Connections: This lesson fulfills Core Content Statement SS-E-2.2.2 �Objects int he sky (e.g., Sun, clouds, moon) have properties, locations, and real or apparent movements that can be observed and described. Context: This lesson is the introduction to a moon unit. The lesson is designed to get the students interested in thinking about the moon. Materials/Technology: 1. Book - The Moon by Gail Gibbons(or similar books) 2. Moon journals 3. Pencil 4. Chalk/dry erase board 5. Chalk or markers Procedures: Implements/Manages Instruction: A. Initiation: To introduce this lesson, the teacher will ask the students to answer a riddle about Earth�s moon. Give the clues one at a time until you receive the answer �moon.� For example, �This object is part of the solar system. It is smaller than Earth. It usually seen at night. It has holes called craters on its surface. It goes around the Earth. It seems to change shape on different nights. If you look up at night, you will probably see it.� B. Strategy: The teacher will read one or more books such as The Moon by Gail Gibbons. C. Practice: After the story has been read to the class, the students will recall information about the moon and the teacher will list the information on the board. The students will write and draw about the moon in their individual journals. D. Closure: After each student has completed their journal entries, they will share with a group of peers. While in this group each child will participate by discussing their entry. Student Assessment: Each student will list three or more facts about the moon in their journal. |
