| Name: Patricia Dillard Date: October 29, 2001 Lesson Length: 45 minutes School: Red Cross Elementary Age/Grade Level:3 grade # of Students: Subject: Math Topic: Subtraction # of IEP Students: ACTIONS: Prepared prior to observation Objective(s): At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of 3 digit subtraction with regrouping using base 10 blocks. Connections: This lesson fulfills Core Content Statement M-A-E1.1.2 The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Context: The students have mastered addition using base 10 blocks with regrouping and without regrouping. They have also learned subtraction without regrouping. Materials/Technology: 1. A Fair Bear Share by Murphy 2. Base 10 blocks (for each student) 3. Work Sheet (subtraction 3-digit numbers) 4. pencil Procedures: Implements/Manages Instruction: A. Initiation: To introduce this lesson, the teacher will read the book A Fair Bear Share by Murphy. B. Strategy: The teacher will model the correct way to subtract three digit numbers on the overhead using base 10 blocks. Remind the students that they have subtracted three digit numbers without regrouping and they will now subtract with regrouping. Write 658-472 n the board and demonstrate subtraction using the blocks on the overhead. Place 6 flats, 7 longs, and 8 units on the overhead. First subtract the digits in the ones place column (8-2=6). Take away 6 units and write 6 on the board. Next, subtract the umbers in the tens place column (5-7=?). Borrow one from the hundreds place to make the top number larger than the bottom number. When this is done subtract (15-7=8) and place the 8 below the line in the tens place column. Exchange 1 flat for 10 long You now have 5 flats and 15 longs. Since we have 15 longs we can subtract 7 and the answer is 8. Subtract the digits in the hundreds place column (5-4=1) and place the answer below the line in the hundreds place column. Raise your hand if you would ike to come and try to solve a problem. C. Practice: The students will complete a worksheet figuring out the equations to determine which bear ate the cookies. D. Closure: The students will share their equation pictures with a partner. Student Assessment: Each student will complete the worksheet with 80% accuracy. |
