns. He is faster then Curtic, but not as quick. So why not have the Pats take him in the third round, just like Curtis. Gil Brandt, "Suggs stood at 5-11½ and weighed 204 pounds. He ran 4.45 and 4.48 in the 40-yard dash. He had a 36½-inch vertical, a 10-foot long jump, and ran the short shuttle in 4.14 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.84 seconds. He did not lift because of a minor shoulder injury." This pick is near impossible to predict. If they take McGahee they will not take Suggs here, obviously. If they trade up in the first or secodn round this pick will probably be gone. |

I am project the patriots to get this pick in the Tebucky trade. A CB would be a nice pick here, and Donald Strickland or DeJuan Groce would not be a reach. Strickland has a little more size, but Grace is a better man-to-man cover corner now, but I'm still recovering from Brock Williams in the 3rd round two years ago! If they are looking for a D-Lineman this could be a good place for Kindal Moorehead, who Belichick interviewed and apparently was impressed. He was a highly touted recruit out of high school, who under-achieved his first 3 years, but may have put it all together last season and he has terrific athleticism at 6'3 and 288 pounds. Gil Brandt, "He is 6-foot-2¾, 283 pounds, ran 4.96 and 4.97, had a 34-inch vertical jump, 9-foot long jump, and benched 23 times." However, Calico was running 4.42 at 222 pounds. Gil Brandt, "Calico was 6-3 7/8 and 222 pounds. He didn't do anything else except his position drills. However, his hand measured 9½ inches and his arms measured 35 inches." This could be the perfect situation for him. He has a lot of learning about the game to do, and he could sit and learn from Brown, Patten, and Branch. Brown will not be around forever, and in 2 or 3 years Calico may be ready to step into the number one Position. |
